BFB's Overview

Once is never enough for those who discover the 5-star Thief Hole Cottages in North Yorkshire and guests can’t wait to come back for more. Owners Jessica and Phillip are overflowing with Yorkshire hospitality to make guests feel more like friends, from having the bubbly on ice to hanging balloons for special occasions. They especially go the extra mile for families, providing a helpful baby and child welcome pack, as well as a generous hamper of goodies, and all the baby kit and caboodle that parents really need – high chairs, travel cots, steriliser, monitor, bed guards, potty, crockery etc. Little ones will be just as delighted as the grown-ups with their holiday home from home, either delving into the collection of toys or having fun in the outdoor play area, with a swing and slide set, see-saw and play house.

Thief Hole Cottages are a top class conversion of period barns, which have been furnished and finished to boutique hotel standards. Each one is a masterclass in achieving a stylish balance of period character and contemporary comfort, from beamed ceilings, feature fireplaces, wood burning stoves and four poster beds to big leather sofas, flat screen TV’s, iPod docks, free Wi Fi and gleaming, designer kitchens. The owners also make guests feel special and spoilt with all those boutiquey extras, from Champagne, chocolates and fresh flowers, to fluffy robes and towels, cosy slippers and spa toiletries.

For families to spill outside, eat outdoors and enjoy the fab views, the cottages have large gravel and flagstone terraces to the front and rear, with picnic benches, tables and barbecues. The cottages are also surrounded by fields and there is plenty of grassy space for children to charge around, as well as the toddler friendly play area.

Accommodation overview
Thief Hole Cottages comprises Thief Hole Barn (8+1), Swift Nick Cottage (4+2), Fawkes Cottage (2+2) and Turpin Cottage (2+1). Six travel cots are available for babies and all the cottages have space for at least one cot in their bedrooms. The cottages can be booked exclusively for family get-togethers and celebrations of up to 16 adults, plus children and babies.

Swift Nick Cottage (sleeps 4+2 children and babies in cots) is all on the ground floor, with a sloped ramp for easy access with a pram. The beamed living, dining and kitchen area is open plan, with French doors flooding the cottage with light and opening to the outside terrace, overlooking the fields beyond. Families have an L-shaped leather sofa and armchairs to cosy up in front of the wood burner and watch one of the DVD’s provided or just scroll through the Freeview and Sky Channels on the flatscreen TV. Parents can chill out to CD’s or some tunes through an iPod dock while little ones play with the toys on the deep-pile rugs. A modern take on a farmhouse kitchen features a central wood dining table, solid wood units and all the latest appliances, including eye-level oven and microwave, fridge-freezer, electric hob, Nespresso, dishwasher and washer/dryer. The master bedroom has a king size four poster bed and ensuite with a bath and overhead shower. The second, family bedroom has a double bed and two single beds and there is a separate family bathroom with a bath and a large walk-in shower. Both bedrooms have their own flat screen TV and DVD player.

Location Information

Thief Hole Cottages are located in a quiet, countryside setting in North Yorkshire, on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks but also easy to get to from the A1(M). The market towns of Northallerton and Thirsk are just 5 miles away, which have all the shops, restaurants, take-aways and amenities families could need, including a choice of supermarkets which will deliver to the cottages. Besides the supermarkets, a nearby organic farm shop will also deliver local produce and groceries to the cottages.

A welcoming pub, the Black Swan, is within walking distance of Thief Hole, serving fantastic food and many more pubs in the towns and villages nearby boast award winning chefs and gastro menus. For Real Ale fans, both Theakstons and The Black Sheep breweries in Masham offer tours with tastings and a shop to stock up at the end (yes, two breweries in one tiny town after the Theakston brothers had a fall out!)

For the ultimate afternoon tea, Northallerton is home to one of the famous Betty’s Tea Rooms in an elegant, Grade II Georgian building. An array of indulgent cakes and delicious dishes are immaculately served in the glass-domed Palm Room or families with fidgety little ones can simply pop into the shop to take a taste of Bettys back home. For something less fussy, the White Horse Fish and Chip Restaurant in Northallerton is always a winner.

The real James Herriot hailed from Thirsk and wrote his classic, ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ based on his life as a country vet in this corner of Yorkshire which is now known as ‘James Herriot Country’ and the town has a museum that reveals all about the man, his books and the TV series. In keeping with the country life, Thirsk also has a thriving racecourse with a calendar of meets from April to September for a bit of fun and a flutter the Races.

A must for families is a visit to Lightwater Valley Amusement Park near Ripon which has rides for all ages, including the Ladybird roller coaster, Flying Camels and a Rapids ride for toddlers, an indoor Angry Birds soft play zone and hair-raising white knuckle rides for older children. Further down the A1(M), on the way to historic York, Flamingo Land is another major family highlight, combining full-on theme park with a big zoo, where kids can have all kinds of animal encounters and be a zoo-keeper for the day.

There are countless other places to visit and things to do within an hour of the cottages including meeting the Meercats and birds of Prey at Thorpe Perrow Arboretum near Bedale, taking a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway, clambering round Brimham Rocks or the ruins of Fountains Abbey and spending the day at magnificent Castle Howard. Of course, both the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks are stunningly beautiful natural playgrounds to simply pack a picnic and get walking or cycling, from family friendly trails by babbling rivers to more challenging adventures up and over craggy peaks.

Nearest Medical Services (GP & A&E): Northallerton Hospital 5 miles.
