BFB's Overview

Located in the heart of the Ria Formosa natural park, this Portuguese cottage cluster is perfect for lovers of nature, wildlife enthusiast and families in search of something off the usual beaten tourist track.

Arranged over extensive grounds with direct access into beautiful, protected parkland, the cluster provides an idyllic, rural retreat on the unspoilt eastern coast of the Algarve. Comprised of seven one and two-bedroom houses each with their own authentic yet simple style, there’s a wealth of shared, onsite facilities including two fenced swimming pools, a natural (sand fringed) swimming lake, children’s play area, games room, grocery shop, drink service and more.

Guests could happily mill about the cluster all day, taking in the views, wildlife spotting, splashing in the pool or playing in the gardens, but active families may prefer borrowing the clusters bikes and heading out to explore.

A UNESCO protected site (regarded as one of Portugal’s seven wonders), Ria Formosa offers families a real sense of adventure, whether by bike, paddle board, kayak, or more.

Home to over 200 species of birds, little ones will love playing spot the local flamingo or searching for the lesser spotted chameleon.

When the weather is warm, the owners often provide fun-filled activities for kids including crab racing, kite flying, bat watching and stargazing. It’s truly a great place for families to reconnect with nature and get back to a simpler way of life.

As for beach days, the parks tidal marches and lagoons are protected by a web of sandy islands and provide a choice of great beaches. We recommend Barril Beach which has family-friendly facilities including lifeguards, cafes, sunbed with shade and washrooms. For some parental indulgence, we recommend taking advantage of the owners babysitting connections to experience one of the empty reserve island beaches. Guests can have a picnic made up, borrow some beach kit and be chauffeured by boat for their own desert island experience.

Aside from above, it’s the owner’s attention to family-friendly detail which really sets this cluster apart. As parents themselves, they understand the struggles of travelling with kids and have since made it their aim to provide a real home from home experience, ensuring guests stays are as easy and relaxing as possible. There’s a complimentary laundry service, a thoughtful supply of baby gear and a great little onsite shop which is stocked with self-catering essentials, a choice of fine Portuguese foods and delicious ready meals to ease dinner times. They’re even offering breakfast from 2019 onwards. As for little ones, they’ll love the play area and outdoor, covered games room.

Location Information

Located on the unspoilt eastern Algarve coast, this child-friendly cluster is perfect for families looking to combine a relaxing beach holiday with a little more adventure. Discover our top selection of beaches, days out, local restaurants, activities and more below;

For Kids: Although there’s plenty to keep little ones happy onsite, there’s a wealth of places to discover for those in search of something different. You could try your hand at family mini golf in Quarteira, swim with dolphins or splash around in the waterpark the award winning Zoomarine centre or walk through the trees at Parque Aventura. For days away from the sun we recommend the children’s science museum which is just outside Faro city.

Active Guests; The cottages offer access to the Ecovia do Litoral which is a 214km bike path running along the Algarve coast. The owners can supply a selection of bikes, so families can choose to use them to tootle off to the beach or local restaurants or perhaps try something a little more strenuous. Those who prefer activities on water can try their hand at anything from sailing trips, catamaran tours and dolphin watching to SUP yoga, paddle boarding, kite surfing, water skiing, diving & more. Back on dry ground there are local tennis courts, horse riding centres, bird watching tours, photography safaris and walking trails. Whatever you fancy, the owners are always on hand to help guests arrange activities and recommend trips.

Golfers: It’s no secret, The Algarve is famous for its golf courses. The owners are happy to book guests into one of the ones nearby including, Colina Verde (a small inland 9-hole course situated in Moncarapacho) and The Benamor golf course (was designed by Sir Henry Cotton).

Beaches: There are a selection of beautiful beaches within 15km so there’s plenty of choice for visiting families. Fuseta beach is the closest (3.5km), it is situated at the end of the boat quay in Fuseta overlooking several islets and the islands of Fuseta and Tavira. It has a good café and is open all year round. From May to October there are also lifeguards, sunbeds and parasols to rent. The water at this beach tends to be a little warmer than those facing the open sea. For something a little different, families can get a ferryboat from the quay over to Fuseta island beach which from June to September has lifeguards, cafes, sun loungers and water sports. We also recommend Barril Beach which is reached by a miniature ‘steam train’, so is a big hit with little ones. There are changing rooms, cafes, bars, restaurants and shops by the beach and is popular with families. This beach is open all year round.

Getting there: Faro airport is approx. 20 minutes drive away and the owner can arrange transfers on request although they would recommend families hire a car.
