BFB's Overview

When the frantic and frenetic pace of life is all too much, Casa Rural El Patio is the ultimate get-away-from-it-all bolthole for frazzled parents to relax and recharge. Tucked away in a spectacular valley on the edge of Gran Canaria’s Tamadaba Natural Park, everything slows right down to a standstill here so mum and dad can enjoy quality time with each other and the baby, lazing and playing by a private pool in warm, year-round sunshine.

El Patio is an authentic Canarian cottage that’s brimming with rustic charm, from the warm plastered walls and beamed ceilings to solid wood furniture, original artwork created by the owner. There are comfy, cosy corners to curl up with a book and a big stash of toys will keep little ones amused, including wooden toys from Mula and Lillabo, Imaginarium shopping sets, play cooksets and tea sets. Tiled floors with scatter rugs keep the cottage nice and cool when the temperatures soar and a pretty pool is just outside for a refreshing dip, with wide steps for toddlers to splash in the shallows. There are loungers set out by the pool for grown-ups to catch some rays and the outdoor dining table is in the shade of a bougainvillea draped pergola, overlooking the pool. El Patio is set in a typically Canarian gravel garden, planted with exotic plants (like the Peruvian Pepper Tree) and an orchard of fruit trees, plus the views down the valley are amazing and especially the blazing sunsets.

Accommodation Overview

Casa Rural El Patio sleeps up to 3 people plus a baby. The cottage has one large bedroom with two single beds which are usually pushed together as a king size and there is space for a travel cot which is provided. There is a sofa bed in the cosy living room and an extra single bed can be provided. The living room is also equipped with a flatscreen TV, DVD and CD player. The dining kitchen is rustic in style but fitted with modern appliances, including a fridge freezer and a built in oven, hob and extractor fan. The cottage has one bathroom, featuring a built in tiled washbasin, WC and shower.

El patio opens onto a shaded dining terrace and there is another table, chairs and sun loungers by the private pool, which is immediately in front of the cottage and the focal point of the typical Canarian garden.

Please note: The price is based on 2 adults and a baby. Additional guest of any age is charged 30 Euros per night. Please select from options and extras section when booking.

Location Information

Casa Rural El Patio is tucked away in the Ravine of El Risco, in North West Gran Canaria, on the edge of the dramatic, unspoilt landscape of the Tamadaba Natural Park and just over one hour’s drive from Gran Canaria's airport. The top half of the ravine is surrounded by spectacular basaltic walls studded with pine trees where impressive waterfalls form in the rainfall period. The ravine tumbles all the way to the sea and a string of black sand beach and volcanic rocky coves.

The village of Ageate is a slow and sleepy rural settlement where the leading poets of the Canary Islands used to meet in an exotic botanical garden, El Huerto del Flores and ponder the magnificence of the surrounding scenery. A good variety of local shops and services can be found in the pretty fishing port of Puerto de Las Nieves and there are excellent waterside restaurants to try exotic fish platters and seafood paella, finished off with creamy Ageate goats cheese. A seafront walk runs along the town’s largely stony beach and the sea is calmer than some of the other beaches to take a swim. Ferries also arrive in Puerto de Las Nieves from the capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz, and the smouldering pointy peak of Mount Teide is magnificently silhouetted in the sunsets.

There are many coves and volcanic beaches to explore along the coast, some of which have crashing breakers and strong offshore currents but others which are sheltered for swimming and superb for snorkelling. El Risco is renowned as one of the most beautiful beaches on Gran Canaria, with its stretch of black basalt sand washed by the waves, where children can play and paddle. At Las Salinas there are also several natural saltwater pools of varying depths, with ladders to climb in for a dip and areas for sunbathing or just admiring the sunsets.

Nearest medical services: 14kms (GP / A&E ?)

Getting here: El Risco de Agaete is over one hour’s drive (65 kms) from Gran Canaria’s airport, which has regular flights from the UK.
