Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily, offering 1,849 kilometres of coastline which is mainly rocky, but also offers many stretches of coastline along with some spectacular headlands, several bays and many inlets. There are also several smaller islands located off the coastline. The island offers a mountainous interior with several smaller rivers running through it as well as a natural, freshwater lake, Lago di Baratz. Located off the tip of the “boot” of Italy, Sicily, the largest island in the Med, is another worthwhile visit for the whole family. Located in the central Mediterranean Sea, one of the most prominent and well-known landmarks is Mount Etna, the tallest active volcano in Europe. Sicily has a unique culture with many fascinating historic sites to visit all over the island. Major cities include Catania, Palermo, Ragusa, Syracuse and the old town of Taormina as well as the seaside resort of Giardini Naxos.
To the northeast of mainland Sicily, visitors can enjoy the Aeolian Islands, situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The islands offer much in the way of child friendly hotels, making for a restful and enjoyable holiday for the whole family.
