BFB's Overview

Not only is this stunning 6-bedroom house an absolute beauty for extended families and friends but Montflori is in a brilliant spot for discovering the very best of Northern France. The house, swimming pool and garden are so fab that just hanging out here is holiday heaven but there’s also beautiful Normandy countryside on the doorstep, the coves and beaches of Brittany to peer in rockpools and all those fairy-tale castles and vineyards of the Loire just to the south.

Owners of Montflori, Nicky and Paul, have lovingly restored and styled the house to gorgeous boutique hotel standards, making the most of exposed beams, arching timber framework and polished wood floors. They’ve then pulled off a relaxed, rustic elegance with handpicked furnishings and simple, tasteful décor. As parents, they’ve made sure the house has all the mod cons and comforts that families need for a stress-free stay too, such as a cosy snug which kids can make their own, a selection of toys and games, fast wi fi and no less than 6 TV’s, with 2 DVD players, UK Freeview channels and Netflix.

For playing, relaxing and eating outdoors, Montflori has got the lot too, standing in an acre of grounds with a private pool, lawn and play area, kitchen garden and dining terraces with wood fires and barbecue. The 10 x 5 metre pool is safely fenced and lockable, with steps for easy access, a ledge around the inside and a variety of floats including 2 shark fins. The pool is heated from June to September and if the overnight temperature is above 10 degrees in October too. It has a retractable cover for taking a dip even if the sun isn’t shining. Children can bounce off some energy on a 7ft netted trampoline or play on the swings, then a shady little tree lined avenue makes the perfect place to spread out a picnic. At the front of the house, one of the barns has been made into a games room with table football, a pool table, giant connect four and chalk boards, plus this leads through to a dining area with a wood fired oven and a terrace which has a firepit for toasting marshmallows under the stars.

Accommodation overview

Montflori is a beautifully renovated Normandy farmhouse which makes a spacious and luxurious home from home for up to 15 people plus 3 babies in cots. The house has two sitting rooms, as well as a large dining kitchen, so grown-ups and children have space to do their own thing, a cosy snug, plus 3 of the 6 bedrooms are ensuite (with an additional shower room from Spring 2017).

Grown-ups can relax in an elegant living room, with polished parquet floor, wood burner and Freeview TV, while children play games or watch Netflix and DVD’s in a separate lounge.Or escape to the snug for peace and quiet. Everyone can come together for French breakfasts in the big farmhouse kitchen that’s been finished and equipped to the highest standards, from the tiled floor and walls, chunky wood units and wood burning stove to modern appliances and all the pots, pans and utensils for group self-catering. One of the barns adjacent to the house has been made into a separate utility room with 2 washing machines, a tumble dryer and a chest freezer.

The master bedroom at Montflori makes a fabulous suite for parents with one or two little ones, comprising an extra large Emperor-size bed, a 3ft 6 sleigh bed and space for a cot, plus a sitting room area and a luxury ensuite with a roll top bath, shower and WC. The house also has a family bedroom which has a large double bed, two single beds and an ensuite with a roll top bath and shower attachment, washbasin and WC. Three of the remaining bedrooms have king size beds and the sixth has a double bed. Four of the bedrooms in total have space for a cot and the owners provide 1 wooden cot and 2 travel cots. Besides the ensuites there is a family bathroom, a downstairs shower room and 2 WC’s downstairs so no chance of queues for the loo! (plus a new shower room from May 2017!)

The house stands in an acre of private, enclosed garden featuring dining terraces, a small orchard, lawn and a play area with a trampoline and swings. A private, 10x5 metre heated swimming pool with a retractable cover is also safely fenced and lockable. One of the barns at the front of the house has been converted into a games room with table football, a pool table, giant Connect 4 and chalkboards, plus a wood fired oven with dining table and large dining terrace to the front.

Location Information

For a road trip or fly drive holiday to Northern France, Montflori has a great location on the border of Normandy and the Pays de la Loire, with the Brittany coast just over an hour away. The house is right on the edge of the Parc Naturel Regional de Normandie-Maine with far reaching views over gentle countryside.

The local shop for basic provisions is in the little village of Cousemes Vauce (1.5kms) and St Fraimbault (2kms) has a bakery to pick up fresh baguettes and pastries for breakfast, as well as a small convenience shop, a tabac and a restaurant. In August, St Fraimbault bursts into bloom with its annual flower festival and the village also has a great park and two lakes with pedal boats for hire and a waterside café to watch the world go by with coffee and crepes.

France is famous for its markets for stocking up on local goodies and these take place in the nearby towns of Ambrieres les Vallees, Mayenne and Gorron. The owners suggest that Mayenne is perhaps the best of all and there are also lots of other interesting shops, cafes and restaurants in the cobbled streets. Whether eating at home or eating out, foodies are in for a real treat staying at Montflori, with Normandy and Brittany renowned for its cheeses, crepes and fabulous seafood, ciders, apple juice and Calvados brandy.

The Normandy and Brittany coasts are within easy striking distance for a day by the sea, whether rock-pooling and crabbing in sheltered coves, playing and paddling on vast sandy shores, exploring quaint harbour towns or delving into the history of the D-Day landings. The closest beaches include Carolles and Avranches on the Normandy coast, approximately 1 hour’s drive, but one of the favourites with the owners’ children is St Briac sur Mer on the Brittany coast, 1.15 mins drive.

No visit to Montflori would be complete without a trip to the magical, tiny tidal island of Mont St Michel (1 hr), being one of the most popular UNESCO World Heritage Sites in France. Just crossing the causeway over the sea is fun for children and the narrow cobbled streets that wind up to the magnificent abbey are lined with gift shops and cafes. For more frivolous family fun, Parc Ange Michel (35 mins) is a nice little theme park with rides for all ages as well as a waterpark, mini golf, trampolines and adventure playgrounds.

Nearest medical services: English speaking GP’s are in the town of Garron, 10 mins drive, and the nearest A&E is in Mayenne, 20 mins drive.

Getting there
For a self-drive holiday to Montflori, the nearest cross-Channel ferry ports are St Malo (1.5hrs) and Caen (2hrs), with Calais and Eurotunnel 4.5 hours’ drive. For a fly-drive holiday, the nearest airports are Rennes (50 miles), Caen (57 miles) and Dinard (61 miles)

Who owns this place?

My husband and I had searched for months to find the right property in France. We wanted to find somewhere that we could pop to for a long weekend or spend months with friends and family coming to stay.
When we found the house it had been inherited and was somewhat neglected. We are so grateful that we were able to restore this beautiful Maison Bourgouise back to its former glory incorporating some modern touches.
In the years that followed our family have grown and the house is now fully restored. Our children have had their best holidays at Montflori and friends often suggested that we should share our little gem. So last year for the first time we received our first paying guests.
The response has been fabulous and it has been lovely to read the comments left behind by our super guests. Everyone says the house exceeds their expectations. It's hard to capture the tranquillity and chilled atmosphere the house has. The house and gardens offer the space to be all together or alone there's something for everyone here.

Overall everyone feels that Montflori is the perfect place to relax and enjoy being together with friends and family. Our Instagram page montflori has upto date pictures and our facebook also shares local events.

What do they love about it?

Our children, their cousins and friends all love Montflori for different reasons. As a parent, I think the main observation is how much freedom they have to roam. They can explore and enjoy nature and the simple things.
It's a family favourite to sit out around the fire-pit, getting cosy of an evening whilst star gazing, toasting marshmallows and just enjoying being together. Every time of year is special here, from the springtime when all the new flowers are emerging, the nights around the firepit to lovely hot summers followed by the arrival of autumn when the walnuts are harvested, nights in front of the wood burner with a glass of lovely wine.

Swimming all day in the pool, bouncing competitions on the trampoline to picking the vegetables and seeing new fruit growing, simple things that we so often don't have the time to relax and enjoy. For walkers or runners, there's some lovely country walks to be had and the killer hill to test even the most ardent fitness fanatics. The small holding just a short walk from the house has goats, sheep, donkeys and pigs for the kids to feed.

As the children have grown our holidays are now punctuated with horse riding, go-karting and visits the great parks that we are so lucky to have nearby.

What do the kids love about it?

Children love Montflori because there is so much freedom and fun to be had. With its gardens wrapping around the main house, this is the ultimate private secure location. Tucked away in a corner of a small hamlet you can feel utterly relaxed. The kids love making pizza with their friends in the spacious kitchen, there's room for everyone to get involved. Whilst the adults tend to the cooking of the pizza the kids like to play pool or show off their dance moves, music good food and happy times.
The pool is positioned to make the most of the long sunny days so the kids can swim from early until late, building up an appetite and sleepy heads.

  • Absolutely beautiful house and garden. Loads of space for the children to run around and play. Really well-equipped and a very thoughtful and generous welcome pack. The house feels luxurious but is still homely. The pool was the focal point for our holiday and was warm enough for even the littlest guest. We used it daily, as the cover meant that even the cooler, rainy days could be pool-days. The surrounding area has plenty to offer.Review dated 02/09/2017
