BFB's Overview.

When the well-heeled and well-to-do of the French bourgeoisie wanted homes to impress, the classical elegance of a ‘Maison de Maitre’ like this was the grand design of the day. The 3-storey house is steeped in period style and has been completely renovated in recent years so up to 12 family and friends, plus infants, can stay in the lap of French luxury.

The authentic character of the house has been retained, from the imposing stone fireplace in the Grand Salon to traditional French furnishings, but Maison Duras has all mod cons too, including a Nespresso in the well equipped dining kitchen, American fridge freezer/ice maker, free Wi Fi and a games console. Everyone can come together to watch UK Freesat TV and DVD’s, or play board games, in the large and comfortable Grand Salon or children can escape to a lounge of their own on the top floor, where the games console awaits and another DVD player. Two master bedrooms are also on the top floor, with beautiful beamed ceilings and luxury ensuite bathrooms, while four other ensuite bedrooms are on the first floor.

Naturally the house is set in a generous, well-tended garden and the house has a commanding position, overlooking the hills and vineyards of the Bergerac winelands. What could be more civilised than a game of croquet or badminton on the lawn and reclining by the heated pool, which is alarmed and fenced. Children have plenty of space to play in the garden, complete with a swing set, and grownups can relax, with fine local wines to hand, on a patio of luxury outdoor furniture or the al fresco dining terrace for 12 which has a Weber BBQ.

Accommodation overview

Maison Duras is a large country house with 6 bedrooms to sleep up to 12 people, plus 2 babies in cots. Two travel cots are available and there is space for these in all of the bedrooms. The dining kitchen is bright and modern, including a large oven and induction hob, a separate steam oven, microwave, Nespresso machine and double drawer dishwasher. A dining table extends to seat 12, plus two high chairs are available, and there is breakfast bar seating for 4. A separate larder has two fridge freezers and a utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer. The Grand Salon is a spacious living room with a huge real fireplace, comfy sofas, a large flatscreen TV, UK Freesat box, DVD player, DVD’s and board games. A second living room is on the top floor of the house which makes an ideal den for children, with a games console and DVD player. Two large master bedrooms are on the second floor, with attractive beamed ceilings, polished wood floors and luxury ensuites which both have a walk in shower, twin sinks, roll top bath and wc. The remaining 4 bedrooms are on the first floor, 3 of which have double beds and ensuite shower rooms and the fourth has twin beds and an ensuite bathroom. Jolie Fleuron is set in a large lawn garden with a heated pool, swing set, croquet, badminton and table tennis. There are two outdoor terraces for relaxing and dining outdoors – one with patio sofa and armchairs and the other with a Weber BBQ and dining table for 12, overlooking the pool. The property is strictly non smoking.

Location Information

Maison Duras is surrounded by the hills and vineyards to the east of Bordeaux, in the heart of this world famous wine region. The medieval town of Duras is just 5 minute’s drive, with a good variety of shops, cafes and restaurants in the cobbled streets, a large chateau and a bustling market on Mondays.

Lots of vineyards close by offer tours and wine tastings, from the local Domaines to the big Bordeaux wine houses, including Montbazillac and St Emillion, which is a very pretty town to explore and a world heritage site. The entire area is filled with charming little market towns, with the picture perfect medieval town of Issigeac about 45mins away — don‘t miss Sunday brunch in the garden at Chez Alain but allow a leisurely 2-3 hours to do it justice!

The medieval city of Bergerac (35 mins) has recently benefitted from a little restoration and rejuvenation and has countless bistros and restaurants, to sample the rich regional dishes, washed down with the fine local wines. On the outskirts of Bergerac, Aqua Park promises family fun, with four big swimming pools and water slides.

Just over an hour’s drive away, the grand old city of Bordeaux is well worth a day trip, with its monumental architecture along the banks of the Garonne, wide boulevards of shops, beautiful parks for a picnic and wealth of museums, galleries and other attractions.

For a change from the pool, families can have an afternoon on a lake beach at Blasimon (30 mins), where the gently shelving sandy shore is ideal for toddlers to splash in the shallows. For a day by the sea, the West Coast beaches (90 mins) beyond Bordeaux, including Arcachon and Cap Ferret are vast, sandy and often backed by sand dunes including the largest in Europe, the Dune du Pyla.

Bicycle hire is available to explore the local countryside or families can take a boat trip on the Dordogne River, less than an hour away. Golfers can book a round at the prestigious Chateau des Vigiers course nearby and non players can enjoy tasty croque frites or afternoon tea in Le Chai Brasserie, overlooking the fairways. Children will enjoy a trip to the ‘magic cauldron’ eco farm to meet the array of friendly animals and discover how the mohair from all the goats is traditionally dyed in a big pot. Wallabi Aquitaine, near Agen is an amusement park and chateau, with a pirate boat, roller coasters and children’s’ rides, log flume and water rapid ride.

Getting There: approximately 35 minutes from Bergerac airport and 1 hour from Bordeaux airport, both of which are served by low cost airlines from many of the UK’s regional airports. See www.skyscanner.net to help locate airports/flight options. The nearest train station, which is on the TGV network, is Libourne (35 mins). The ferry port of Bilbao is 4.5hrs with St Malo 6hrs and Calais 10hrs.

Nearest Medical Facilities: Duras (5 mins), with Doctors, dentist, physiotherapist and pharmacy.

Who owns this place?

Hello! My husband John and I bought Joli Fleuron in 2006 as a complete wreck! We both worked in the financial sector and we wanted a holiday home where we could invite friends and family to enjoy good food, good wine and good times. We renovated the house with large groups in mind and have enjoyed many happy times there. In 2015 we left the UK and decided to fully live and enjoy life in South West France. We bought a smaller house in a village 10 minutes from Joli Fleuron which will suits us and our two dogs. We now manage Joli Fleuron as a luxury holiday rental and 2021 will be our sixth season. Feedback from guests has been really wonderful. We are so glad that they enjoy it as much as we used to.

Pool-side at Joli Fleuron

What do they love about it?

We completely renovated Joli Fleuron after we bought it. It didn't even have a toilet! We wanted all the bedrooms to have a private en-suite and it to be a comfortable and enjoyable place to stay. We have stayed here in every season of the year and always have an amazing time. The local region is full of interesting places to see and things to do. So many good memories have been forged here, including our own wedding! We got married in the Baleyssagues village church in 2013 in front of our friends and family (and half the village!) and after the ceremony we strolled up to the house where we held a reception in the front garden. The weather was hot, the sky was blue and it was magical!

What do the kids love about it?

Whilst we don't have any children ourselves, we have always enjoyed entertaining our friends and family and that has meant a lot of children have stayed at Joli Fleuron! With ages ranging from toddler to teenager, there is something for everyone here. Looking at the guest book which we have kept, the main praise from kids has been for the pool but they have also commented on the croquet, the badminton, the kitchen disco, the local markets with their "steak and frites" and the croissants!! Happy kids mean happy parents!!

  • We had a fabulous time at Joli Fleuron and probably spent more time in the house because we didn't want to leave! Managing to provide luxury yet be child friendly - the whole family enjoyed the pool, games on the lawn, movie nights in the lounge and eating and drinking every night. All holidays should be like this! Perfect! We would love to come back!Review dated 27/09/2018
