BFB's Overview

Enjoying a tranquil small farm location yet just a mile or so from the beautiful beaches and excellent bistros in popular Bude, this quartet of pretty former farm outbuildings have been transformed into four luxurious escapes, ideal for small families.

Aptly named after shells, Abalone and Periwinkle Cottages have one bedroom a piece, whilst Cameo and Oyster have two. Interiors in all four are high spec with luxurious underfloor heating, Philippe Starcke showers, plasma TVs and DVD players, plus well equipped contemporary kitchens, with dishwashers and microwaves (washer-dryers can be found in the adjacent communal laundry room). Most rooms are flooded with light thanks to their high vaulted ceilings and light, bright decor. Their airy open-plan design is ideal for those with crawlers or toddlers in tow as they can roam freely but always within sight. Beds are indulgent with electrical position adjustment and, although there are no tubs, baby baths ensure shower-shy little ones are just as happy in the luxuriously fitted bathrooms as their parents - especially when transfixed by the in room TV.

Outside there are plenty of four-legged friends to wander around and see. There's a large central lawn on which little ones can burn off energy and a brilliant wooden play tower (not suited to under 3s) in a separate play garden. Mums and Dads will appreciate the farm shop which stocks fresh produce reared or grown on the farm including delicious sausages, bacon, eggs and tomatoes - all you need for a hearty breakfast!

The combination of their convenient location, just back from North Cornwall's Atlantic Highway, and within a mile or two of Bude, plus their practical yet luxurious design, long list of useful nursery items (see list in grey box) and on-site attractions for mini-guests, Atlantic Cottages is the perfect coastal chic escape for pre-school families.

Accommodation Overview - Periwinkle
Periwinkle cottage comprises a double bedroom with deluxe ensuite shower room and an open plan living area which opens out onto the main communal garden with easy access to the decked area and barbecue. The kitchen is beautifully crafted out of oak with slate work-tops and fully fitted with hob, oven and dishwasher. There is a plasma television in the main area and a dining table for four. The bedroom is fitted with electric beds and has an LCD HD ready television, whilst the ensuite has a luxury shower, complete with drench shower and body wash. Wireless internet available but can be patchy in high season due to demand.

Location Information

From its setting just off the Atlantic Highway, the cottages are only a 20 minute walk by farm track to the village of Stratton with its friendly pub serving good food, especially the Sunday lunch. The bustling beach town of Bude with its many great beaches, bistros and bars is just a few minutes drive or a 40minute walk away. Crooklets and Summerleaze beaches are ideal for young families thanks to their gentle slopes, golden sand and rock pooling opportunities. Both are patrolled by lifeguards in the main season. Summerleaze is also home to one of Britain's few tidal pools, which fills up with seawater at every high-tide and makes for ideal safe bathing. Bude's also a great spot for eating out. The newly opened Castle Restaurant overlooks the canal and Summerleaze beach and comes highly recommended with its Chef coming from London's Bibendium and using only the finest local ingredients. Kid's feast on smaller portions from the main menu.

In such a lovely part of the country it's a shame to be indoors but if weather dictates it, there's a brilliant indoor ball pool and soft play centre and fun splash pool (both at the Harlequin Centre) within a few minutes drive. A little further afield, Trethorne Leisure Park, Milky Way and Big Sheep are great distractions, each with special zones for babies and toddlers with ball pools, soft play and ride on tractors etc.

For a great night out, don't miss the chance to sample Rick Stein or Jamie Oliver’s restaurants which are within 40 minutes by car/taxi. Be sure to request a sea view table at Oliver's Fifteen and enjoy the breathtaking beach sunset view over aperitifs. Closer to home, the aforementioned Castle Restaurant, ‘Life's a Beach’ and the ‘Elements’ bistro at nearby Widemouth are also well worth arranging babysitting for.

Who owns this place?

In 1999 my father had a vision to take a small run down farm just outside Bude and turn it into something fabulous. He wanted a farm that you could walk around in your slippers and for everything around him to be immaculate, he wanted the best lamb and pork in the area and to have the tastiest eggs, he wanted to have fabulous accommodation and for his guests to feel truly welcome. This was no small task and it was another 8 years before he welcomed his first guests. The farm had been transformed, five barns had been converted into Gold Award winning 4 star accommodation, our Tamworth pigs and Jacob Sheep were doing their jobs(!) and that dream about the slippers?... It is still a farm after all but were are nearly there!

What do they love about it?

Our guests love it here and now in our eleventh year they are returning time and time again. The best compliment that we frequently get is that we are child friendly in the true sense of the words.

What do the kids love about it?

Children will love it here. The grounds are beautifully laid out with gravelled paths around the farm leading to our animals. Pass the time of day with Connie, the Kune Kune pig or take Noddy the donkey an apple, check out the geese, chickens, Jacobs sheep and Pygmy goats. If you follow the path to the top field there are breathtaking views to the cliffs and the sea.

Around the cottages Tess, the dog, is always looking for someone to play football with and our cats can be found sleeping the days away in the sun.

  • Whilst overall we were happy with the accommodation, there were a couple of disappointing areas: The bed is described as a king size but bit is actual two singles together with single mattresses. As well as this, the mattresses were VERY soft and gave us bad backs. The grounds were very scruffy. I know it was mid September and out of season, but there was a lot of weeds and areas being reworked with some large scale landscaping work. The cottage didn't come with any bin bags, hand soap or washing up liquid. We would expect for such basics to be provided. The refrigerator made a lot of noise as did the oven when being used and since the kitchen/driving room was pretty small, it made relaxing in the lounge difficult There was no steriliser provided.Review dated 24/09/2013

  • Nice property but much smaller than expected! Essentially just 2 rooms - lounge with kitchen area and dining table and 1 double bedroom with an ensuite shower room. The only pets we saw were two cats, no pig or other animals as per advert on BFB (except in field). In short, a nice holiday but not all that we had expected. There is also no wifi in the house - we had to ask for a password 4 days after we arrived and even then barely had a signal or connection.Review dated 22/09/2013

  • The cottage was lovely and would have been perfect for two adults alone. However, we were disappointed with the standards of the baby equipment provided. The staff couldn't fit a wooden cot through the bedroom door so we were given a travel cot with a thin and uncomfortable mattress. As the bathroom was en suite it was a problem to use it without waking the baby when she was asleep in the bedroom (there was no other place for the cot). The highchair had no tray and no straps to secure the baby. On the BFB website it said we would be given a bag of toys but we were only given one large musical toy.Review dated 13/08/2013

  • Our visit with our 2 year old was in mid june, in the one bedroom cottage was a small it was sufficient and nicely decorated. The other features such as animal feeding , onsite bistro and farm shop were not in operation perhaps due to being early in the season. Our daughter really enjoyed the freedom of the site and the lack of bath was not problem as she loved the baby bath. Disappointing I wouldn't say the inside of the property was particularly child friendly. Hard floors, only 4 toys supplied when requested and nothing such as bowls, plastic cups, cutlery were available in the kitchens and her cot mattress was soft, with no bumper or bedding so she banged against the cot at night. There was a high chair and baby bath which were excellent quality. Our beds were two small singles pushed together and although they looked expensive and had electronic control, I would have liked a double. Moving mattresses and a toddler banging around in ...Review dated 16/06/2013

  • My family and I stayed at Atlantic Cottages, near Bude this Easter - we had a fantastic time. We stayed in Oyster Cottage which was very well equipped, immaculatly clean and even roomier than we expected! The farm itself was a real hit with our 4 year old son. We were made to feel really welcome by Verity and her family and he loved feeding the new lambs. We would highly recommend Atlantic cottages to anyone looking to take a family break in North Cornwall. We never normally go on holiday to the same place twice but Atlantic Cottages and its location had everything we look for in a holiday so I'm sure we'll be back.Review dated 03/11/2009

  • Just wanted to say a big thank you. We recently stayed in Atlantic Cottages in Bude which we booked through your site. Every detail had been thought about and the owners were really really helpful and friendly. They made sure our children got to see, touch and feed all of the animals which was great. The accocomdation was to a very high standard so as well as the children having a lovely holiday, we felt spoilt too. Thanks so much, we will use your site again.Review dated 03/11/2009

  • Only comments to vendor were the absence of any garden furniture for the patio / terrace and we questioned the suitability of the glass dining table in the kitchen, given the material in question, sharp corners and risk to small children running around. Otherwise, superb! We've booked next year already.Review dated 03/11/2009

We did enjoy our stay but small simple things could have vastly improved our stay.
