BFB's Overview

This two-bedroom single-storey cottage is a treat for young families being one of just two newly converted barns on the pretty Treal Farm estate just twenty minutes walk from the beach and family-friendly pub at Kennack Sands on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula. Owner, Kevin clearly had little ones and their parents front of mind when completing renovations offering comfortable country cottage interiors, and indoor and outdoor play areas.

Both cottages are built in traditional, craggy Cornish stone with beamed ceilings, wood floors and either a wood burning stove (Hayloft) or real fire(Bull Pen) for cosy nights watching a favourite DVD or the Digital TV. The kitchens have a good sized fridge freezer and dishwasher, both cottages have baths and showers plus the bedrooms are warm and welcoming, with one in each set up as a nursery room with two cot beds, which can be set up as cots or small singles, ideal for little ones.

Both cottages come with a full toy box and the owners have also created a cheerful play barn with soft play bricks, ball pool, toys, puzzles, baby zone and even free wi fi. The farm has an enclosed outdoor play area too, with climbing frame, swings, slide and ride on tractors so there’s no chance of children getting bored whatever the weather. Both cottages have their own patio with seating, BBQ and patio heater, plus they share a Jacuzzi hot tub where frazzled parents can snuggle into the bubbles to soothe away the stresses and feel like a person again – not just a parent!

Accommodation Overview

Bull Pen is a single storey cottage with a large stone porch leading through to an open plan living/kitchen/dining room and living area with beamed ceiling and open fire. The master double bedroom has a French door that leads out to a patio area, with seating, BBQ and patio heater. The second bedroom is a twin room. The house bathroom has a bath with shower, hand basin and WC. Hayloft and Bull Pen share a separate laundry room with a washing machine and tumble drier, an iron, ironing board and clothes airer.

Location Information

Treal Farm enjoys the best of both worlds with a tranquil rural setting, but conveniently only a mile from the small village of Ruan Minor, a mile from the lovely beach at Kennack Sands and a mile from the fishing village of Cadgwith and family-friendly Cadgwith Cove Inn. For more shops and supermarkets, Helston (10 miles) is the main town on the Lizard Peninsula.

Ruan Minor has a green grocers and well stocked village shop which includes an off licence and sells home-made ready meals using local produce from ‘Caroline’s Kitchen. Kennack Sands is one of many beaches strung around the Lizard Peninsula and ideal for families thanks to sheltered clear waters, rock pools, toilet facilities, cafe, beach shop and the Kennack Sands Inn. Cadgwith is as picturesque as Cornish fishing villages come and the setting for the BBC’s Fisherman’s Apprentice. The village has a crab shop to stock up on Cornwall’s most luxurious and delicious delicacy, plus a pub, restaurant and local arts gallery. Harry Deacon Delicious Homemade Meals is also based here, who supplied the BBC film crew and offers superb dishes delivered to the door.

The village of Lizard itself, 3 miles from Treal Farm, is the most southerly point of mainland UK which makes it a bustling little spot throughout the summer with cafes and gift shops, fish and chip shop, pub and Ann’s Famous Pasty Shop. There are lots a dramatic coastal walks to secluded coves so it’s worth packing a picnic for children to have fun playing pirates and digging for buried booty.

Right on the doorstep at Treal Farm, children can pay daily visits to the horses at Poltesco Valley Riding Stables and perhaps enjoy their first pony ride. There are also a whole host of places to visit and things to do within just a few miles from Treal Farm and the cottages include a comprehensive information pack. To reel off just a few: Try the Jersey ice cream, yoghurts and fudge down on Roskilly’s Farm, discovery the variety of attractions at Flambards Theme Park in Helston and meet the seals, otters, penguins, crabs and starfish at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary.

Nearest Medical Services (GP & A&E) : Nearest GP at Ruan Minor (1 mile). Nearest Minor Injuries Unit at Helston (10 miles). Nearest A&E at West Cornwall Hospital, Penzance (20 miles).

  • Fantastic accomodation, exceeded our expectations. Our son loved the freedom of the space. Perfectly equipped. Location is rural but quiet and perfect for a baby friendly break. A great safe beach is not far away. Would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks Treal FarmReview dated 01/09/2017

  • Bull Pen was one of the best cottages we have stayed in for a very long time and that is without even taking into account all the fantastic things on offer to help look after and entertain our little ones! Thank you so much. We can't wait to come back again in the summer!Review dated 14/11/2015

  • Great location, very quiet with an easy walk to Kennack Sands and other local beaches. There is plenty for toddlers and adults to do. The cottage is wonderfully spacious and very comfortable and the hot tub is the icing on the cake, don't forget the baby swim nappies. We would most certainly go back.Review dated 28/04/2015

  • We had an excellent holiday at the Treal Farm Bull Pen - it really does have everything you could possibly need for a short break with little children, and is in a lovely, secluded location. We will certainly be passing on this little gem to all our friends.Review dated 27/09/2014

  • Beautiful property in quiet location. A real bolt hole and plenty to keep children very happy. Our children did not want to go out sometimes due to the high quality playroom and outside playground.Review dated 31/08/2013

  • Wow what an amazing place The Bull Pen at Treal Farm is. It is so well equipped for babies and toddlers from baby cutlery to buggy's, bath toys to door bouncers! we needed only to pack clothes and a couple of 'special' toys for our 22 month old and 9 month old. The indoor and outdoor play areas are fantastic to have on site should you wish to have a lazy day. The outdoor hot tub is an added bonus which our babies loved as much as we did! The pot of tea and cupcakes on arrival was a nice touch. We enjoyed ourselves so much we will definitely be returning. Thank you Kevin and Suzy!Review dated 12/04/2013
