BFB's Overview.

*Listed in The Times Newspaper's 50-Best Villas in the Med in 2017*
Hmmm, now what does BFB love most about Villa Virago? Is it the poolside futons and four poster bed or having a private beach on the doorstep? Or maybe it’s the funky children’s den under the stairs with bean bags, Xbox and TV? Or perhaps it’s just the whole Zen vibe of the place, from the clean lines and zero clutter to bunches of dried eucalyptus in the showers for that sensory spa-style start to the day? Add to this a safe setting for little ones and a long list of quality baby accessories and Villa Virago is one pretty amazing spot for a family holiday to Sardinia.

The owner had been in love with Pula for several years before finding his dream house in his dream location to do up and although the 1970’s villa needed a whole lot of TLC, this was definitely the one. And boy did he roll up his sleeves and get stuck in to do it up in style – replacing the floors in polished concrete, revamping the bathrooms and kitchen and installing the pool, with the help of volunteers from the Workaway scheme.
The whole renovation has been done with real designer flair, cleverly setting ornate furnishings and flashes of colour against a white blank canvas and blending natural materials with ornate antiques. In fact, 90% of the furnishings and finishing touches were tracked down in flea-markets to be creatively refurbished and upcycled, including bedside lamps made from wagon axles, decoupage covered chairs and spice racks made from test tubes. From the minimalist, open plan living area to the colour co-ordinated bedrooms, the overall effect is a really funky and unique family villa.

The luxurious serenity of Villa Virago flows outside into the 800 square metre garden and pool area, which is completely enclosed and gated, with lawned areas for children to play and plenty of shady spots beneath the trees, including figs oranges, lemons, almond, olive and date palm. The owner has also taken special care to remove any poisonous plants and cacti in case of inquisitive little nibblers.

The 8m x 4m pool is set in a wraparound timber deck, with an olive tree growing through, surrounded by fragrant jasmine and citrus trees. It also has a Pool Eye alarm and a solar heated shower. A meditative Budha inspires a sense of calm and its impossible not to relax on the poolside beanbags and four poster bed, or curling up with the Kindle on a vintage sofa in a luxurious outdoor lounge. Jasmine and white bougainvillea clamber over an alfresco dining gazebo that seats 14 and a barbecue/food preparation area is nearby with large double grills and a sink. Just 100 metres away, Villa Virago shares a small sand and shingle beach with just 14 other houses and the bigger, sandy Perd'e Sali public beach is just a few metres further along, which has a safe shallow shore for little ones to paddle. Bliss!

Accommodation overview

Villa Virago is a really sleek and spacious contemporary villa with 5 bedrooms (3 doubles and 2 twin rooms), plus a day bed that can be an extra single, to sleep up 11 people. Three travel cots are available for babies and there is ample space in 3 of the bedrooms but a bit of a squeeze in the other two.

The large, minimalist living area is open-plan, with sofa seating and a decorative feature fireplace, doors to the front garden and outdoor lounge terrace and an ultra modern dining kitchen. Children will also make themselves at home in a funky ‘TV Nook’ tucked under the stairs, with 4 bean bag chairs, a TV, DVD player and library of DVD’s, plus an Xbox and a selection of non-violent games. The kitchen has the designer factor, with poured concrete countertops, gleaming white units and a marble top island table on wheels which can be a dining table for 6. The kitchen is also well equipped with mod cons, including a fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, electric fan oven, gas hob, kettle and blender, plus vintage crockery and glassware and all the practicals for baby and toddler feeding time. Everyone can eat together at an extendable dining table that seats 12-14 or out in the garden, in the jasmine covered gazebo, with a table seating 14 and the barbecue nearby.

The two twin bedrooms at Villa Virago are on the ground floor and share a gleaming modern shower room. One bedroom has double doors to the back garden and the other has double doors to a private covered terrace, framed by climbing jasmine. An impressive granite staircase spirals to the first floor where there is a second living area, with the day bed that doubles as an extra single and doors onto a large balcony. A cyber-white hallway leads to the three colour-co-ordinated double bedrooms - the blue master bedroom, orange double bedroom and green double bedroom. The master bedroom opens onto the first floor balcony and has an ensuite with twin natural stone washbasins and a large walk-in shower. There is a second luxury bathroom on the first floor, known as the ‘gold and white’ bathroom, which also has twin wash basins and a walk-in shower.

Villa Virago stands in 800 square metres of enclosed garden, comprising the 8m x 4m swimming pool and sun deck, mature trees and a lawn for children to play, shady covered terraces and a dining gazebo. There is a separate laundry room in the garden with a washing machine and an additional full-sized fridge/freezer.

Location Information

The location, as much as the architecture of Villa Virago, wowed the owner at first sight and it’s the perfect drop and flop location for a holiday to Sardinia, being an easy half hour drive from Cagliari airport. The white sandy bays, coves and dune-backed beaches around the nearby town of Pula (5 kms) are also renowned as being some of the most beautiful on the island so it’s not surprising this stretch of coastline is called the Gulf of Angels!

A private sand and shingle beach is just 100 metres from the Villa which is exclusive to just 14 houses and the sandy public beach of Perd'e Sali is only a little further, with a shoreline of clear shallow water that’s perfect for little ones to paddle and play. The local Marina is 750 metres from the villa which has a café bar, ice cream parlour, restaurant/pizzeria, kayak hire shop, boat hire and a dive centre.

The buzzing town of Pula has a charming old centre with interesting shops to browse in its narrow streets and Tuesday is market day for stocking up on local produce such as sweet Sardinian honey. There is also plenty of trattorias and restaurants for easy pasta suppers and seafood specialities.

Besides its beaches, Pula’s other big claim to fame is the ancient archaeological remains of Nora, including the Roman baths, mosaic floors and the only known Roman theatre on Sardinia. The Nora Lagoon is a lovely spot for birdwatching and there’s a special care centre for sea turtles with a panoramic café terrace. For a smashing day of ‘splashing’ fun, the BluFan Waterpark is only 4.5kms from Villa Virago with wave pools, whirlpools, waterslides and more for all ages.
Sardinia’s attractive capital city, Cagliari, is only half an hour’s drive, crowned with the rocky centrepiece of Il Castello and full of beautiful piazzas, chic shops and interesting things to see, with plenty of pavement cafes and gelatarias to take time out with little ones in tow.

Nearest medical services: GP / A&E: Pula, 5kms.
Getting here: The nearest airport is Cagliari, only 37 kms from Villa Virago, with regular flights from airports across the UK.
