BFB's Overview

L'Ecurie is one of four charming traditional Breton stone cottages ideally located in two acres of scenic seclusion, yet only a short walk to the village of Ploerdut with its bakery, bar, creperie and popular restaurant.

Friendly owners travel writer Beverley and interiors photographer Warren were enchanted by the region after numerous VW camper van adventures and made the big move from their home town of Brighton following the birth of their son Freddie in 2009. Their passion for the place is evident in the thoughtful renovation of the three pretty cottages which has retained their Breton character but equipped them with everything needed for a relaxing family holiday including romantic log burners, terraces, BBQs, comfortable lounges with sofas, TV, Freeview, DVD players and kitchens equipped with modern conveniences such as dishwasher, microwaves alongside the more standard gear.

The couple's experiences travelling with little Freddie encouraged them to equip the gites in a way that enables families to travel light and relax instantly on arrival. A long-list of useful nursery gear and toys (see Fast Facts) alongside thoughtful services such as babysitting and pre-arrival grocery and baby toiletries shopping, plus spacious enclosed gardens and a communal games room makes a stress-free break almost a given. Combine that with the new above-ground swimming pool with its gorgeous rural views and it’s easy to see why the guest book is littered with so many promises to return!

Accommodation Overview:
L'Ecurie is the newest addition to Guebernez, completed for 2012. It sleeps 5 people plus a cot. It has a large, bright open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area with a beautifully restored fireplace and a wood burning fire. The living room has two large sofas and a television with English freeview channels and a DVD player. The modern kitchen has a dishwasher, electric oven with gas hob, microwave and fridge freezer. Upstairs there are two bedrooms - a spacious double bedroom with a king-size bed and a second bedroom with a double and a single bed, and room for a cot. The bathroom has a large shower and a heated towel rail. The gite has lovely views across the surrounding countryside and a terrace for outside dining. It is also insulated for winter lets.

Location Information

Guebernez is ideally situated in central Brittany, surrounded by pretty villages, medieval market towns, unspolit countryside, lakes, lakeside beaches and the Morbihan coastline.

A short walk away is the quaint village of Ploerdut, which has a bakery, butchers, a creperie, bar and a hugely popular restaurant, all set around a pretty church square. The restaurant, Chez Marie attracts locals and tourists from miles around for its hearty home cooked food, which is great value at €11 for three courses and wine. Its bar is the focal point of the village, serving drinks and coffees all day long and into the early evening. The other bar, Le Welcome, is English owned and stays open until the last person leaves.

Morbihan's beaches are ideal for children. The closest is Larmor Plage (40mins drive), a large sandy beach with safe swimming, life guards and shallow rock pools for exploring. Alternatively, families with children often enjoy spending the day at one of the lake beaches. Lake Priziac is the nearest at around 10-minutes drive away. It's perfect for children, with a small sandy beach, play area, picnic tables and a cafe in the summer months. A little further afield (30mins) is Lac de Guerledan, Brittany's largest lake, which is a vast stretch of water with several sandy beaches, restaurants, cafes, and walking and cycling trails. Don't miss a meal on stylish terrace at Merlin, which overlooks the Lac.

There are many lovely harbour towns and historic places to visit close by. St-Goustan, with its half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th century and calendar of regular book and craft fairs that take place alongside the quay is a particular highlight especially during its annual oyster festival. Numerous boat trips exploring the islands in the Gulf of Morbihan are offered. Just across a narrow stone bridge is the historic town of Auray, whose cobbled streets are lined with boutiques, restaurants and cafes. Tourists and locals flock here at weekends, and for the Monday market.

Nearest Medical Services (GP & A&E): GP in the village (less than a mile) and a hospital 25-minute drive in Pontivy

Who owns this place?

Bev, Warren and their son Freddie are originally from Brighton but had always talked about escaping the city and living the 'good life'. After spending many summers exploring France in their VW camper van, they decided on central Brittany, viewed countless properties, and fell in love with Guebernez. Alongside looking after the guests, and Freddie, and the cats athey inherited with the house, they have managed to continue their careers as a travel writer (Bev) and an interiors photographer (Warren).

What do they love about it?

We love the space, the views, the beaches, the lakes, the quiet country lanes, the lack of traffic, the fresh air, the bright blue skies, the bread, the wine, the sense of community - the list goes on. We love spending time in the garden, growing our own veg, sitting on the deck and watching the sun set. Like most expats here, we were looking for a slower, less stressful way of life, and that's exactly what we got.

What do the kids love about it?

Children love having the space to run and play, splashing around in the swimming pool, exploring the barn, the secret garden, the Treasure Hunt, delving into the fancy dress box, putting on a puppet show, the rope swing, helping to pick the vegetables, feeding the chickens, collecting the eggs, and the impromptu games of football or French cricket on the lawn. They love the sandy beach and playground on the lake at Priziac, pedal boats on the Lac de Guerledan, and catching crabs in the rockpools at Larmor Plage. And Mums and Dads love being able to sit back and relax while the children do all of the above!

  • Bev, Warren and Freddie made us feel very welcome and provided useful information on what to visit in the local area, accommodation and setting were beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The kids loved having the run of the place and chasing the chickens!Review dated 20/03/2015

  • Guardian newspaper review March 2014: "While I'm admiring the bed linen and antique furniture, my boyfriend has more pressing matters on his mind. "It's OK – they've got CBeebies," he shouts up the stairs. Since becoming parents our priorities when travelling have changed somewhat. Rustic charm is all very well, but do they have a microwave, a washing machine, blackout blinds and Freeview? The answer to all these is yes, although the appeal of watching Big Barn Farm wanes when there are real chickens to chase. There's also a communal games room with table tennis, a dressing-up box and a stash of toys, DVDs and books. A small solar-heated pool has views over the valley".Review dated 29/03/2014

  • Fab holiday. The kids absolutely loved it and we had a genuinely relaxing break. The weather was very mixed so the log fire was wonderful - plus there was a propper sofa to enjoy it from. We were made to feel very welcome and lots of useful local intelligence was provided.Review dated 24/04/2012
