BFB's Overview

Maison de Philomene is proof that creating somewhere really special can't be rushed. A modern renovation could have taken less than a year but owners Adrian and Denise have spent four years lovingly restoring this 18th century Breton country house to fabulous standards, reclaiming and re-cycling original features and using traditional methods and materials, from lime rendering the walls to hand-crafting staircases, doors and kitchen units. Not only will the grown-ups be wowed by the effort that's gone into the property itself, but the end result is somewhere really family friendly too.

The ‘maison' is set in 1.5 acres of grounds including an enclosed rear garden and a fenced, 8 x 4.5m pool, heated to a cosy 28°C and with a host of floats and inflatables, so while children have fun, parents can watch on from loungers on the 10x10m deck or the adjacent dining terrace (which has a handy wc). Elsewhere in the grounds, children will find ride-ons, a trampoline, play house, slide and swings, plus there's a flower-filled wildlife garden to chase butterflies, listen to the birdies or play hide and seek amongst the trees.

The open plan, beamed ground floor of Maison de Philomene provides a spacious, sociable space where cooking and dining, watching the Freeview TV and playing with the toys or games all come together beautifully. Families can snuggle into deep leather Chesterfields by the wood burning stove, enjoy meals around the 10-seater table with antique carved Breton chairs and wander through French doors to the patio and pool. An open archway leads into the kitchen area which is rustic in character, with flagstone floor and reclaimed, solid oak units, but also equipped with the latest appliances and featuring a large island unit/breakfast bar for playing TV chefs! Also on the ground floor and particularly handy for parents with babies or toddlers, ‘Chambre Chenille' (which means caterpillar) has an amazing antique double bed and furnishings, space for a cot, plus a large ensuite with a double hydro massage shower, modern basin and wc.

A handmade spiral staircase, made from the reclaimed chestnut floorboards, winds to the first floor landing and two other amazing ensuite double bedrooms. Chambre Sauterelle (meaning grasshopper) and Chambre Libellule (meaning dragonfly - to continue the wildlife theme!), both have imposing Corbeille tapestry beds, space for a cot, antique furnishings and ensuites with a double hydro massage shower, modern basin and wc. The final bedroom and a delight for children, is the large Chambre Herisson (meaning hedgehog) in the attic, beneath the exposed rafters and featuring twin antique beds and a fold out double sofa bed. Also in the attic is a lovely large family bathroom with roll top bath with bath toys provided, a modern basin and WC.

In these wonderful surroundings, everyone can completely unwind and the owners are also close at hand in the adjacent 'Victorian quarters' (the two windows and door seen to the left of the exterior photo) to offer fantastic first hand advice, emergency assistance and babysitting on request, while maintaining a low profile and without intruding – although the cat will probably be on patrol!

Accommodation Overview:

Maison de Philomene sleeps 8 to 10 people, plus two travel cots in four bedrooms with a bathroom a piece. One ensuite double bedroom is easy access as its on the ground floor, whilst two ensuite double bedrooms are on the first floor, and the fourth ‘family bedroom', with twin beds and a double sofa bed, is on the second floor, adjacent to the family bathroom. Two bedrooms have space for one cot and two bedrooms have space for two cots.

Downstairs, the kitchen is well equipped with all mod cons including relaxation essentials such as a dishwasher, microwave and a washing machine. The lounge comes with UK TV via Freeview and a handy DVD player.

Outside, the extensive garden, BBQ terrace and gated heated swimming pool are exclusively for use by guests of the Maison. There's plenty of space for both relaxing and playing ball games.

Rental prices (see prices tab) include linen (except pool towels & cot bedding), welcome hamper (for stays of 7nts or more) and utilities. There are no hidden or extra charges. The swimming pool and garden are not shared and are solely for guests use.

Location Information

Maison de Philomene is set in the ‘Cote d'Armor' region of rural Brittany but also convenient for day trips to the North and South coasts. The nearest village, which has a bar and general store, is just a 3-minute drive and the nearest towns are only 5-10 minutes drive, for a wider choice shops, supermarkets, restaurant and amenities. The nearest market is at Mur de Bretagne(10 minutes drive) on Friday evenings and, besides lots of stalls piled high with local produce (including live chickens!), families can often enjoy traditional Breton music and dancing.

Brittany's Emerald coast, is just 45 minutes drive and a firm favourite with families because of its glorious beaches and tiny coves for spending hours peering into rockpools or having a go at crabbing. The southern Brittany coast also boasts dozens of vast, un-crowded beaches to pack a picnic and head off with the bucket and spade.

The largest lake in Brittany, Lac de Guerledan, is only nine miles from the Maison, with lake beaches for safe bathing and a host of watersports, from pedaloes and kayaks to motorboats and lake cruises. There are plenty of places for refreshments on the shore and throughout the summer a floating restaurant to enjoy dinner on the water. For somewhere a little quieter, Lac Bosmeleac is slightly closer (7 miles) with just one restaurant overlooking the lake.

Among the many places to visit nearby, Abbaye de Bon Repos makes an interesting outing, with a medieval bridge, weir and salmon stairs plus a Creperie to try the most famous Breton speciality and a Sunday morning market (from Easter to October) to buy local produce and handicrafts. Concarneau is a bustling fishing port and picturesque walled town with countless creperies, bistros and Breton gift shops crammed within the granite ramparts. Pontinvy (20 minutes drive), formerly known as Napoleanville, has an impressive chateau, interesting old quarter and some very nice shops.

For more exhilarating family days out, Amoripark at Begard has an indoor and outdoor pool with cascades and water slides plus trampolines, bowling, 130 metre toboggan run, water chutes, bumper boats, pedal karts, mini golf, summer sledging and toddlers playground. Cobac Parc, set in 12 hectares of woodland between Rennes and Saint Malo, also offers around 30 activities including a carousel, mini golf, go karting, swimming pool with chutes, inflatables plunging down ‘The Rapids', monkey bridges, trains, wildlife museum, quad track and bouncy castles. Also between Rennes and St Malo is the zoo and gardens at Le Bourbansais Chateau and near Brest (1hr 30) Oceanopolis has around 1000 species of marine life in polar, tropical and temperate discover zones.

  • This is an excellent property, exceedingly well equipped with all manner of games, toys, cots, changing mats, and wonderfully safe. The owners have put considerable thought in to provision throughout the property both indoors and outdoors. It surpassed all our expectations in every possible respect, and I would highly recommend it.Review dated 18/08/2014
