BFB's Overview

Gazing on dreamy Umbrian hills, with a glass of Prosecco to hand, is surely a taste of the sweet, sweet life Italians call La Dolce Vita and even the most frazzled parents can utterly unwind in the stunning setting of La Ranca. Golf lovers, in particular, will be in seventh heaven, because not only does La Ranca overlook wooded Umbrian scenery in all directions but also ancient Antognolla Castle and the manicured fairways of Antognolla golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. Having the golf club on the doorstep also means guests can relax in the club house bar in the evenings and sample home-cooked Umbrian dishes in Il Caldara restaurant, or enjoy their handmade pizzas cooked in an ancient wood-fired oven.

La Ranca is one of two independent houses, converted from a 17th century farmhouse and retaining much of the original character throughout, from rustic beamed ceilings and terracotta tiled floors to a traditional Umbrian dining kitchen with a wood burning stove. The cosy sitting room has been tastefully furnished and families can snuggle down on the sofas to play with the toys provided, or watch Sky TV and DVD’s, or stream a movie or games through free Wi Fi. From one corner of the sitting room, a stone staircase leads to the first floor where there are two spacious bedrooms which can be made up as doubles or twins, plus two gleaming bathrooms.

French doors lead to La Ranca’s enclosed garden, where children can safely play while parents drink in the panoramic views and stoke up a barbecue on east and west facing dining terraces. Families can also enjoy a refreshing dip in a private, 5m x 2m swimming pool which is raised up and has glorious views over the Antognolla Estate.

Accommodation overview

La Ranca comfortably sleeps 4/5, plus two babies in cots. From the front garden the main entrance opens into a lovely, cosy sitting room, furnished with comfortable sofas, Sky TV, DVD player, a stereo, toys and a small library of books. French doors lead to an east facing dining patio which is bathed in morning sunshine, adjacent to the lawn area where children can play, and the private, 5m x 2m swimming pool. From the sitting room, steps lead down to a farmhouse dining kitchen, which has a wood burner and is well equipped for Umbrian home cooking and family meals together, including a 4 ring gas top stove, a microwave, a refrigerator, a dishwasher, a washing machine and an extendable dining table. French doors lead out to a west-facing patio, with another dining table and chairs for sunset meals al fresco. On the first floor, the master bedroom can be made up as a queen-sized double or twin bedded room and has an ensuite with a bath, shower, bidet, washbasin and WC. The second bedroom can also be made up as a queen-sized double or twin bedded room and has a third single bed that can be used as a sofa. Another gleaming bathroom is next door, with a bath, shower, bidet, washbasin and WC.

Location Information

In Umbria’s unspoilt ‘green heart’ of Italy, La Ranca is set on a hillside, overlooking the 1000-hectare Antognolla Estate, with its manicured fairways of an 18-hole, championship golf course and an ancient castle, peeping through the cypresses. The history of the castle goes back centuries and it’s believed the estate takes its name from the brother of Cleopatra’s beloved Marc Anthony, who retreated to this spot back in Roman times.

The Antognolla Golf course (1km) has a club house bar which is open to non-golfers in the evenings, and also Il Caldaro restaurant which serves home-cooked Umbrian specialties and handmade pizzas that are traditionally cooked in a wood fired oven which is hundreds of years old. The nearest local shops are 7kms away in the small town of Pierantonio and the ancient Umbrian market town of Umbertide is only 10 minutes drive, with a wider choice of shops, many trattorias and pavement cafes.
The capital of Umbria, Perugia, is less than half an hour’s drive (25kms) and well worth a trip to explore the medieval walled town of piazzas and palazzos, but also discover the buzzy vibe of a lively university city. The international Jazz festival in July is one of the world’s most prestigious and Perugia is also home to Perugina Baci chocolates, with tours and tastings to tempt chocoholics of all ages.

Many of Umbria’s most beautifully preserved hilltop towns are within an hour or so striking distance, including Orvieto, Todi and Gubbio. The sacred birthplace of St Francis, Assisi, is also only 55kms and despite the coach loads of visitors who flock here, the vast basilica in his honour is a sight to behold and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Besides just chilling out at La Ranca, families can pack a picnic for a day on the sandy shores of Lake Trasimeno (25kms) to paddle in the calm, fresh water or hire a pedalo. There are three beaches to discover close to the historic walled town of Castiglione del Lago and many flock here simply to indulge in long leisurely lunches in fine lakeside restaurants. Another fun option nearby is the Tavernelle Water park, which isn’t massive but has slides, rafts and lagoon pools to suit all ages, plus plenty of sunbeds, a restaurant and bar.

Nearest Medical services (GP and A&E): Umbertide, 12kms.

Getting here: The nearest international airport is Perugia (40 kms).

David, Chrissie, Elisabetta, Lucia and Cuba all live at Casa San Gabriel.
David is an Australian who married English girl Chrissie and they moved to Italy in August 2003.
David teaches English in the local area and Chrissie looks after Casa San Gabriel and the girls.
Both girls Elisabetta (15) and Lucia (13) were born in Italy and go to the local schools in Pierantonio and Perugia.
Their family is completed by Cuba and Bessie, their very friendly dogs.

David, Chrissie, Eli, Luci and Cuba

What do they love about it?

We all love living at Casa San Gabriel.
We live in a beautiful valley, surrounded by nature and peace and quiet. We are lucky that we are close to the village where the girls go to school and to the shops and also to the large university city of Perugia and so we can taken advantage of being near a big city.
In the winter we love to walk around the valley and work in the garden, the highlights are the vintage, where we pick our grapes and make our own wine ( the girls love pressing the grapes with their feet) and picking the olives and taking them to the mill to make our own olive oil. Our favourite lunch is pasta with our own olive oil.
In the summer we love swimming in the pool and visiting the beach at Lake Trasimeno. We love our weekly pizza nights and the girls love making new friends with the guests children.

What do the kids love about it?

No 1 is Cuba. She is the most gorgeous dog and all the children who come to stay really love her and normally want to take her home with them.
The playground is a huge hit, there is a little house that we have painted, swings, a slide and even a little car.
Our girls always enjoy having children to stay and love making new friends and they always give guests lots of toys to play with.
Our pizza night is great fun and the children love to make their own pizzas and then share them around.
Finally the swimming pool!!
