BFB's Overview

The traditional whitewashed stone walls and pointy rooftops of this ancient Puglian Trulli hides a funky interior with mid-century modern accents and all mod cons, perfect for a style-savvy family or two.

The 4/5-bedroom villa is one of a cluster of three 200-year old farm buildings transformed into funky villas with pools and owned by friendly owners, Sharon and Henrik. Grown ups and mini guests will be enchanted by the cool, cave-like interior of conical vaulted ceilings and honey-stone walls, floors and archways, whilst the clean lines and absence of clutter is incredibly calming and conducive to chilling out. But it’s not just the interiors that gets the BFB thumbs up but also the parent-friendly touches including tonnes of indoor and outdoor toys, games and nursery kit. The contemporary kitchen is well-equipped for family self catering and there is a TV, iPod dock and amazingly good wi fi, both inside and out, to satisfy digital natives. The friendly housekeeper, Imma, will always be happy to help with whatever families need, from pre-arrival shopping to home-cooked ready meals and brilliant pizza making lessons for children can also be arranged.

Families will be just as wowed by a beautiful pool with stunning views of the hills beyond, shady pergolas for eating outdoors and a Mediterranean garden where children can play amongst fig, olive and walnut trees. The 15x5m pool is safely fenced and has wide steps, ideal for toddler sitting and splashing. A paddling pool, arm bands and pool toys are also provided, as well as a play house and trikes to keep mini guests happily occupied while parents relax in the sun. Older siblings and grown ups will enjoy the equipment for table tennis, volley ball and football, plus wide selection of books and board games.

Whilst it can be tempting to simply relax and enjoy the villa's lovely grounds, help yourself vegetable garden, fruit and nut trees or while away evenings sipping the excellent but cheap local wine, and enjoying home-made pizzas or more sophisticated meals by the housekeeper on request, it would be a crime not to venture to the very beautiful local towns of Cisternino, Maria Franco or Ostuni and sample some of the excellent trattorias or trendy bars recommended by the villa owners. Beach clubs within a short drive are also suggested.

Accommodation overview
The villa comprises three king-sized bedrooms and one twin sleeping 8 guests and up to two babies. An addition attic bedroom has a double and can be added at a supplement for £250 a week (see extras section in BFB booking form). There are three shower rooms and a baby bath provided on request. The open plan living area has a cosy lounge corner with sofas, which is perfect for little ones to take breaks from the sun and watch TV, DVD’s or listen to music through an iPod. A log burner in the dining area keeps it cosy all year round. The contemporary kitchen, in stone and wood, is fully fitted with modern appliances, including a gas hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave and coffee machine, plus there are all the accessories families could need, from a food processor and hand blender to a bottle heater, bottle steriliser, plastic crockery and cutlery. A separate utility room with sink and washing machine is situated outside the house. The dining area has a modern glass table and six designer chairs, plus one high chair is provided and another can be attached to a chair. The villa has three bedrooms, comprising one with a king-size bed, one with a queen size bed and one with a single bed that has a pull out bed underneath to make a twin room if required. The master bedroom has an ensuite shower room and there is a separate bathroom, both finished in contemporary porcelain, stone and wood. Both the double bedrooms have space for a cot, as well as the third bedroom if set up as a single, and two travel cots are available. Doors from all the rooms at the villa open to an inner courtyard and a stone dining table in a pergola overlooks the surrounding hills and Valle d'Itria. A stone path winds down to the fenced, 15m x 5m pool and there is a poolside gazebo with a stone dining table. A field surrounding the pool has been landscaped with Mediterranean plants and children can play in the shade of fig, olive and walnut trees.

Location Information

This villa was originally a traditional Pugliese ‘masseria’, meaning farm, which is surrounded by fields in the middle of the Valle d’Itria and boasting stunning views from the garden of the surrounding hills towards Cisternino and Locorotondo. A small supermarket is just a short drive away and the beautifully unspoilt old town of Cisternino is only 1.5 miles away with a traditional central piazza lined with restaurants, bars and gelateria. Puglia is renowned for its delicious regional dishes and Cisternino is especially noted for its ‘barbecuing butchers’ who will cook their local meat specialities while families sample a carafe of the fine local wine. The Pugliese orecchiette pasta, meaning little ears, is sure to go down well with children, as well as the indulgent Italian ice cream and sweet desserts.

Besides Cisternino, Locorotondo is one of several historic towns in the Valle d’Itria, known as the ‘balcony of the valle d’Itria’ and one of the prettiest walled hilltop towns in Puglia. Alberobello is perhaps the most famous, being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the ultimate ‘trulli town’, like something from a fairytale, which children will love. The old streets are pedestrianised and a pleasure to stroll around, with many of the trulli now converted into trattorias, galleries and artisan gift shops. Martina Franca is the largest historic town in the valley and the chalky white walls of hilltop Ostuni makes a dramatic sight from far and wide, known as Le Citta Blanca.

Besides the scenic and historic treasures in this the Valley, the sea is never very far away in Puglia and Contrada Fantese is also only 25 minutes from a sandy beach at Torre Canne. Slightly further north, Monopoli is another lovely old town by the sea, with a sandy bay and many restaurants to enjoy fabulous fresh caught fish and seafood. To the south, Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve is protected marine reserve and a paradise for nature lovers, combining unspoilt woods with miles of sandy beach and a good chance of spotting flamingos.

Nearest medical services: Cisternino, 1.5 miles.

Getting here: Brindisi (45 mins) is the closest airport to the villa, with Ryanair and Easyjet flights from the UK. Flights are also available from the UK to Bari (1 hour 15 mins).

Who owns this place?

I went on holiday to Cisternino in 2004 and within 3 days had bought a house in Contrada Fantese. We have renovated the properties extensively but always with our own family in mind. Comfort, convenience and fun. Our children have grown up thinking of Fantese as a second home and we hope everyone who stays in Fantese falls in love with it as we did. My husband who is Danish, is an NHS dentist and I run a very small charity sending dental volunteers to treat orphans in Burma. We live in SW London.

Family on holiday

What do they love about it?

Peaceful, beautiful, birds, butterflies, cats, dogs, goats....... Friendly neighbours, wonderful produce, excellent meals and local, very cheap wine. Lazy afternoons, long lunches, children playing in the field, sun shimmering off the local stone floor and the soporific thought of a siesta before a sensational dinner - preferably cooked by someone else!

What do the kids love about it?

Freedom to roam, climb a tree, play with the balls, football goals, pool toys, no need to ask for permission to run around the field, making up games and then throwing themselves into the pool (no chlorine, cleaned by salt) to cool down.

  • It was a very enjoyable holiday. Pro: pizza oven, small but well appointed kitchen, nice gated pool, lovely outdoor dining area Con: configuration of the house is a little difficult with two families sharing We would definitely stay again.Review dated 26/09/2018

  • We had a great holiday at Contrada Fantese. The Trulli was lovely and worked brilliantly with the kids aged from 3 to 5. They loved the big pool, making pizzas and using the pizza oven. The outside space was perfect for two large families with a huge outdoor table and lots of kid friendly toys to entertain the little ones. We enjoyed exploring the local area and we had some great food. The only small downside was that to access some rooms you needed to go through some of the bedrooms but you kind of expect this with an old property and it was not a major issue. We had a really fun and very enjoyable holiday.Review dated 05/10/2017

  • Excellent property with everything a family could possibly need. We could have travelled with one less bag if we had realised!Review dated 28/09/2017

  • We had a wonderful holiday here. The photos don't do it justice, particularly the pool which was fabulous. The equipment and facilities in the villa made it really easy for us with 3 young children (they are already asking when they can go back!). Sharon and Imma had thought of everything. A great new area for us to explore - great food, wine and ice cream, lovely beaches and very friendly locals.Review dated 25/09/2017
