BFB's Overview

Since Peter Mayle’s ‘Year in Provence’ shot this gorgeous part of southern France into the spotlight, (over 25 years ago!!), it’s a relief to discover there are still gems like Mas des Vignes to escape the tourist traps and live that dream. Surrounded by Cote du Rhone vineyards, the 6-bedroom farmhouse offers complete peace and seclusion for up to 12 family and friends to have the most relaxing holiday - lazing by the pool, playing on the lawn and grazing on French goodies on the veranda.

The farmhouse dates back to the 18th century and the owners have been careful to keep its rustic charm and character, from the stone vaulted ceilings and feature fireplaces with wood burning stoves, to period French furnishings and hand-picked ‘brocanterie’. Their renovation has also brought the ‘mas’ up to boutique standards of luxury and struck just the right balance of old meets new for the farmhouse to have been featured in several interior design magazines.

Feasting on fantastic Provencal produce is all part of the pleasure on a French holiday like this, so the bright, modern kitchen is especially well equipped for rustling up a rich ratatouille or simply serving up olive tapenades with crusty ‘pain rustique’. A chef also lives next door who can take care of the cooking by arrangement and prepare something special for celebration occasions.

While it’s great to be nicely off the beaten track, digital natives will be relieved to know the house isn’t off the grid, with Wi Fi and Sky TV to keep children entertained, as well as lots of toys and games. The greatest pleasure of all at Mas des Vignes, however, is simply kicking back in the totally private, enclosed garden, with views over the vineyard, manicured lawns for children to play and a 10-metre pool with steps into the shallow end.

Accommodation overview

Originally a rambling Provencal farmhouse, Mas des Vignes has been renovated into a spacious 6 bedroom villa and finished to the highest standards of ‘rustic-chic’ and laid back luxury. Sleeping up to 12 plus a baby in a cot, the house is ideal for extended families and friends to holiday together or celebrate a special occasion, especially with a chef living just 20 metres away who can help with the cooking.
The large living room is straight from the pages of interior design magazines, with its white-washed floorboards and chalky walls, elegant arm chairs and comfy sofa for watching the Sky TV, or a DVD, or tapping into the Wi Fi. A vaulted dining room has an antique farmhouse table that seats 12, (plus a high chair is available) and an archway leads through to the well-equipped fitted kitchen, with a range oven and gas hob, a microwave, blender, dishwasher and all the essential cooking utensils. The house has 6 bedrooms, four of which have space for a cot. The master bedrooms has a super king size bed, a stone fireplace with a wood burner and French doors onto a sunny terrace (?); two bedrooms have a double bed; and two bedrooms have 2 single beds. The house has two luxury bathrooms, with a bath, shower, fluffy towels and Molton Brown toiletries, plus there is a separate downstairs loo. Mas des Vignes opens onto a terrace with dining tables in the sun and shade, overlooking the enclosed garden and vineyards just over the fence. While grown-ups soak up the sun on the loungers, children can safely play on the lawns and on the swing, or splash on the steps into the shallow end of the 10 metre pool.

Location Information

With the clue in its name, Mas des Vignes looks out over Cote de Rhone vineyards, most famous for the rich Chateau-Neuf-du Pape red but also eminently quaffable whites and roses. The nearest café, restaurant and local shops to Mas des Vignes are in the village of Carvaillargues 3kms away and there are all the essentials in the arcaded market town of Bagnols-sur-Ceze, 10 minutes’ drive.

The quiet rural, setting is nicely off the well beaten tourist track but five of the most famously beautiful ‘Parcs Naturels’ in France are less than hour’s drive to the north, east south or west - Provence, the Luberon, the Ardeche, Cevennes and the Camargue. Whichever families choose to explore, there are ancient hilltop villages to visit, all kinds of outdoor activities, from horse riding to kayaking, and gorgeous gorges to spend a day on river beaches.

The area is most renowned for its rich Roman heritage, from the incredible Pont du Gard Aqueduct, (where families can picnic by the river beneath), to the Amphitheatre and Triumphal Arch in the historic city of Orange, both 30 minutes’ drive. The elegant medieval market town of Uzes is also only half an hour away, which has buzzing pavement cafes for people watching, ancient towers and castles to explore, a bustling market on Saturdays and the serious pester power attraction of the Haribo ‘Musee du Bonbon’!

Just outside Uzes, families can spend a day at the La Bouscarosse water park or a real discovery is the Green Park ‘Magic Farm’ which has lots of fun play areas, from a play fort to trampolines, and friendly animals to pet. If grown-ups want to stock up on fine wine in Chateau-Neuf-du-Pape, it’s conveniently close to the fab Parc Amazonia where little adventurers can follow a fun Mayan trail featuring rope bridges and temples, a maze, a little train, ride-ons and a 4x4 safari.

Nearest medical services: Bagnols-sur-Ceze, 10 minutes’ drive.
Getting here: The nearest airport is Avignon, 45 mins, which has flights from the UK with Flybe and CityJet. Ryanair flies to Nimes, 1 hour away, and also to Montpelier (70 mins), as well as Easyjet and BA. There is even more choice of flights to Marseille, 90 minutes away.
