BFB's Overview.

For parents of a certain age, ‘Little Houses on the Prairie’ may well bring to mind the iconic Sunday morning TV series, which opens with a happy little girl with pigtails, skipping through a wild flower meadow! Well these seven gorgeous ‘little houses’, surrounded by swaying fields of corn, maize, wheat and barley, certainly capture that spirit of carefree rural life with the bonus of being close to the great beaches, seaside towns and ‘Pink Granite’ coastline of Northern Brittany.
Even the owners’ story is a romantic one, as Liz fell in love with the place and her husband-to-be, over 18 years ago, when she came here from Ireland to work in the farm restaurant, which is still a flourishing family affair today. After finishing college, she hot-footed back to Brittany and married Corentin, beginning a new chapter for the couple and the farm. Liz and Corentin now live here with their four children and, over the last 10 years have been renovating and converting the farm buildings into 7 boutique gites where families can share a slice of their Breton good life.

As Liz and Corentin have renovated the cottages, they have affectionately named each one after their original occupant, so families will be staying in Rose, Louise, Marie, Josephine, Florence, Jeanne or Anne, which all have their own quirky character. The emphasis has been on creating romantic, cosy and highly individual cottages, which the couple have achieved with wow factor results. Original features, natural materials and warm colour schemes are complemented by bold and boutique-style interior design, whilst the furnishing and finishing touches are an eclectic mix of old and new, with wonderful bits and bobs picked up from bric-a-brac markets and car boots. Twinkling lights around a canopy bed; a big wicker rocking chair by a wood burner; a space-age age bathroom pod with pea-green walls – the cottages are straight from the pages of fairy stories which are sure to delight big and little kids alike.

Besides the cottages, the other hub of the farm revolves around the family restaurant and farm shop, just a couple of miles away. The family has been running ‘Le Char a Bancs’ since 1971, serving up their home grown, home reared and homemade produce in simply delicious dishes such as their famous Potee or Pot au feu, Breton crepes and gallettes, all washed down with home pressed apple juice and Corentin’s own Breton cider. Le Char a Bancs is much more than a restaurant too, and children of all ages will be quite happy spending the day here, thanks to the array of swings, slides, castles, pedal boats and pony rides, not forgetting meeting friendly farm animals including pigs, cows, hens and ducks. Besides eating here, families can arrange with Liz for a yummy breakfast basket of goodies to be delivered, which will magically appear each morning in a little glass house in front of the cottage. Because good food is such a feature on this farm, Liz also offers mini cookery classes for little ones in her own home.

Accommodation overview
Les Petites Maisons dans la Prairie consists of 2 x 1-bedroom gites, 4 x 2-bedroom gites and 1 x 3-bedroom gite.

La Maison de Anne (4 + baby) is a funky family cottage, measuring 80m² which really shows off the owners’ flair for combining bold interior design with rustic, cosy-cottage character. The living room has a cosy cabin feeling, with wood panelled walls, a comfy sofa and wood burning stove, plus there is a flatscreen TV, DVD and CD players and free Wi Fi. A basket of toys and books is provided and a library of books and DVD’s can also be found in the farm’s ’cabine’, along with a wealth of local tourist information. The kitchen has striking red brick walls and is equipped with all mod cons including a fridge freezer, dishwasher, gas hob, oven, microwave, filter coffee machine, Nespresso coffee machine and kettle. Two washing machines, a dryer, iron, ironing board and two hair dryers are also in the cabine. The house bathroom comes as a surprise, like a smooth space pod has landed in the cottage, with a pea green interior, huge free standing bath and sleek, modern fittings. Up the spiral staircase, a children’s bedroom is bright and playful with green and white striped ‘play house’ walls, fuzzy soft furnishings and two chunky wood single beds beneath sloping eaves. Also under the pitched timber ceiling, the master bedroom is charming and romantic, with a king size wrought iron bed beneath a glittering, chrysanthemum light fitting. La Maison de Louise opens onto a lawned garden, with garden furniture, deck chairs, sun umbrella and a barbecue, plus families can spill out into the shared garden which has a ‘chateau fort’ play house, sand pit and slide.

Location Information

Les Petites Maisons dans La Prairie is located in a quiet, countryside setting, surrounding by fields of crops and just 10 minutes drive from the gorgeous Northern Brittany coastline.

The owners’ family restaurant, Le Char a Bancs, (3kms) has been an institution among locals since the 1970’s for its home-cooked Breton dishes, including a classic pork and vegetable casserole, sweet and savoury pancakes and Louise’s delicious desserts. It’s open every day except Tuesday in July and August but only a weekend treat out of season. Many of the delicacies and ingredients used in the restaurant are also available to buy in the farm shop, including Corentin’s cider and pressed apple juice, pies, home grown rhubarb jam, local honey and luxury chocolates. Besides the foodie goodies, the shop sells pretty ceramics and the kind of interesting Brocanterie that the owners have used in their gites, whilst the children can have a whale of a time in an adventure playground or on pedal boats or taking a pony ride or meeting friendly farm animals!

In addition to Le Char a Bancs, the owners recommend several other restaurants and creperies within a just a few miles from the gites, including L’Auberge du Goelo (?) just 2kms away which offers an excellent take away service. Market’s take place every day of the week in nearby towns and villages to stock up on local produce, with Chatelaudren on Mondays, being the closest, just 2 minutes away. The market takes place on Thursday in the pretty harbour town of Binic (10 mins), which also has a full range of shops, amenities and bustling restaurants lining the quays.

The owners recommend 11 beaches which are just 10 minutes drive from cottages, each with their own attraction, including vast expanses of soft sand, several with supervised swimming in the summer months and bays with plenty going on. To suggest just three, La Banche Beach, near the heart of Binic, is the largest beach nearby, featuring a sea water swimming pool and paddling pool; Les Godolins has lovely, Belle Epoque charm; and Le Moulin is possibly best of all with babies and toddlers in tow, thanks to the easy access for buggies and a choice of beach bars and restaurants.

Besides the beaches, the Cote d’Armor, Cote d’Emeraud and Cote de Granite Rose has plenty to keep families amused, whether following panoramic coastal paths, exploring historic cities or choosing a variety of family attractions. Saint Brieuc (15 mins drive) features a charming medieval quarter of cobbled squares and timber framed buildings, whilst Paimpol (20 mins drive) has a long maritime heritage and is renowned for its seafood restaurants. Boat trips to the car free Brehat Island promises a pretty and peaceful setting for a picnic or families can hop aboard the Paimpol-Pontrieux steam train or visit the Zooparc at Tregomeur.

Who owns this place?

Liz met Corentin, a farmer, in the mid-1990s when she was a student and worked in his family's restaurant in North-West France to improve her language skills. Born and bred in Ireland, she moved to the farm that her husband had inherited from his grandparents in 1991 and together they have renovated several properties in the hamlet which are rented out as holiday cottages. They now live with their four children (Dara, 12 , Molly, 11 , Una, years and Roisin, 6) in what was originally the farms pigsty, surrounded by tumbledown barns, fields of hay and wild-flower meadows and prairies.
Liz & Corentin love to very peaceful feeling of being in the countryside yet they are close to the village and towns and of course the beautiful rugged coast of Brittany.
While in college, Liz worked part-time in a highly renowned family hotel business where she learnt the importance of hospitality, attention to detail, high quality products and service and the essence of putting guests at the center and of their well-being.
Corentin, for his part, learnt hospitality and service from working in the family Farm-Inn restaurant created by his parents.
