BFB's Overview

After many wonderful holidays in Puglia, the Timms had fallen as much in love with Cisternino as each other, so they poured their heart and soul into Trullo Sereno and got married in the local church. Six years on, all their hard work has been justly rewarded, with Trullo Sereno being voted one of The Times’ Top 50 Villas in Mediterranean and getting the big thumbs up from BFB.

From the minute the couple set eyes on the place, they knew this was the setting they’d been searching for, with wonderful views over a wooded valley to white-washed Cisternino, glittering in the sun. A local friend introduced them to a brilliant local architect and artisan builder and together they created the 3-bedroom trullo of their dreams.

In the traditional art of trullo building, every stone was hand chipped to fit together perfectly beneath the pointy bee-hive rooftop, so peculiar to Puglia. The interior is also characterised by round, hobbit-hole archways between each room but the finish is the opposite of rustic and the epitome of cool, white, minimalist luxury. It’s also been equipped with families in mind, from a long list essential baby gear to the Smart TV with Sky Movies and Disney Channel, to an Xbox 360, Lego, board games and more to keep to little ones entertained.
Way down in the heel of Italy, however, holidays here are all about relaxing, eating and having family time in the sun, so the outdoor space, garden and pool at Trullo Sereno is bliss. A huge, smooth stone patio runs around the trullo, with a dining table in the shade of a pergola and an outdoor food prep station with a built in BBQ, pizza oven and sink. Gated steps from the patio lead to the 12x4m pool where weary parents can sink into luxurious loungers while children splash on the Roman steps, have fun with the inflatables or play on the poolside lawn with giant Jenga, giant Twister and other garden games. For snacks and drinks by the pool, there is bench seating around a table in the shade of a pergola. Elsewhere in the garden children will find a play set with a swing, slide and climbing rope plus bats, balls and football goals for anyone who has the energy!

Accommodation overview

Trullo Sereno is a spacious modern villa with three bedrooms for a family of 6-8, plus two travel cots are available for babies. The master bedroom is ensuite, with a king size bed; bedroom 2 has a double bed; and bedroom 3 has a double bed and a day bed that can be an additional double or single. All the beds are made up with cool Egyptian cotton linen and have flat-screen TV’s.. As well as the ensuite, the trullo has a separate family bathroom.
The living room, kitchen and dining room at Trullo Sereno are all linked by round archways and all have cool, whitewashed walls and smooth stone tiled floors with underfloor heating for chillier months. In the living area families have two large sofas to flop in to watch the HD Smart TV with Sky Channels, choose a family DVD, play on the Xbox 360 or good old board games. The trullo also has Wi Fi, a Sonos sound system, CD’s and books. An archway leads through to the gleaming Italian designer kitchen, with funky stools at a breakfast bar and high spec appliances including a Gaggia coffee machine, juicer and blender, large fridge freezer, microwave, gas hob, dishwasher, washer/dryer and all the essential crockery and utensils. Another archway leads into the dining room with a large, antique style table that seats 8 and handcrafted pottery from the local town of Grottaglie. The wall art is based on the owner’s love of music and there’s even a Yamaha guitar for guests to strum away evenings under the stars.
Surrounding the trullo is a large stone patio, with a dining table in a pergola and a stone food prep area with a BBQ, pizza oven and sink. A gate leads to the swimming pool which has Roman steps and is 1.5m all the way across. Luxurious loungers and umbrellas are set out by the pool and there is seating round a table in a poolside pergola. Alongside the pool there is also a lawn where children can play garden games in the shade.

Location Information

Puglia remains an amazingly unspoilt and traditional corner of Southern Italy but more and more families are now discovering the delights of its fab food, timeless towns, pretty coast and distinctive ‘trulli’.
Known as ‘the market garden of Italy’, an abundance of fruit and vegetables thrive throughout the countryside and around 40% of the country’s olive oil comes from Puglia. Naturally, this means families can look forward to some pretty delicious local dishes, even if it’s the simplest tomato ragu with Pugliese, ‘little ears’ Orchiette pasta. The coast is never far from anyway in Puglia and only 20 minutes from Trullo Sereno, so fresh caught fish and seafood is usually high on the menu too.

A local shop and pizzeria is just 5 minutes’ drive from Trullo Sereno and there are plenty of shops, café bars and restaurants in the picturesque town of Cisternino (10 mins). This traditional town is why the owners really fell in love with this part of Puglia, with its pretty old quarter of quaint shady streets and a central piazza that really comes alive throughout the summer months. For meat lovers, the ‘Fornellos’ are a mouth-watering must, sizzling up speciality dishes straight from their butcher’s counter. The owners also reckon the pizzas at Doppio Zero are the best ever, with soft doughy bases, left to prove for 48 hours, , but it gets very busy in the summer so worth booking ahead.

The largest town in the area is Martina Franca, with lots of designer shops to browse and pleasant to stroll around in the evening, doing the Italian ‘passeggiata’ thing. Just 15 minutes from Trullo Sereno, Ostuni is known as The White City, with another picturesque old town full of lively café bars throughout the summer, several Michelin rated restaurants and many shops in the newer part of town.
No stay in Puglia is complete without visiting extraordinary Alberobello (30 mins), which is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the 1500+ trulli that make up the town, many of which are now artisan shops, galleries and twee trattorias. On the way back, perhaps stop off in Locorotondo for a late afternoon drink or gelati away from the sightseeing masses.

The coast is strung with pretty coves and fishing villages for families to discover and the two nearest sandy beaches to Trullo Sereno are just 15-20 minutes’ drive, at Pilone and Torre Cane. The owners also recommend a day at Polignano a Mare (45 mins), which is a gorgeous old town with a very pretty cove, although it’s a pebble beach not sand. For a fun family day out, Zoosafari at Fasano (30 mins) has theme park rides as well as a drive through safari, lots of animals to see and dolphin shows. Also 30 minutes’ away, families can book horse riding treks to the beach and through the countryside at the Parco di Mare horse riding Club (30 mins).

Nearest medical services: Cisternino, 10 mins.
Getting here: The nearest airports to Trullo Sereno is Brindisi, 35 minutes by car, and Bari airport is 50 minutes. There are direct flights from the UK with Ryanair, Easyjet and BA.
