BFB's Overview

Now is it the cool, contemporary styling of this Charentaise farmhouse that BFB loves most, or the 10 acres of landscaped garden and woodland, with a newly refurbished pool. The combination makes Le Grand Pezet a fabulous setting for extended families and friends to holiday together in the lap of luxury. Not only is the 5-bedroom farmhouse swish and spacious for 6 adults, 4 children and babies in cots, or two more couples.

The original farmhouse was extended many years ago to incorporate the adjoining stone barn as a wow-factor sitting room, pretty much along the lines of a medieval grand hall, complete with 2-storey stone walls, oak beamed ceiling, an enormous fireplace and solid oak minstrel’s gallery. Today, funky minimalist furnishings let the character shine through, whilst still being a comfy space for everyone to relax, including a cosy corner with bean bags for little ones to watch TV and DVD’s. There's also a new record player for vinyl fans. A ‘chef at home’ can be arranged to serve up family feasts in the designer dining room, by an elaborate woodburner, and the large open plan kitchen includes a handy dining area for rustling up baby and toddler brekkies and snacks.

French doors open onto the courtyard, door from the kitchen opens onto a vast, oak roofed verandah overlooking the garden, with another dining table for 10 and long corner sofas to flop down in the shade with a good book or an ipad. From here families can drift down to the lower terrace, with its deckchairs and bean bags, overlooking the sloping lawn to the pool that’s safely fenced so children can’t run or roly-poly straight in! The 15x6m pool has been newly refurbished, with a paddling pool and Roman steps so babies and toddlers can splash in the shallows, plus an adjacent pool house has a fridge to keep the poolside drinks nice and cold. The 4 acres of landscaped lawns provide plenty of space for children to play garden games, bounce off energy on a giant trampoline and play families in the Wendy House. Guests also have 6 acres of private woodland to explore, with a bamboo forest for jungle adventures, mown grass paths to perfect picnic clearings and a small orchard of figs and cooking apples.

Accommodation

Le Grand Pezet is a traditional 5-bedroom farmhouse, in the peace and seclusion of a 4-acre landscaped garden and 6 acres of woodland. The wow-factor focal point of the main house is a stone barn that has been incorporated as a 2-storey sitting room that’s a modern take on a gothic grand hall, with designer sofas and armchairs, plus a cosy corner of bean bags for kids to curl up watching TV and DVD’s. The large farmhouse kitchen diner is bright and modern, including a range oven and hob, American-style fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher, etc plus a dining area and French doors open onto the courtyard, door from the kitchen opens to the huge covered veranda, with a larger dining table that seats 10, big corner sofas and a gas BBQ. Although everyone loves eating outdoors on holiday, there is also a funky dining room that seats 10, plus high chairs, with a feature stone fireplace and wood burner.

Two of the bedrooms in the farmhouse are on the ground floor - the Garden Room which has doors to the upper terrace and the Orchard Room - which can both be set up as a super king size bed or twin room. The Garden Room has an ensuite shower and wc; the Orchard Room has an even more large and luxury ensuite with a bath/shower, twin washbasins, bidet and WC. On the first floor, The Gallery Room has a super king size bed (or twin) and a private balcony overlooking the upper terrace, plus an open plan ensuite shower room with twin washbasins and an enclosed WC. Two attic rooms are ideal for children both with twin single beds. In the annexe, the Rose Room can be set up a super king size bed or twin room, with a wood burning stove, French doors to the courtyard and ensuite shower room/wc. The May Room has a double bed, French doors to the courtyard and ensuite shower room/wc. A laundry room is also in the annexe with a washing machine, washbasin, dryer, ironing board and a drinks fridge.

Just below the big covered veranda of the farmhouse, a lower terrace is set out with giant bean bags and deckchairs overlooking the sloping lawn to the fenced swimming pool. The 4 acres of landscaped garden includes a giant trampoline, Wendy House and swing plus there is a further 6 acres of private woodland to explore.

Location Information

Le Grand Pezet is surrounded by fields of sunflowers, pine forests and vineyards in the Charente region of South West France, renowned for its warm and sunny Gulf Stream climate. The pretty local village of Brossac is a within a 5 minute drive or a 10 -15 minute cycle ride in typically French styley – with all-important boulangeries for baguettes and pastries as well as a bank, pharmacy, restaurant and a butcher who sells delicious homemade ready meals to take away. The larger market town of Chalais is only 10 minutes’ drive and for a ‘big shop’ there are large supermarkets approximately 4-5 miles away. Idyllic Aubeterre-Sur-Dronne (20 mins) is also recognised as one of ‘les plus beaux villages de France, where the Charente region blurs into the Dordogne.

Great for families is the lakeside resort of Etang Vallier, just a couple of miles from Le Grand Pezet, with a sandy beach and watersports, bungee trampolines, pony rides, mini golf, and restaurants. For the grown-ups, numerous local vineyards offer tours with tastings of the local Pineau aperitif and the famous brandy houses at Cognac are just under an hour’s drive. Wine Tasting tours can also be easily arranged.

For shopping and sightseeing, museums and galleries, the historic and cosmopolitan city of Bordeaux is an hour away and very family friendly. Tuk-tuk tours, open top coaches and river cruises are an easy way to see the sights with babies and toddlers in tow and a highlight for young and old alike is the misty architectural installation of the Mirroir d’Eau, cleverly designed to reflect the Palais de la Bourse. To the west of Bordeaux, Zoo de Bordeaux-Pessac is another popular day out for families and the Atlantic coast beaches are just a little further around Arcachon.

Nearest medical services: Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire A&E

Who owns this place?

We are a family of four with two girls aged 6 and 3 living in Hampshire having recently moved out of London. We bought Le Grand Pezet in Dec 2015 having spent several summer holidays in The Charente. We wanted a rural retreat in the sun that was an easy drive from the UK, had a pool (critical factor!) and enough space to invite other families and friends to spend summers with us. A peaceful hideaway where the children could run free.

What do they love about it?

We have talked for many years about buying a property in France and have explored many potential 'departments'. The 'less widely known' Charente is beautiful - sunny with fields of sunflowers and vineyards - and is very much the 'real' rural France. We chose the house because it is full of historic character with spectacular grounds and the enormous pine trees remind Eldon of New Zealand. We love it for so many reasons but also of course because the girls love it.

What do the kids love about it?

The girls now spend their summer holidays with their friends in the pool, on the trampoline, in the Wendy House or exploring the forest. They play hard all day (which they love) and sleep deeply all night (which we love!)

  • A truly wonderful house with a great indoor/outdoor area where we spent most of our time. Can highly recommend.Review dated 27/08/2019

  • We absolutely adored our stay at Le Grand Pezet. The house is gorgeous with everything you could need travelling with little ones - ours especially loved the playhouse, swimming pool and trampoline, and the beanbags and dvds came in useful when they needed a bit of quiet time. Otherwise they were happy off exploring the beautiful grounds - and it was just the most peaceful setting for us to unwind and we relaxed immediately on arrival, which is unusual for me! We were absolutely blown away and really hope we can go back soon.Review dated 10/06/2019

  • What a perfect house for a wonderful extended family holiday! Incredibly spacious, and luxurious, with everything you need. The pool, obviously, was a real highlight (and it's much bigger than it looks in the photos, and is very well stocked with pool toys, inflatables etc), and the kids (and bigger kids) also loved the huge trampoline, the spacious grounds with loads of outdoor toys (many fun games of badminton, bowls, football etc) and the wonderful large lounge (which very quickly became the indoor playroom filled with the large array of kids toys that were available in the house). There's loads of space for all eating together - both outside and inside - and a very well equipped kitchen. Also worth saying, that despite the pretty extreme heat in the week that we stayed (about 37c one day) the house stayed lovely and cool. Plenty to do in the local area - lots of lovely lake and river beaches around, as well as nice towns etc to vis ...Review dated 30/08/2018

  • We had such a lovely family holiday at Le Grand Pezet, June 2018 six adults and five children staying in the main house. The house and gardens are amazing so much space to really relax and unwind. The children were well catered for with toys, games & DVD's (even the adults as well) to entertain when we had a little rain, outside they had fun times around the pool, with lots of pool toys to play with, on the trampoline and exploring the huge garden. Everything you need for babies from cots, highchairs, changing mat to baby gates and monitors was provided. Family meals were easily prepared in the well equipped kitchen and eaten on the family table on the terrace which was great fun, we spent a lot if time outdoors which in a sense is a shame as the house is so comfortable and beautifully decorated, we could imagine cosy winter holidays here. And the owners were very helpful (not least in organising for a lovely meal to be ready for us to pick from the excellent local butchers on our arrival). All in all, I couldn't recommend this house highly enough.

Kate the owner was so helpful in the run up to our holiday answering any questions we had and was contactable throughout our holiday, we met a lovely man called Ian who popped round a couple of times to check everything was ok and maintain the pool. Nothing was too much trouble and every thought had gone into making our stay so relaxing and enjoyable. We will certainly be telling our friends about this lovely place.
