Nestled amid Devon’s picturesque Blackdown Hills, yet just 20-minutes from the M5, Stonehayes Farm is a scenically set cluster of cottages that are ideal for making a quick escape to the country. Plus, with the Jurassic coast its quintessential seaside towns less than half an hour’s drive away, days on the beach will definitely be on the cards as well!
The Grade-II listed farm is a former thatched Devon long house with barns and outbuildings which owners Les and Lesley have transformed into contemporary, 4-star holiday cottages. Each of the five cottages has its own individual charm and combines character features such as exposed original stone walls and beamed ceilings with contemporary indulgences such as log burning stoves, cosy leather sofas, flat screen TVs, DVD players and granite-topped kitchens equipped with all modern amenities.
Besides the lovely cottages themselves, Stonehayes Farm is set in 17-acres of garden and grounds which lead to the small River Luv. Children we love the 14ft trampoline and climbing frame with swing and slides. To keep everyone occupied rain or shine, the cottages also share a large games room, complete with table football, table tennis, pool table and darts. Each of the cottages have their own grassy area with outdoor dining furniture and barbecue, so it’s well worth paying a visit to the region’s farm shops or the coast to feast on home reared meats, fantastic fresh fish and Somerset cider.
Shippen sleeps 5+cots in 2 bedrooms comprising a double with 5ft bed and ensuite shower room, and a triple with three singles, two of which can be attached to become a 6ft double. One of the lounge sofas is also a double sofa bed. The family bathroom has bath tub with shower whilst the kitchen is equipped with washer dryer, dishwasher, oven, hob, fridge, freezer, wine cooler and microwave. Outside, there is a private garden with lovely views, a BBQ and dining furniture.See all cottages at Stonehayes Farm here
Stonehayes Farm is set on the edge of the Blackdown Hills in Devon, just 2 miles from the market town of Honiton which has a good variety of shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and take-aways, plus a street market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Honiton Pottery Shop and Milkshake Bar is well worth a visit, where little messy monsters can ‘throw’ and paint pots, make hand and foot print plaques, tuck into knickerbockerglories and choose an exotic smoothie.
Nearby Bartletts Farm Shop near Honiton has a butchery for home reared meats, a deli, bakery, fruit and veg making it an ideal spot for picking up a long list of local goodies!
Besides exploring the surrounding rolling countryside, country lanes and thatched cottage villages, Stonehayes Farm is less than half an hour’s drive from lovely seaside towns and beaches including, Beer (8 miles), Sidmouth (10 miles) Lyme Regis (14 miles ) and Branscombe (13 miles). Families can go fossil hunting along the rocky shores around Lyme Regis, meet furry long-eared friends at Sidmouth’s Donkey Sanctuary and go train crazy at Beer’s Pecorama. In fact, families staying at Stonehayes Farm are spoilt for choice with the variety of things to see and do within easy reach and whatever the weather, in Devon, Dorset and Somerset.

Tucked away in the glorious countryside of East Devon, Stonehayes Farm is everything that a rural retreat should be; it’s lovely and peaceful, but not so far from civilisation that you have to drive miles to get anywhere. Honiton is only a couple of miles away, with supermarkets, a mix of big name and independent shops, a bustling weekly market, and some very good places to eat.
The holiday cottages at Stonehayes Farm exude rustic charm, retaining many centuries old features; you’ll notice quirky windows where the original openings in the barns were, bumpy old walls, ceiling beams and wall timbers, and yet nothing is lacking and it all blends seamlessly with the more modern and practical features – solid oak floors and beech doors, the soft neutral décor, and all the convenient things you want when you’re on holiday, like comfy beds and en suite bathrooms.
All of our country cottages have an electric oven and hob, a dishwasher, microwave, fridge with ice box or a fridge freezer, cafetieres, Freeview TVs, DVD players, and rural wifi. We do our best to make things easier for you when you come to stay at Stonehayes Farm, so we supply all the bed linen and towels*, tea towels, dishcloths – even down to a welcome pack of milk, teabags, coffee and sugar so you don’t need to worry about picking anything up en route. If you have babies or toddlers just let us know and we can provide a cot, highchair and stairgate; our smaller holiday cottages have wood-burners so we supply logs for these from October to April.
Outside, each property has its own area of garden** with outdoor furniture and a barbecue for use from April to October. All cottages have use of the shared grounds so there’s heaps of room for children to run around and play, for a game of rounders or football, and there’s a play area with a climbing frame, swings and a slide, a trampoline, a play house and football goals. What’s really nice is to stroll down the fields and along the River Luv on a summers evening; then you can come back to Stonehayes and watch the sunset before you turn in for the night.
There’s also a shared games room for all guests; it has a pool table, table tennis, table football, board games, and toys for younger children. This tends to be a popular place for the Dads to hang out as well as the kids! Another useful shared facility is the freezer room in one of the outbuildings; if you go to a farm shop nearby and come back with some locally reared meat or freshly caught fish but don’t want to eat it straightaway, you can pop it in the freezer for another day.
We’ve also made sure there’s plenty of parking, and what’s good is that the managers live close by so they’re on hand if you need any help during your stay. The only thing we ask is that there’s no noise after 11pm – you’ll notice how this fresh air makes you sleepy so round these parts folk tend to turn in at a reasonable hour.
*Note that you will need to bring your own beach towels and towels for dogs.

This is the perfect getaway for anyone, not just those with children. The welcome we received from Les and Lesley was wonderful and their welcome pack was delicious! We had a freshly baked loaf from Lesley most days and even had their own award winning sausages. There is nothing to fault here as they have thought of everything! Our two young children loved feeding the animals and collecting the eggs and didn't want to leave. We will be returning soon to this gem of a place.
Fantastic property, great for kids and adults.
A real home from home. The accommodation was first class with wonderful touches. .. fresh flowers, eggs and bread on arrival! The kids play area was fantastic and within easy viewing of the cottage. Our 3 year old loved feeding the animals every afternoon and collecting all the eggs. The location was great with most attractions within a 1 hour drive. We would highly recommend to any family and will certainly be back. ...with friends!
Really enjoyed our stay here. Les & Lesley were very welcoming and our toddlers absolutely loved the play area and visiting the animals - so much so that they didn't want to leave at the end of the week! Would definitely recommend. Would be ideal for a group of friends / family in adjoining cottages, especially those with young children.
Best self catering accommodation we've ever stayed in. Great attention to detail, everything very well thought out
Beautifully clean and luxurious interior of property and lovely surroundings and playground for the kids. Lots of extra touches like homemade bread and eggs on arrival and toys in the property and all essential baby gear etc so less to pack. The owners are lovely and the children loved meeting the pigs and chickens especially.
Our 7 year old son described it as "the best holiday cottage in the world" and we liked it just as much! Loved getting involved with feeding the farm animals and the children's play area was fab. Lesley and Les made us feel very welcome.
Our stay at the cottage was brilliant. I would recommend it to families with children of any ages. The cottages are to a high standard and equipment needed for a toddler was provided. The games room and outdoor play equipment was beyond our estimations. My little boy absolutely loved feeding the animals and it made our holiday extra special!
