BFB's Overview

The Isle of Wight is a microcosm of all the right ingredients for happy family holidays and Seasalt Cottage makes a brilliant base for banking priceless childhood memories. The Cottage has a best-of-all-worlds location, just set back from the shops, cafes and restaurants of Victorian Ventnor, in a quiet gated mews and only 5 minutes’ walk from the sheltered sandy shingle beach. Once the bags are unloaded in the courtyard, it’s perfectly possible to have a car free holiday, with all the essentials on the doorstep, but there are so many things to see and do on this beautifully bijou island that all ages will enjoy a little exploring too.

Besides being a modern property, Seasalt Cottage was completely refurbished for the 2017 season so it’s bang up to date in its style and décor. Cool white and muted colours give the cottage a calm and relaxing vibe where frazzled parents can unwind and bespoke furnishings add comfort and character, from an original driftwood coffee table to a luxurious sofa to sink into. Little ones have a basket of toys, board games and books to delve into, as well as family DVD’s and a Smart TV with Sky for all their favourite films and programmes on demand, and fast broadband for playing on iPads. The open plan living/dining room opens onto a private courtyard with a BBQ and the white-tiled kitchen is well equipped for family self-catering. To ensure a good night’s rest at Seasalt Cottage, the two bedrooms combine relaxing, Scandinavian simplicity with the luxury of 400 thread Egyptian cotton linen and cosy wool throws. A rain shower in the family bathroom will have everyone ready and raring for days of family fun and the Victorian style bath is bliss for a long, soothing soak.

Accommodation overview:

Seasalt Cottage is a modern semi-detached mews house, with 2 bedrooms to sleep a family of 4, plus a travel cot for a baby. The cottage has been newly refurbished for 2017, making it especially bright and fresh, with boutique styling, luxurious furnishings and bespoke finishing touches. The living room, with its golden wood floor and muted décor, is really relaxing and comfortable, with a super cosy sofa and armchair for snuggling down to watch the Smart TV or DVD’s, a beautiful driftwood coffee table for playing board games and a designer-style dining table that seats four (plus a high chair is available). The living/dining room also opens onto a private courtyard where families can stoke up the BBQ. The new tiled kitchen is well equipped for family self-catering, including Dualit appliances, an electric oven and hob, a microwave and dishwasher, plus there is a breakfast bar with two funky stools overlooking the mews courtyard. From a hallway, with a handy downstairs loo, stairs lead up the two bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor. The master bedroom has a king size bed, a window seat to read a book in the sun and the second bedroom has twin single beds. Both have luxurious 400 thread Egyptian cotton linen and space for the travel cot provided. The gleaming tiled bathroom has a Victorian style bath with a rain shower above, a washbasin and WC. On arrival at Seasalt cottage, families can pull into the mews courtyard to unpack the car and then a long stay car park is only 2 minutes’ walk, with 4, 7 and 10 day permits available.

Location Information

The short hop across the Solent to the Isle of Wight takes around half an hour by ferry or hovercraft and then all the delights of this jewel of the south coast are within easy reach. The island is only 25 miles across by 13 miles wide, so even families with tots and toddlers in tow can have fab days out to all the best beaches, pretty seaside towns and amazing attractions.

Seasalt Cottage has a quiet mews location in the Victorian seaside resort of Ventnor on the south coast of the island. All the shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants are just a few minutes’ walk, including the cosy ‘Cantina’ named by The Guardian as one of the top 10 places for a brilliant brunch, and the best crab and lobsters on the island at Ventnor Haven Fishery. The town’s sand and shingle beach, is also only 5 minutes’ walk from Seasalt, sheltered by cliffs which make it a few degrees warmer and safer for swimming in the sea. Strolling along the prom, families can blow a few quid in amusement arcades and stop off at the children’s paddling pool, then wander into the award-winning Ventnor Park and sub-tropical Botanical Gardens.

Just 15 minutes’ drive from Seasalt, the wacky wonderland of Blackgang Chine is a definite must for children, with its animatronic dinosaurs, nursery rhyme land and cowboy town among its highlights, plus a visit here gives free entry to its sister Adventure Park, Robyn Hill. Little monkeys won’t want to miss a visit to Monkey Haven and children can get up close with a host of other animals at Seaview Wildlife Encounters, including penguins, meerkats, alpacas and wallabies.

The Isle of Wight is famous as the favourite retreat of Queen Victoria and there is a full day of things to do at her palatial holiday home, Osborne House, from seeing the state rooms and private apartment to peeking into the Swiss play cottage, having an ice cream on her private beach and exploring the playgrounds and trails in the landscaped grounds.

Over half of the Isle of Wight has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the best way to enjoy the scenery is on foot, horseback or by bike. A staggering 500 miles of cycle tracks and bridleways cross-cross the island and it’s even been named as one of
the best places for cycling in the world by Lonely Planet.

Nearest medical services: Medical centre 5 minutes’ walk; A&E in Newport, 30 minutes’ drive.

Who owns this place?

Hi there, we are Vicki & Karl Knights, the owners of Seasalt Cottage. We live in Surrey with our 2 boys and our little dog Betsy. We purchased Seasalt Cottage in 2016 after falling in love with Ventnor and the island. We lovingly refurbished the cottage and started renting it out to our lovely guests for the 2017 season.

What do they love about it?

We love the location of Seasalt Cottage as it really does have the best of both worlds. It's right in the heart of Ventnor, literally just off the high street, so all of the fantastic restaurants and lovely shops are just a hop, skip and jump away. It's also just a 5 minute walk from the beach and esplanade. The great thing about the mews courtyard is the fact it's so central yet really quiet and secluded.

The cottage is a gorgeous space to escape to at the end of a day on the beach or exploring the island. We've decorated it in a muted Scandinavian coastal style which feels calming and relaxing. It has all of the mod cons you need on holiday such as fast wifi, a smart TV, DAB radio and speakers, rain shower and a charming courtyard which is a nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the evening.

Also we love the beds with their luxury egyptian cotton linen, perfect to fall into at the end of a fun day!

What do the kids love about it?

Our boys love staying in Seasalt Cottage! They love the twin room with the comfy beds and colourful wall art. They love the fact that it's a short walk to the beach and to a playground with beautiful views over the sea. We provide bucket and spades and nets for rock pooling which they love.

For babies we provide a travel cot, highchair, bathmat, stairgate and also have kids crockery & cutlery. The cottage is situated in a secure quiet mews courtyard with an enclosed private courtyard with artificial lawn, making is perfect for babies, children and toddlers.
