BFB's Overview

The Dairy is most recently converted of three cottages at ever-popular Partridge Lodge. Friendly owners Aaran and Sarah Henry converted this 17th century barn with the same care and attention they give to their guests and this, along with their location just inland from a lovely part of the Suffolk coast with a good food pub within a short walk, is the reason that they consistently receive outstanding feedback from BFB clients. This property is particularly well suited to two families holidaying together thanks to the design with bedrooms split over two different zones within the house.

Guests enter via the Dairy's enclosed deck which overlooks a pretty lake (safely fenced). To the right of the reception hall is a cosy TV snug room. Through the reception is the open plan kitchen. There is a main bathroom and also a separate toilet as you walk from the kitchen through to the stunning vaulted barn, which forms the main living space. As you enter this beautiful large living space there is a dining table to sit 14+, an handy worktop area for serving food and drinks at meal times, two 3-seater sofas and chairs plus a large flat-screen TV with satellite channels, DVD player and Playstation (on request), a wood burner gives it a cosy feel. Nearby there is a seperate shower room and play area with a good selection of kids books, games, DVDs and a basket of toys. Upstairs in this main section of the barn there is a kingsize bedroom and a twin bedroom. Downstairs back past the kitchen there is a large character filled ensuite double bedroom with its own gated terrace onto the garden, whilst above that is upstairs is a good-size twin bedroom. All the rooms have plenty of room for a cot or toddler bed and stairs are gated on request. The garden is a wonderful size its fenced with swings and a slide, paddling pool and table tennis/football. With the bedrooms split two in each 'wing' of the house, this has a great set up for two families holidaying together, allowing everyone privacy but also acres of communal space.

A BBQ can be provided on request for the cottage's private deck which enjoys lovely views of its fairly idyllic settting overlooking the lake (safely fenced), which comes complete with a rowing boat* and fishing rights. Guests can also enjoy the communal areas which include an all-weather court used for tennis in the summer but is also fun to play football and basketball on all year round.

Experinces with their own brood of four young boys, have clearly rubbed off on the Henrys who've gone to great lengths to ensure their guests enjoy a proper break. They provide a good list of baby and toddler gear so packing, loading and unloading is minimal, plus a range of handy pre-bookable services from babysitting and private chef, to pre-arrival shopping (including formula, baby food, nappies etc.) and visiting beauty/massage therapist. They live in an adjacent barn and are more than happy to offer first-hand advice on child-friendly places to see, eat and drink locally, and escort mini guests on chicken feeding, egg collecting rounds as well as introducing them to their petting rabbits Sugar and Spice.

Who owns this place?

Partridge Lodge : A Rural Retreat ...

In 2007 my wife and i decided to move away from city life. We bundled up our four kids and the furniture in search of a sense of reality, that we had both enjoyed in our own childhoods.
We found and bought an old run down dairy farm and set about renovating it into a rural retreat for guests to come and unwind closeby to our magestic historical coast in Suffolk.
Our boys helped right the way through our project with innovative ideas and kids spaces. The feedback from our guests is always uplifting and gives us a real sense of purpose.
We have been rewarded enormously by being voted third best in Europe by BabyFriendlyBoltholes awarwds. We were also picked out by Rachael Oakden for an editorial piece written about Partridge Lodge in Aprils 2010 FOOD and TRAVEL magazine.

The Henry's minus Dad

What do they love about it?

Our Holiday lets are secluded enough to feel freedom and the grounds relaxed enough to have a wonder and take in all the wild life including owls, woodpeckers, kingfishers and deer that inhabit our surroundings. Or for a longer walk there's the footpaths that guide you to the beautiful Boulge Estate (where lies in a quiet secluded churchyard, Mr Edward Fitzgerald, translator of the Omar Kiyan) or in the opposite direction to Bredfield Village with its community run shop and local pub.
From Bawdsey Quay to Sutton Hoo to Orford to Aldeburgh to Southwold to Thorpeness to Friday Street Farm Shop to The FarmCafe to the Charm of Woodbridge itself, there is so much life and these are only some of our favourite places.

What do the kids love about it?

We have our own chickens (with great tasting real eggs for breakfast), sugar and spice our petting rabbits (which kids adore spending time with), to our sand covered all purpose court (for football, basketball, badminton), to our boat house and fishing pond (where a monster three pound eel was caught last year but the pike illuded capture).

  • A brilliant weekend had by our whole family. Great venue, great location and a super welcome - the chickens even laid an egg! The icing on the cake was a private chef who prepared and served a fabulous 3 course birthday meal (additional service recommended by the owners). We hope to return soon.Review dated 29/09/2014

  • We had a wonderful time with our 5yr old and 2 1/2 yr old. They loved the garden (slide, swings, table tennis, paddling pool) plus the larger gardens with tennis court, chicken coup, sand pit, tree houses...endless fun! Great location to explore the local area (Orford, Bawdsey, Rendlesham Woods, Ardleburgh), and Sarah makes a wonderful, welcoming host.Review dated 11/08/2013

  • The accommodation was absolutely wonderful, the children loved the garden and open areas and loved collecting the eggs in the morning. We will definitely be back.Review dated 28/08/2012

  • Amazing host, amazing accommodation, amazing location!! Loads to do, had a great time. Our host Sarah was brilliant, we felt like we were family!! See you again soon.Review dated 21/08/2012

  • Outstanding on almost every count. Only drawback was that the only bathroom was a long way away and down the stairs from both the master bedroom and kids room. I was just a bit worried about the kids needing the loo in the night and taking a tumble but not sure anything can be done on that! (there is a stair gate)Review dated 03/09/2011

  • A great place for a family break including grandparents as a very spacious property with 2 TVs (useful during Wimbledon) a good variety of toys and equipment for little ones, plenty of space for early morning walks and tennis and table tennis for the adultsReview dated 07/07/2011

  • Lovely cottage with one double bedroom and one single. Very welcoming owners, and work has been done to add a new lounge and decking area / patio to the property, meaning its quite a bit bigger than when the photographs were taken. Very nice walks can be taken starting from the cottage itself, one in particular through the nearby Boulge Estate was particularly picturesque and peaceful and the surrounding areas ( Aldeburgh, Orford, Bawdsey, Ramsholt ) are charming and not at all crowded, at least when we went in early July.Review dated 10/07/2010
