Birchill Farm Amenities

Birchill Farm and its cluster of six cottages (sleeping 2-7) has a magical quality for adults and children alike. Its tranquil location, set almost a mile from the nearest public road, allows parents to relax and enjoy seeing their little ones roam freely from the moment they arrive, whilst the brilliant indoor and outdoor play areas, toddler-friendly nature trails and interactive farm rounds have under 10s captivated from the outset.

It is evident that the farm's owners Simon and Margaret have drawn on their experiences of travel with their own brood of five and created a family-friendly haven complete with a fully enclosed, farm themed, outdoor baby and toddler zone. Featuring a farm shop, pony spring rocker, baby swing and an amazing 'Birchill Farm Tractor' play frame - there's plenty of opportunities for creative, imaginative and social play. For under 12's there’s a fantastic double towered castle with a drawbridge, climbing wall and slide. With swings and an ever popular giant trampoline, the play area provides an ideal spot for parents to relax, whilst their children are happily amused.

For wet days there’s an indoor play barn, especially for the under 5's, with a soft play area, a wooden play kitchen, lots of toys, games and activities - not forgetting comfy sofas and a coffee machine for mums and dads. Take a spin on one of the ride on toys or borrow a bedtime story from a library of children's books. In addition all of the cottages have a toy box filled with toys and games for the under 5's and for older children boxes of toys can be borrowed from the play barn. With a whole host of four-legged friends including Dotty the sheep, pygmy goats, ponies, donkeys, pigs, ducks, chickens and alpacas, even the most hard to please tot is easily kept fully entertained without ever leaving the grounds. That said there is plenty to tempt guests away - the many attractions of this slice of North Devon with the Tarka trail on the doorstep, family-friendly venues and lovely stretches of coast within a short drive, to name but a few. A long list of nursery gear is provided (see grey Fast Facts box) so even packing for the stay comes without the usual worries. Plus, with little ones worn out by evening, grown-up guests can enjoy relaxing nights in, especially when taking advantage of the excellent home-made frozen meals available from the Visitor’s Centre. Alternatively, babysitting can often be arranged, allowing parents the opportunity for a rare night out.

Accommodation Overview:
Bramble is a two storey, two bed cottage with plenty of charm. Furnished in contemporary country style with electric wood burning effect stove, the living space is warm and inviting. A widescreen TV and DVD player are great for cosy nights in. There is a dining area with seating for four. The well equipped (oven, hob, toaster, microwave, fridge/freezer, washer/dryer) white, shaker style country kitchen is brought to life with vibrant red and orange tiles. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, the first has a king size bed and the second is a twin with wooden sleigh beds (though full sized, may not suit some adults). A cot will fit into either bedroom. There is a bathroom with a shower over the bath. Outside there is a pretty, enclosed terrace to the front of the cottage.

  • Birchall Farm Cottages is a fantastic place to stay with children. The facilities are excellent and the morning farm feeds are brilliant (for the parents as well as the children). Farmer Simon is wonderful with the children, making sure they're all involved and having fun. A lovely stay!Review dated 17/06/2016

  • We could not have picked a better cottage for our holiday! I wish we had found this property years ago. Our boys (5 and 2.5 years) wanted for nothing. There was plenty to keep them busy - animal feeding, playground, house with two floors of toys and activities, table football, play barn with ride on toys plus buckets and spades, rock pooling nets, crab lines etc etc). The accommodation was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Farmer Simon was fantastic, the boys absolutely loved him. He made the animal feeds even more enjoyable, and was always on hand to recommend the best crabbing spots, beaches, pubs. Thank you for such a memorable family holiday. We will definitely be back!Review dated 13/12/2015

  • Amazing location with very friendly owners. Animal feeding every morning was the highlight of our day. Perfect for little ones. Will definitely book again.Review dated 07/10/2015

  • Fantastic cottage, fully equipped and very comfortable. The play areas for the children are wonderful, the shared gardens mean children make friends with each other so easily and the mornings feeding the farm animals is a truly captivating experience for all the family. I'm tempted to book for next year!Review dated 19/06/2015

  • Birchill farm is quite clearly outstanding in the way simon and margaret the owner managers have come up with a haven for families with young children. Farmer Simon throws himself into helping kids get hands on feeding the animals with great humour and enthusiasm and the play park and other play facilities are excellent, all in a tranquil relaxing setting.Review dated 30/04/2015

  • Fantastic! Had a lovely 5 days so well set up for children they are safe, entertained and that makes relaxed happy parents. Will definitely recommend this property to friend and family.Review dated 23/10/2014

  • We love Birchill Farm Cottages. The cottage completely met expectations, with the hospitality exceeding expectations! The morning animal feeding was the highlight of every child's holiday, and the indoor playbarn and outdoor play area are amazing - far better than the photos on the website. We aren't normally ones for return visits but we will definitely be coming back here!Review dated 19/09/2013

  • Simon was extremely helpful. Not only did he provide a great farm experience for us and the kids. He also posted back items we left behind.Review dated 24/07/2013

  • We really enjoyed our week at Birchill Farm. The accommodation was quite compact but very well equipped but what really made the holiday was the thought that had been put into the children's facilities and the sheer energy that Farmer Simon put into his daily animal feeding rounds with the children (and parents!). Simon had boundless energy and humour, got everyone involved and knew everyone's names which was quite a feat. The morning sessions got all the families talking and we picked up some great tips on where to visit and enjoyed chatting to our neighbours as our daughters got on really well. From bottle feeding lambs to collecting eggs our 4 year old was encouraged to get really hands on while even our 7 month old managed to sprinkle some grain for the chickens and feed the ducks! Has left us with some great memories and even my other half wants to return - he is not one for the repeat experience usually. The farm is well located and scenic and we had a really varied week, with beaches, gardens and theme parks all nearby. Plus the play barn is great for filling an hour here or there and for the children and parents to mingle.Review dated 04/06/2013

  • Wonderful holiday cottage. Children got a real thrill from feeding the animals in the morning. Simon, the farmer, was a truly great host to both children and adults alike.Review dated 08/08/2012

  • Simon and Margaret were perfect hosts. Always happy to assist and advise on any queries. The facilities were excellant and everywhere was extremely clean and tidy.Review dated 24/07/2012

  • We had a wonderful holiday at Birchill Farm, I would strongly recommend these cottages to anyone, it was a very relaxed environment, very well equipped accommodation, fantastic outside play areas and inside soft play barn which was great for the rainy days, the feeding of the animals every morning was fantastic and the children/ toddlers got so much out of it. We can't wait to go again next year!!Review dated 13/07/2012

  • We had a great stay. The outdoor play area had things for all age groups and the play barn was really well equipped for babies through to age 6 with a billiards table downstairs. Simon was fabulous with our children (aged 2 and 5) and they really enjoyed the animal feeding. Accommodation was well decorated and spotlessly clean.Review dated 05/03/2011
