BFB's Overview

This beautiful barn conversion in the Lot region of South West France is BFB through and through. Since falling in love with the place, the owners of Beauclerc have made it their mission to create somewhere really lovely and superbly equipped for babies and toddlers, so all families need to bring are some clothes and themselves.

By lavishing all their love and attention to detail on Beauclerc, the owners have brought classic style and standards to the relaxed environment of a traditional holiday home from home. The rustic and authentic French character has been carefully preserved and then enhanced with special finishing touches and the owners’ obvious desire to delight little ones as much as grown-ups.

Children will quickly discover that the house is full of gorgeous toys and fun things to do, plus a super-cute timber play cabin in the garden includes a dressing up box and plenty of kit for being arty and creative. Beauclerc’s funky lounge leads out to a dining terrace with a barbecue and there’s a separate area for children to spread out their stuff and play out of the sun.

The private pool at Beauclerc is safely gated and surrounded by smart timber decking with sun loungers for parents to soak up the sun and drink in the views, or play with baby in an inflatable paddling pool. Older children can free range in the garden and grounds around Beauclerc, taking turns on the classic tyre swing and playing with the various outdoor games.

Parents can keep an eye on the pool and garden from the large, open plan dining kitchen which is cool and contemporary with a gas range cooker, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle toaster and blender. A welcome pack of local goodies is provided and the owners can also stock the larder with a pre-arrival shop, fill the wine rack with fine local tipples, arrange home cooked meals or even a chef for the night.

The two bedrooms at Beauclerc are beautifully furnished and both have ensuite bathrooms plus a daybed downstairs can convert into a double for another couple if needed. If parents fancy a little pampering the owners can arrange massages, manicures and pedicures or fully checked babysitters can be booked so mum and dad can have a much needed night out at one of the region’s famous gourmet restaurants.

Accommodation overview

Beauclerc sleeps up to 5 people, plus a toddler and a baby, with a wooden cot and toddler bed provided. The master bedroom has a king size bed and an ensuite bathroom with walk-in shower, bath, basin and toilet. There is space for the cot in the master bedroom or just outside the door, on the upstairs mezzanine. The second bedroom can be set up with either a kingsize bed or as a twin, with an additional toddler bed if required. This ensuite has a bath, basin and toilet.

Location Information

Beauclerc looks out over a beautiful wooded valley that’s characteristic of the scenic Lot countryside to the east of the Dordogne. The region is criss-crossed with meandering rivers for picnics and paddling and the hills are topped with honey coloured medieval villages to explore winding cobbled streets.

In true French style, croissants and baguettes can be delivered from local boulangerie for breakfast. Within 15 minutes drive from the gite, Cazals, Saint Germain du Bel Air is and Catus have a wider variety of local shops, cafes, restaurants and excellent markets to stock up on the world famous local produce such as peaches, plums, walnuts, giant cepe mushrooms, rich pates and the confit du canard. A short distance from the property, Lac Vert is a large leisure lake with a nice waterside lawn for picnics and a lake beach where children can safely swim.

The main big town in the region is Cahors (30 minutes), which is renowned for excellent dark red wines which give the fine Bordeaux vineyards a run for their money. The town is encircled by the Lot river and families can take a boat ride from the fortified Pont Velentre to see Old Cahors from the water. Wednesday and Saturday mornings are market days and Cahors also has large supermarkets for a big shop.

Pointy chateaux peak through the trees and grace the hilltops throughout the Lot and little knights will be impressed by a trip to Chateau de Castelnaud (45 mins) with room after room of swords, weapons and armour from the battling years with the English. Rocamadour (45 mins) is an incredible village that is literally clinging to the cliffs and nearby Gouffre de Padirac is an amazing cave with a lift into its depths for a 45 minute walk through the caverns followed by a gondola ride to the end.

At Prehistoric Park, also close to Rocamadour, families can have fun following a pushchair friendly walk through a forest with life size dinosaurs around every corner or visit Monkey Park, to walk among free ranging monkeys and offer the cheeky primates popcorn for a closer encounter!

Near Gramat (45 mins) Animal Park makes another toddler and pushchair friendly day out, with friendly farm animals and local wildlife such as otters, bears and wolves.

Who owns this place?

French Loaf began life many years ago when an English couple fell in love with the Lot region and made it their home.
Today, their legacy is a holiday home tailor-made for families looking to soak up the delights of the region while keeping their children entertained and safe.

That couple were my parents, and I took on their beloved Beauclerc. I am a working mum of two boys, and when I first took them out to the house, I took everything but the kitchen sink! I had a thought, what if I could provide everything a family would need, plus the sink, to make their holiday experience, more relaxed, easier to pack for and something to look forward to, rather than the panic of forgetting something!

What do they love about it?

We experienced this escape first hand, and it became our goal to preserve it so we set about creating a small portfolio of select holiday homes, across the Lot and Dordogne regions, so that many more families can enjoy places that we find special, and create memories for their families too. We hope you’ll agree that our knowledge of the area, the culture and local life, coupled with our first-hand experience of the needs of a young family on holiday is the perfect recipe for your next family adventure.

What do the kids love about it?

Having seen my boys enjoy the outdoors, the chateau's, the swimming pool and all the activities the area can provide, I knew that children of all ages would have the best time and create amazing childhood memories!
