BFB's Overview

South Devon Cottages may have an enviable haul of awards and a host of national newspapers singing its praises but what most impresses us about this cluster of 5-star cottages is that they are so baby and child friendly too.

This beautifully set 10-acre country estate housing a cluster of architect-designed luxury cottages for families of up to six people. It is just a few minutes walk from the bustling market-town of Kingsbridge on the Salcombe estuary, with a host of beautiful beaches within a short drive and a glorious heated indoor pool onsite for relaxed days ‘at home’.

Each cottage is equipped with helpful baby and toddler essentials including travel cot, high chair, stairgate and a selection of toys and games, plus the owners offer a genius ‘First 24 Hours Hamper’ tailored to children’s preferences or allergies. An even long list of other baby and toddler gear can also be arranged according to requirments, along with babysitting by a CRB checked and OFSTED registered child minder.

Mini guests and their parents love the fact that, almost from arrival onwards, little ones can be safely let loose to burn off energy and make new friends in the enclosed, close-cropped playfield, with a climbing frame, swings, slide, Wendy house and play den. Kids can also race each other on John Deere pedal tractors and small bikes or play football, cricket, tennis and basketball with the sports sets provided. Whatever the weather, parents and children will also be making a beeline for the 10x5 metre indoor pool, heated to a cosy 29.5 degrees and open 8.30 in the morning until 8 at night, with pool toys and towels provided, a poolside shower, changing rooms and underfloor heating.

Elsewhere in the ‘swallows and amazons’ grounds, families can discover a secret garden with a shallow stream, follow nature trails to a fenced wildlife lake, have a barbecue and find secluded spots for a picnic or to sneak a quiet read. A footpath along green lanes leads to the village and the local pub is just a 5-minute walk, serving take away fish and chips.

Each of the cottages is the height of contemporary sophistication and luxury, with a nod to New England and Scandinavian simplicity, earning their place in Country Home and Interiors. Character features include vaulted, beamed ceilings and wood burning stoves, complimented by top quality furnishings, handmade kitchens, luxury bathrooms and all mod cons for unwinding in style. A delicious homemade meal can be ordered and in the fridge to make that first night dinner hassle free and parents can be pampered during their stay by booking an onsite massage.
