BFB's Overview

Fans of CBeebies ‘Down on the Farm’ will be giddy to follow in the welly steps of JB and the crew to this family-run farm in Dorset, where they came to film farmer Jimi and his calves in 2016.

There’s been a farm here since the 1700’s but Jimi’s grandfather, Jim senior, took it on in 1929 and steered it through the war years, adapting to new fangled methods and working the fields until the ripe old age of 95. With the same passion and commitment as his grandfather, Jimi has not only doubled the size of Launceston Farm but also been growing his crops and rearing his animals organically for 7 years. But Launceston Farm is a real family business too and with a little help from Jimi’s mum, sister, wife and 3 young children, they’ve added two cosy self-catering cottages, a brand new swimming pool and turned the farmhouse into a fab 6-bedroom home for families and friends to have a great break in the country, close to the coast.

The farmhouse, in particular, has everything, multi generational groups could wish for, such as a family room with a vast corner sofa and giant Buddha bags, a 40” Smart TV with Netflix, a Wii games console and Sonos sound system, as well as a separate sitting room for grown-ups, with a roaring fire, Smart TV and even a bar. The family room also has a play area with a teepee and dress up ‘boutique’ as well as board games, books and DVD’s. Families can cook up a feast on the Aga in the big farmhouse kitchen and order home-cooked ready meals for the freezer or book chef Sarah to cook up a delicious dinner or prepare a farmhouse Full English. Besides the Farmhouse, couples with a baby can rekindle a little romance in the beautiful 1-bedroom Flint Cottage or the ground floor Bothy apartment, sipping Champagne in an outdoor bateau bath in a private, walled courtyard with a cosy outside fire.

The Farmhouse, Flint Cottage and Bothy all share access to the acres of walled garden and orchard at Launceston Farm where children can safely play the days away while grown-ups unwind. The lovely lawn is perfect for family games of footy, cricket, tennis, badminton or croquet, with all the bits and bobs provided, or children can let their imagination run wild in the Orchard with its willow tepee, tree swings and toddler play area with a sand pit, play house and mud-pie kitchen. Little ones will love meeting spring lambs in the orchard and everyone can have fun hunting out eggs from the free ranging chickens. Families can stoke up a barbecue for sizzling summer suppers and there’s even a firepit for toasting marshmallows under the stars. Besides enjoying the great outdoors, kids and adults alike also have the luxury of a new indoor 12m swimming pool and sauna, heated by a biomass boiler, so, come rain or shine, nothing dampens the fun down on Launceston Farm!

Accommodation overview

Launceston Farm comprises the 6-bedroom Farmhouse, 1-bedroom Flint Cottage and 1-bedroom Bothy apartment. Each one has been individually and lavishly furnished to achieve the perfect balance of period style and boutique chic, with luxury touches, the latest mod cons and a long list of baby gear available.

The beautiful Georgian red brick Farmhouse is a superb, spacious house for up to 12 family and friends plus babies and two cots are provided. Two living rooms makes things a whole lot easier, as grown-ups can make the sitting room their own while children watch movies and play games in a big family room. The sitting room has comfy sofas, an open fire and a 48” Smart TV with Freeview . The family room has a huge corner sofa which seats 12, plus two giant Buddha bags, an open fire with fire guard, a Sonos Sound system, 40” Smart TV with Netflix, Freeview, a DVD player and a Wii console. The family room also has a play area with a dress-up ‘boutique’, giant chalkboard, teepee, toys, board games and books. The farmhouse kitchen has been equipped to chef Sarah’s exacting standards to make self-catering a pleasure, whether slow cooking something scrummy in the Aga or rustling up something simple in the electric oven with a 4-ring hob. A double fridge, separate freezer and wine cooler are in the well-stocked pantry and a separate utility room has a washing machine, tumble dryer, clothes airer, iron and ironing board. A farmhouse table in the kitchen seats 12 for big breakfasts and two high chairs plus a booster seat is available, or groups can make mealtimes a more formal occasion in the lovely, light dining room which seats 16 and has glass doors onto the outside terrace. The Farmhouse has six ensuite bedrooms, affectionately named after the fields; Penfold, Orchard, Scraggs, Meadow, Parsonage and Hungry Hill! Four can be set up as a double or twin and two have double beds. All the bedrooms have a 32” Smart TV and a shower room with a wc and three bedrooms also have a freestanding slipper bath. There are two more loos on the ground floor. Up to 2 dogs are allowed at the Farmhouse and there is a special Dog House with two kennels, adjacent to the Farmhouse.

Location Information

Launceston Farm covers over 2000 acres of the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Dorset/Wiltshire border and within easy reach of the M3 and A303 – making it an easy escape to the country. It’s perfect for walks and bike rides from the garden gate or families can head to the Jurassic Heritage Coast for days at the seaside, only 40 minutes’ drive away.

A fab, thatched village pub, The Langton Arms is only 5 minutes’ walk from Launceston Farm, which was voted the best pub in Dorset in 2016. It has a big beer garden with a play area, as well as a traditional skittle alley and top notch gastro food, including a children’s menu, is served in the bars and Stables Restaurant. The nearest shop is 4 miles away and Salisbury, known as ‘the city in the countryside’, is 15 miles away, with its pointy spired cathedral and crammed with shops and cafes. When visiting Salisbury, Wilton House nearby has an awesome adventure playground and 22 acres to find the perfect spot for a picnic.

With 3 children of their own, the owners have loads of recommendations of places to go and things to do which are within easy reach of the farm. One of their simplest pleasures is hunting for fossils and crabbing in the rock pools at Kimmeridge Bay or there are miles of sandy beaches at Bournemouth and Studland. Another favourite is a trip on the Swanage Steam Railway, boarding at Corfe Castle and chuffing along to the quintessential seaside town of Swanage. The one attraction that always has their kids squealing with delight is Farmer Palmers Farm Park with guinea pigs to pet, lambs to feed and piglet racing to cheer on, plus a huge barn full of fun with a soft play area, bouncy castle, bale slides, ride on tractors and more.

Families really are spoilt for choice with so many major attractions in the region, from Longleat Safari Park and Monkey World as seen on TV, to the Splashdown Water Park in Poole and Peppa Pig World at Paultons Amusement Park.
