BFB's Overview

Past guests rave about this pretty cluster of three stone cottages with words like "Perfect", "Heavenly", "Magical" and "Paradise" littering the guest book and, with their simple but beautiful interiors, idyllic pool and truly mesmerising scenic setting, it is pretty easy to see why. But, from a parent's perspective, it is the fabulous attention to in family friendly touches and services that make Casa Gabriel the kind of place many find themselves returning to time and time again.

Owners Chrissie and David have two young daughters themselves which has also given them a keen insight into what it takes to enjoy a relaxing holiday with tots in tow. It shows in the handy collection of toys, books and baby gear provided (see breakdown in grey column left), the brilliant little kids play outdoor area and the ever popular weekly pizza night, when junior guests adore getting involved in making their own dinner and mum and dad get to enjoy a sociable glass of wine and some of David's home-made olive oil, which is also supplied in the handy cottage welcome packs.

When not exploring the many easily accessible nearby towns including the famously beautiful Arezzo, Assisi, Gubbio and Florence, grown-up guests generally find themselves unwinding on their private terraces, none of which are overlooked and each furnished both for lounging and dining including a BBQ, whilst little ones can be free to roam with new found friends of both the two and four-legged variety - Casa Gabriel has its own very sweet dog and small Alpaca herd.

Accommodation Overview:
La Cantina (The Wine Cellar) is a pretty one bedroom cottage, set over two levels. The lower level consists of a kitchen, equipped with 4-ring hob, fridge and sink, and sitting/dining area with a double sofa bed (orthopaedic) which leads onto the terrace. The original external stairs have been been cleverly enclosed in a glazed extension and lead to a landing and double bedroom (with either twin beds or a double) plus a separate bathroom with shower (baby bath provided). Outside, there's a spacious terrace, covered by a shady pergola, with dining table, chairs, deckchairs and a BBQ plus breathtaking views over the verdant valley beyond.

Location Information

Casa San Gabriel is set down a 1.5km gravel road in a quiet rural valley just a few kilometres from the small village of Pierantonio, and a short drive from the bustling market town of Umbertide. Car hire is essential.

Owners Chrissie and David are a fabulous source of information on places to visit, things to do and places to eat, so do ask their advice, but here's some basic info:

Shopping: The village has a decent market each Tuesday whilst nearby Umbertide has one on Wednesdays. The cosmopolitan city of Perugia is just 25kms away (35min by train from the village) and has many shops, bars, bistros and cafes, as well as a well respected annual Jazz festival.

Sightseeing: The medieval centre of Assisi is within about 30mins drive and is said to be one of the best preserved in the world. Gubbio, another famously beautiful hilltop town is also with half an hour's drive and boasts many bars and restaurants amongst its cobbled streets, plus a funicular railway to the basilica on the top of Monteingino, which offers magnificent views of the town and mountains beyond. Florence is within around 90minutes drive.

Beaches: There are several sandy beaches alongside nearby Lago Trasimeno, of which the Harringtons highly recommend Sualzo beach near Passignano, which is within 30mins drive. There's also an excellent waterpark within 50minutes drive, which has four pools including a very shallow toddler/baby pool complete with little slides and fountains.

Kids Love: The Aplaca Farm about 10mins from Umbertide, the Citta della Domencia wildlife park with trains, play areas and Indian Village and the Perugina Chocolate Factory

Sports: There are several golf courses nearby that welcome visitors including the championship course at Antognolla. Watersports including canoeing are available at the Marmore national waterpark near Terni.

Eating Out: Restaurant Pomerancio in Umbertide has a nice outside seating areaand comes highly recommended. As deos La Locanda del Capitano in Montone, which is acclaimed for its beautiful setting in a small courtyard, great food and attentive service.

Getting There: Nearest airports are: Perugia (25mins drive), Ancona (90mns drive), Bologna Forli (90mins drive), Rome Ciampino (2.5hrs drive), Bologna Marconi (2.5hrs drive), Rome Fiumicino (2.5hrs drive) Pisa Galileo (2hrs drive). Try www.skyscanner.net to review the choice of available fllights.

Who owns this place?

David, Chrissie, Elisabetta, Lucia and Cuba all live at Casa San Gabriel.
David is an Australian who married English girl Chrissie and they moved to Italy in August 2003.
David teaches English in the local area and Chrissie looks after Casa San Gabriel and the girls.
Both girls Elisabetta (15) and Lucia (13) were born in Italy and go to the local schools in Pierantonio and Perugia.
Their family is completed by Cuba and Bessie, their very friendly dogs.

David, Chrissie, Eli, Luci and Cuba

What do they love about it?

We all love living at Casa San Gabriel.
We live in a beautiful valley, surrounded by nature and peace and quiet. We are lucky that we are close to the village where the girls go to school and to the shops and also to the large university city of Perugia and so we can taken advantage of being near a big city.
In the winter we love to walk around the valley and work in the garden, the highlights are the vintage, where we pick our grapes and make our own wine ( the girls love pressing the grapes with their feet) and picking the olives and taking them to the mill to make our own olive oil. Our favourite lunch is pasta with our own olive oil.
In the summer we love swimming in the pool and visiting the beach at Lake Trasimeno. We love our weekly pizza nights and the girls love making new friends with the guests children.

What do the kids love about it?

No 1 is Cuba. She is the most gorgeous dog and all the children who come to stay really love her and normally want to take her home with them.
The playground is a huge hit, there is a little house that we have painted, swings, a slide and even a little car.
Our girls always enjoy having children to stay and love making new friends and they always give guests lots of toys to play with.
Our pizza night is great fun and the children love to make their own pizzas and then share them around.
Finally the swimming pool!!
