BFB's Overview

Surrounded by peaceful Suffolk countryside, The Suffolk Escape is steeped in three generations of farming tradition but when Andrew came home to take the helm in 2007, he also kick-started its evolution into a luxurious rural retreat. Besides studying tourism and then travelling the world, he spent several years organising ‘money can’t buy’ incentive travel packages which certainly shows in the ultra-swish Sheepyard Barn, with its own indoor pool and hot tub under the stars. Andrew’s wife, Sarah, is a local vet and looks after the livestock on the farm but as a mum of two, she’s also made sure the Sheepyard Barn ticks all the boxes for families with tots to teenagers in tow.

A mile away from the road, the Sheepyard Barn provides a wonderful sense of space, with open views over the surrounding fields where children can safely play and bounce off any excess energy on a sunken trampoline. And there’s no better place to enjoy the openness than in the outdoor lounge, set just down a path from the house to be completely surrounded by the views. Almost as panoramic is the big decked patio, complete with BBQ and wood fired pizza oven, or even dining indoors thanks to the wall of sliding glass doors that flood the huge, open-plan living space with light.

In keeping with the cubist conversion, the interior is completely contemporary, with clean lines, fresh white décor throughout and just a few hints of its rustic origins in the timber beams and red brick feature walls. Although it may be minimalist, there’s been no comprise on comfort or the high spec finish, from the huge semi-circle sofa in the lounge to the sleek white kitchen and breakfast bar, like a set for Masterchef. Of course, the house has all the latest in home entertainment to delight digital natives of all ages – including a home cinema system, Blu-Ray player, iPod dock and a PlayStation 4. The games console is actually set up in the adjacent ‘Shearing Shed’ games room, just a few metres from the main house, which also has a table football and giant bean bags for watching movies on the 50” LED TV. Thanks to a clever, one-touch stowaway king-size bed, this also doubles as an extra bedroom (that a teenager may never want to leave!).

The icing on the cake at the Sheepyard Barn has to be the private indoor pool, just 1.1 in depth and with noodle floats for kids, but also featuring an endless pool Fastlane counter current machine for serious swimmers to swim against the current. Or then again, the best bit might be relaxing in the massaging, bubbly bliss of the hot tub, proven to release happy endorphins and help weary parents get a great night’s sleep. As an added bonus, spa treatments, yoga, pilates, a private chef, swimming lessons and wood fired pizza oven making can all be arranged at the barn.

Accommodation overview

The Sheepyard Barn is a wow factor holiday home for up to 12 family and friends, plus a baby in a cot. There is plenty of space for everyone in the huge open plan living space, whether snuggling into the semi-circle sofa to watch a movie, or enjoying a celebration feast at the designer dining table or sipping coffee at the breakfast bar. The front wall is virtually fully glazed and two sets of sliding doors open onto the big decked patio with luxury garden furniture, a BBQ and wood fired pizza oven. Immediately opposite, down a flagstone path, a timber gazebo is also furnished with sofas as an outdoor lounge to enjoy the views. The Sheepyard Barn has 3 double bedrooms, which all have ensuite WC’s and two of them have ensuite walk in showers. The master bedroom also boasts a huge feature bath. A twin bedroom also has an ensuite walk-in shower and WC, plus a bunk room has 4 super funky built in cabin beds that are big enough for grown-ups but also cool sleep dens for kids. The family bathroom has a bath, walk-in shower and WC. Just a few metres from the Sheepyard Barn, the ‘Shearing Shed’ is a games room, with a TV, PlayStation, table football and bean bags, but this also doubles as an additional bedroom, thanks to a king-size bed, cleverly hidden in a cupboard that gently folds down at the push of a button.

Location Information

The Sheepyard Barn stands at the end of a mile-long lane, within the 300 acres of Northlands Farm in the heart of rural Suffolk. On the crest of a slight hill, the views and skyscapes from sunrise to sunset are a real treat, stretching over fields and the rolling Suffolk landscape as far as the eye can see. Besides being a luxury rural retreat, Northlands is still a working farm, with vivid yellow fields of Rapeseed, other crops and livestock which children can see on a farm safari.

In the village of Hintlesham, just over a mile away, families can eat out at The George pub, take Afternoon Tea at the Golf Club or enjoy fine dining at the splendid, Elizabethan Hintlesham Hall, established as a restaurant by one of the first TV chefs, Robert Carrier. The village even has its own bijou fashion, home and lifestyle shopping outlet at Hintlesham Barns, with a coffee shop selling homemade cakes. The nearest supermarket, other shops and cafes are in the market town of Hadleigh (4 miles) and Suffolk’s county town of Ipswich is 7 miles away.

The gentle countryside and quiet country lanes are great for exploring the local villages on bikes and there are plenty within a few miles, with timber framed thatched cottages and traditional country pubs. Just to the south, the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the landscape that inspired Constable and Gainsborough to paint their quintessentially English masterpieces, like The Haywain. For the kids, TV’s ‘Jimmy’s Farm’ near Ipswich offers animal encounters and play areas as well as the food shops, and similarly the Suffolk Food Hall has a brilliant bouncy pillow and other children’s activities.

For a change of scene, Suffolk has 45 miles of coastline, with pretty coastal towns like Aldeburgh and Southwold (45 mins) to enjoy fish and chips by the sea and collect smooth pebbles on the scrunchy shore. The nearest sandy beach is at Felixstowe (30 mins), with all the traditional seaside fun of the pier and prom, backed by pretty seafront gardens.

Nearest medical services: Hadleigh Health Centre, 5 mins away. A&E in Ipswich, 25mins away.

Who owns this place?

Your hosts at The Suffolk Escape are Andrew and Sarah Bryce, a family that has been farming on Northlands Farm for over sixty years in the tranquil village of Hintlesham, near Ipswich in Suffolk.

After finishing school Andrew travelled the world and developed a passion for the tourism industry. He went on to study Tourism at university then worked for 10 years in an events and motivation business running global conferences and events. Andrew also spent several years designing and hosting luxury “money can’t buy” incentive travel programmes for corporate groups all around the world.

He returned to the family farm in 2007, reinstating a wide range of livestock and converting a listed barn into a new family home. Using his knowledge of tourism and his vast experience of creating bespoke events he then started The Suffolk Escape with his wife Sarah. After the successful set up and running of four adult only lakeside log cabins, Andrew turned his attention to the sheep's barn on the farm. Within a year, he and dedicated team had transformed the falling down barn into the stunning Sheepyard Barn that you see today.

Andrew and Sarah have two young children, two dogs and two guinea pigs!
