BFB's Overview

Just one day at the lovely Charentes Cluster B&B and cottages is enough to see why its guestbook has more promises to return than an Arnold Schwarzenegger film! The former 18th century farm is a pastoral scene to inspire the most reluctant of artists, the mouth-watering meals on offer could seriously rival a Michelin starred restaurant and the thoughtful extras for both pre-schoolers and their parents are superb.

The cottages beautiful original features such as 18th century oak beamed ceilings, exposed stonewalls; huge fireplaces and wooden floors are complemented with simple yet elegant furnishings. The attention to detail extends to thoughtful extras such as the hand-made organic soaps in the bathrooms, the ‘help yourself’ vegetable patch and delicious home-made jams and cookies in the welcome packs.

Weekly pizza making sessions for children of all ages are a real favourite with junior guests at Bois Bourdet. They love to get messy mixing the dough and then creating their own tasty toppings. Plus. Mum and Dad get to have a quiet couple of hours or so to relax and are then treated to a delicious pizza for lunch!

Accommodation Overview

House One is a private section of the main farmhouse at Charentes Cluster and sleeps 4 -7 (plus cots) in two or three bedrooms. The decor is contemporary farmhouse with pretty whitewashed and exposed stone walls combined with shaker-style furnishings and modern amenities such as dishwashers, microwaves, TV, DVD player and CD player. It also boasts its own private patio with furniture and a barbecue for dining al fresco, along with lovely views over Bois Bourdet's extensive gardens.

Location Information

Charentes Cluster is in the Deux-Sèvres region at the heart of the Poitou-Charentes and just five miles from the historic town of St. Maixent-L’Ecole. The owners are happy to book cycle hire and provide picnics for those who wish to explore. They can also advise on activities from golf (six excellent courses are nearby), horse riding, fishing and canoeing, to rock climbing, go-karting and even hot air ballooning! There are several lakes nearby including the beautiful Lac du Lambon (10mins drive), which has a sandy beach. The Atlantic coast is within an hour’s drive, as is the gorgeous pedestrianised old town of La Rochelle and the lovely Ile de Ré, a mecca for French holidaymakers. Cognac and Poiters are also within easy reach and well worth a visit.

Getting There: The nearest airports are Poitiers (45mins) , La Rochelle (1hr20mins) and Bordeaux (approx. 2hrs). Try www.skyscanner.net as a useful low-cost flight comparison. Alternatively, travel by train in just 2 hours from Paris (Eurostar to Paris approx 2 hrs + 2hrs Paris-Poiters). Eurostar can also be booked direct to Poitiers (approx 4hrs) and then car hire is available from Poiters rail station, Bois Bourdet is then just a 40 min drive from Poitiers. By ferry, St Malo is the closest port being four hours drive away, Caen and Le Harve are around five hours drive, whilst Boulogne and Calais are six and severn hours drive respectively. The owners will be happy to help with directions for the drive and recommend stop off points for lunch etc to break the journey once booked.

What do they love about it?

Bois Bourdet is set at the end of a pretty country lane in a dreamy rural ideal, yet within easy reach of shops, boulangeries & facilities. The tranquility of the countryside and local pretty towns are all within reach but we also love the culture & buzz of nearby Poitiers & La Rochelle. It is great to be able to also reach the beautiful beaches of the Atlantic coast within an hour and also enjoy the islands off the coast too. The local french people are charming and their genuine warm friendly nature makes this a wonderful & safe place to live and bring up a child. The gentle pace of life, great food & wine not forgetting the extra sunshine we often enjoy makes this an easy place to love!

What do the kids love about it?

Children of all ages love Bois Bourdet and what the area can offer.
Our safe fully fenced grounds allow them the freedom to run & explore and enjoy the countryside and the heated pool, play house (with blackboard & mini kitchen) , sand pit, trampoline swings & slide provide hours of fun. Feeding and collecting eggs from our chickens is also very popular.

Babies & toddlers love what we can provide; travel cots, high chairs, baby baths, changing mats, sterilisers, monitor, toys, as well as an all terrain buggy as it means Mum & Dad arrive a little less frazzled for the holiday!

  • Beautiful quiet rural setting and less than an hour drive from Poitier Airport. The local food market was an exceptional highlight, especially for food lovers like us. Owners who live on site were very nice and left us very much alone for the week. We arranged to have a meal on arrival and a further meal is offered on Monday evening with the other days spent self catering.Review dated 22/07/2017

  • Lovely pool and outdoor space for relaxing with great views. Near enough supermarkets and restaurants and only an hour or so to the lovely Ile de Re. The cottage is simply but beautifully done inside (especially upstairs) though has a few practical oversights which if addressed would make for a lovely stay.Review dated 27/08/2016

  • This is a great outdoor place for children with a pool, sandpit, swings and a great basket of toys inside. The meals are amazing for a treat. There's a wide variety of things to do nearby including medieval town and castles, markets, beaches, harbour towns and a brilliant prehistoric museum although some of them are a bit of a drive. The only downside is not being able to walk to a baker. Owners are friendly and helpful without hovering over you.Review dated 06/09/2014

  • We have just returned from an excellent week with our 4 and 2 year olds at Bois Bourdet. It really is an idyllic location and the kids just loved the gardens, picking cherries from the tree and collecting eggs from the chickens each morning. It's such a safe and peaceful environment for toddlers and mum n dad really enjoyed unwinding in the sun on the terrace. Xavier's cooking and hospitality also excellent, adults can enjoy a 'night out' without having to go anywhere. Would love to return.Review dated 03/06/2014

  • A beautiful place in a beautiful location. The thing that makes this stand out is the option to have a four-course meal prepared and served at your cottage (which was of stunning quality). This allowed often-overlooked parents feel like they were on holiday too!Review dated 16/08/2012

  • We had a wonderful holiday - there was plenty to keep our toddler entertained in the grounds (she particularly loved the wendy house and chickens!), being cooked for was a real treat and we would definitely recommend this property.Review dated 13/09/2010

  • We had a lovely time. Les and Louise were perfect hosts. It was even better that we could have an evening meal cooked by Louise on the aga - better than any restaurant. What a treat - we felt very spoilt!Review dated 09/05/2010

  • The new owners (Summer 2011) Xavier and Stephanie were very friendly hosts and Xavier is an exceptional cook. It was such a treat to have the baby safely tucked up in bed and have a delicious 5 course meal served on our private terrace in the evening sun.Review dated 13/06/2011

  • We enjoyed a wonderful one week stay here at the beginning of June (but we wished we had stayed for longer...).Samuel particularly enjoyed chasing the chickens, the playhouse and pool, as well as being able to run around to his heart's content. We particularly enjoyed the wonderful cooking, which can be served to you in your room or on your terrace, so there is no need to worry about finding babysitters. We can't recommend it highly enough!Review dated 03/11/2009

  • Day trips to Valley of the Monkeys, La Rochelle & Parthenay were really successful but the real holiday pleasure was back at base in the garden, with the chickens or enjoying the evening gastronomic delights. There was something for everyone - a perfect holiday, Thank you so much - we will return!!Review dated 03/11/2009

  • I would like to thank the chickens for providing me with hours of fun. The tractor was great, a little noisy but still great. The pool is where I perfected by back stroke, the little house is where I had a meal with the Queen, the sand pit was the beach at St Ouen. I loved every minute . The walks around the fields of sunflowers, more tractors (great!), the horses and just in case I have not mentioned the chickens, the chickens. If Finn loved, we love it more & the food was superb!Review dated 03/11/2009

  • The highlight of our stay was the evening meals - being new parents we miss going out to a restaurant, so it was fantastic to enjoy incredible dinners (plus aperitif and wine!) which were served to us on the terrace. All the time we knew that our 1-year-old was safely fast asleep just behind us, no doubt dreaming of another happy day chasing chickens and getting messy in the sandpit!Review dated 03/11/2009
