BFB's Overview

Birchill Farm and its cluster of six cottages (sleeping 2-7) has a magical quality for adults and children alike. Its tranquil location, set almost a mile from the nearest public road, allows parents to relax and enjoy seeing their little ones roam freely from the moment they arrive, whilst the brilliant indoor and outdoor play areas, toddler-friendly nature trails and interactive farm rounds have under 10s captivated from the outset.

It is evident that the farm's owners Simon and Margaret have drawn on their experiences of travel with their own brood of five and created a family-friendly haven complete with a fully enclosed, farm themed, outdoor baby and toddler zone. Featuring a farm shop, pony spring rocker, baby swing and an amazing 'Birchill Farm Tractor' play frame - there's plenty of opportunities for creative, imaginative and social play. For under 12's there’s a fantastic double towered castle with a drawbridge, climbing wall and slide. With swings and an ever popular giant trampoline, the play area provides an ideal spot for parents to relax, whilst their children are happily amused.

For wet days there’s an indoor play barn, especially for the under 5's, with a soft play area, a wooden play kitchen, lots of toys, games and activities - not forgetting comfy sofas and a coffee machine for mums and dads. Take a spin on one of the ride on toys or borrow a bedtime story from a library of children's books. In addition all of the cottages have a toy box filled with toys and games for the under 5's and for older children boxes of toys can be borrowed from the play barn. With a whole host of four-legged friends including Dotty the sheep, pygmy goats, ponies, donkeys, pigs, ducks, chickens and alpacas, even the most hard to please tot is easily kept fully entertained without ever leaving the grounds. That said there is plenty to tempt guests away - the many attractions of this slice of North Devon with the Tarka trail on the doorstep, family-friendly venues and lovely stretches of coast within a short drive, to name but a few. A long list of nursery gear is provided (see grey Fast Facts box) so even packing for the stay comes without the usual worries. Plus, with little ones worn out by evening, grown-up guests can enjoy relaxing nights in, especially when taking advantage of the excellent home-made frozen meals available from the Visitor’s Centre. Alternatively, babysitting can often be arranged, allowing parents the opportunity for a rare night out.

Accommodation Overview:
Oak Apple Cottage is a pretty two bed, two storey, detached cottage packed full of character with exposed beams and sloping ceilings. The spacious open plan living area houses a well equipped, white shaker style kitchen, with dishwasher, fan oven, fridge freezer and washer/dryer. The cosy lounge area has widescreen TV, DVD player and an electric wood burning effect stove. There is a dining area with seating for four. Upstairs there is a king size bedroom and a twin. A cot will fit into either bedroom. There is a family bathroom with a shower over the bath. Outside there is a fully enclosed terrace to the front of the cottage.

Location Information

Birchill's friendly owners Simon and Margaret are full of advice on things to do with young children locally having had their own brood of five to entertain.

Their tips include a swimming pool just ten minutes drive away, sailing, horse riding and quad biking. A visit to Rosemoor Garden, just 10 minutes away is said to be a must as it features a nature trail that will keep children amused for hours and a fun new play area. The restaurant serves decent lunches including children's lunch boxes, and a very tempting selection of cakes.

Another popular day out is a visit to one of the National Trust properties nearby. Arlington Court, Castle Drogo and Knightshayes Court are all about an hour's drive away. Children are very welcome and there are quizzes for them to do whilst looking around the house. Arlington Court is often a favourite due to the horse drawn carriage ride around the grounds.

For families who enjoy walking, Lydford Gorge on the edge of Dartmoor is always popular but it's not suitable for pushchairs and can be nail biting with little ones. Cyclists will thoroughly enjoy the Tarka Trail and guests can either bring their own bikes or hire them locally. Beach lovers will not be disappointed, with a great choice from wide stretches of sandy beach for surfing and sandcastle building or smaller coves perfect for rockpooling, all within a short drive.

  • This is a superb place to take kids of all ages. The friendliness if farmer Simon and his family is wonderful the facilitation of the daily animal feeding for children aged 1- 10 is superb and the toy barn represents a well stocked toy shop - add in beautiful scenery and well thought through baby and toddler stocked cottages ( bed guards , cots, toilet seats, sink stool, plastic cutlery etc etc) and this place is a dreamReview dated 20/07/2013

  • Birchill Farm Cottages with Simon and Margaret, the owners, have the best holiday setup we've ever been on. The kids loved it (4 and 15mths) and so did we. They've thought of everything and nothing is too much trouble. Their website is full of detail, their cottages have everything you could want (inc blackout blinds, covers over the plug sockets, childrens' knives and forks, the list goes on and on). And the play area and house of toys is superb. Farmer Simon is great with the animal feeding and gets all ages involved and is full of enthusiasm and the kids love him. You won't be disappointed if you book and we will be returning as so many of their other customers do.Review dated 04/09/2012

Location is a great base to explore Devon, but lots of things to do at the farm. The indoor play barn is outstanding. So many lovely toys.Review dated 04/10/2011
