BFB's Overview

To get away from it all or for great get togethers with friends and family, Wheeldon Trees Farm is a really fab find. A cluster of farm buildings and cottages has been given a new lease of life as nine award-winning holiday cottages, centrally situated at the heart of England and surrounded by the spectacular Derbyshire Dales near bustling Bakewell and Buxton.

Just passing through in 2007, owners Deborah and Martin immediately fell in love with the place and decided to run away from the rat race in London, where they had a successful business, to start a new life in the country. The couple wanted to offer what they value themselves - a great environmentally friendly place to stay with a warm, professional welcome. Within months, the work was underway to renovate 7 cottages and create a new one, installing a ground source heat pump and providing extensive recycling facilities (for those post celebration moments!). A new games room / communal dining room were also created which is one of the big plus points when booking the cottages as a group, for up to 30 guests. The Long Room can be set up with a big banquet table or more informally for finger food and there's a well equipped kitchen and loo. When not being used for group celebrations, The Long Room is a superb space for families on damp Derbyshire days, as it's set out with a pool table, table football, board games, puzzles, books, DVD's and maps.

When it comes to the cottages themselves, Deborah and Martin have achieved the simple balance of traditional features and contemporary home from home comfort. Exposed stone walls and timber-framed ceilings give a rustic feel to the cottages and underfloor heating keeps the smooth tiled floors toasty underfoot. Big leather sofas are the place to flop after a day on the fells and the cottages have flat screen TV's, DVD players, IPod docks and complimentary Wi fi. Open plan living, dining, kitchen spaces make keeping an eye on babies and toddlers that bit easier, as does all the baby gear that can be provided. From the Denby China to a dishwasher and coffee machine, self catering is a pleasure plus a luxury breakfast pack of local goodies can be included. Other little luxuries include constant hot water, sparkling tiled bathrooms and ensuites, pocket sprung mattresses and foam toppers for really good nights' sleep. There's a separate laundry room and all the cottages have patios and access to the outdoor areas where children can play and help feed the chickens and lambs in spring. A childrens play area is planned for 2012.

Accommodation overview

Wheeldon Trees Farm has nine family and pet friendly cottages which each sleep up to five people or the cottages can be booked together for groups of up to 30 people. Priestley Cottage has two bedrooms and sleeps three plus a baby. One bedroom can be set up with a King Size bed or two singles, with space for a cot which can be provided. The second bedroom has a single bed. The contemporary bathroom has a bath and over bath shower. Outside is a small patio area with garden furniture.

Location Information

Wheeldon Trees Farm is surrounded by stunning Derbyshire scenery which made Deborah and Martin fall in the love with the place at first sight! It’s ideal for escaping the daily grind, unwinding and re-energising with glorious walks and bike rides from the door. The cottages aren’t completely miles from anywhere either because there are two pubs within walking distance and the spa town of Buxton is only 5 miles. For group gatherings of family and friends, the cottages also have a conveniently central location in the middle of England, smack between the M6 and M1 motorways.

The village of East Sterndale is within strolling distance and a visit to The Quiet Woman pub is well worthwhile – only crisps and pork pies for pub grub but interesting beers and a traditional atmosphere that’s a far cry from soulless gastro pubs and thumping theme bars. A healthy 40 minutes walk up the lane at the back of the cottages, following part of the High Peak Trail, leads to The Royal Oak at Hurdlow where food is available but it’s worth booking in advance.

Renowned for its spa water, Buxton is a thriving market town packed with shops, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, plus a supermarket. You can even swim in the ‘therapeutically blue’ mineral water at Buxton Spa Swimming Pool, on the edge of the town’s pretty Pavillion Gardens. Also close by (12 miles) is the bustling little ‘capital of the Peak’, Bakewell, most famous for its sinfully sweet and sticky puddings which bear no resemblance to the pre-packed iced imposters with a cherry on top!

Around half an hours drive from Wheeldon Trees Farm, Matlock Bath is an extraordinary little riverside town that’s well worth a visit. Essentially the town runs alongside the Derwent in a steep rugged gorge but there’s a distinctly seaside feel about the whole place, helped by numerous fish and chop shops!

The Derbyshire Dales and Peak District National Park is a mecca for every kind of outdoor pursuit. Besides scary mountain bike trails and soaring peaks to hike or climb, the region is cross crossed with well maintained railway line trails which are perfect for leisurely family cycling and pushchair walks.

For other things to see and do, guests staying at Wheeldon Trees Farm can enjoy discounts and offers at local attractions with a Peak District Privilege Card. Attractions include Peak and Monsal Trail Cycle Hire, the Medieval Manor of Haddon Hall, the Heights of Abraham hill top park, reached by panoramic cable cars above Matlock Bath, Poole’s Cavern and the chocolate making experience at Cocodance in Castleton.

  • We enjoyed a fantastic few days with 'Farmer Deborah' and Martin at their picturesque farm where they've thought of everything a family with young children could possibly need or want. The children loved helping to feed the animals daily and we all loved the Peaks. We will definitely be back!Review dated 28/10/2016
