BFB's Overview

As the well-kept secrets about Puglia start to get out, BFB is delighted to offer two smart apartments within one large villa on a working olive oil farm, just a ‘toddlerable’ 20 minutes from Brindisi airport. Abbasciu is the luxurious, larger apartment of the two, on the ground floor, with 4/5 bedrooms; and 2-bedroom Piccinnu is on the first floor, with a fab terrace living room overlooking the garden and olive groves. Both have been beautifully finished in the authentic Puglian style, using antique and handcrafted furnishings but also having a funky and arty vibe, with designer finishing touches. The apartments can be booked separately or both together for up to 15 family and friends plus babies in cots. [July and August only exclusive bookings taken]

The farm has been in the owner, Alessandro’s family for five generations, producing Golden Nectar Extra Virgin Olive Oil from the ancient olive groves that surround the villa. In 2006, Alessandro took over the reigns and with his Swiss wife Alexandra, and two children, they set about making the farm sustainable for the future through cultivating a really child friendly approach to the apartments and the whole experience for families.
From toddlers on ride-ons to kids on go-karts, or even a classic Chopper, children of all ages can free range around the grounds, finding plenty of places to play and work up an appetite for wood fired pizzas and BBQ’s. In the playground, with swings, slide and a roundabout, kids can bounce off energy on a big trampoline or get imaginative in a mud kitchen, while, right by the villa, there’s also table tennis and table football. A shady lawn with a football net is perfect for a kick-about or playing with bats and balls, plus, if anyone’s for tennis, there’s a proper court with a changing room, showers and floodlights for evening matches when it’s cooler. The shady pine garden is especially pleasant for a picnic and, throughout the year, there’s usually something to harvest, including tomatoes, figs, plums, mandarins and oranges. For playing indoors, the apartments include kids DVD’s, books and toys including Playmoibil, drawing kits and a Brio Train, plus an X-Box One in Abbasciu.

One family described their holiday like having all the best bits of a lovely campsite all to themselves (with the bonus of being in an apartment!) and that includes an 11x6, swimming pool with a separate toddler section only 70cm deep. Inflatables and pool toys are provided as well as a pop-up paddling pool for babies and designer poolside loungers for grown-ups to chill out, soaking up the sun.

Accommodation Overview

Abbasciu is a luxurious 180sqm ground floor apartment with 4/5 bedrooms that’s big enough for two or even three families, comfortably sleeping 10 plus babies in cots. The spacious living and dining room, with original vaulted ceiling, is open plan, with vintage sofas and armchairs by the fireplace at one end and an antique dining table at the other. This leads through to the designer dining kitchen with all the latest appliances and essentials, including a Nespresso machine, juicer and artisan crockery. A washing machine and tumble dryer are in a separate utility room, along with an additional American-style fridge freezer with an ice dispenser. Two master bedrooms have double beds and modern retro furniture; the red bedroom 3 has a queen sized bed and sofa bed; blue bedroom 4 is designed as a children’s room, with up to 3 single beds; and a studio room has a sofa bed. The apartment has a large modern bathroom and a large shower room, with double washbasins, WC and bidet. The apartment opens onto a covered veranda with handcrafted wooden furniture for kicking back with the Prosecco and this steps down to a sun dappled paved piazza with a wood fired pizza oven, designer garden seating and an exclusive dining area, shaded by overhanging foliage and with gazebo panels if required.

Location Information

The ‘Diddys Country’ apartments of Abbasciu and Piccinnu make the ideal base for discovering the delights of Puglia, surrounded by the owners olive groves and only 20 minutes from sandy beaches and Brindisi airport. The villa is just 1 mile from the local shops, cafes and artistic quarter in San Vito dei Normanni where the owners especially rave about the mozzarella and fresh pasta makers, Caseificio Lanzilotti and Al Matterello, as well as a lush Gelateria.
Besides its reputation for fantastic Italian food, Puglia is renowned for its quirky ‘trulli’ buildings scattered across the countryside and the closest to the villa are only a couple of kilometres away. The villa is also right on a lovely cycle track that goes all the way to Brindisi so borrowing the bikes available from the villa is a great way to explore. The tourist capital of ‘Trulliland’ is Alberobello, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it has hundreds of these buildings, many of which have been turned into arty shops and galleries, cafes and restaurants.

Other traditional and historic towns and villages to visit nearby include Cisternino and Martina Franca, the ‘White City of Ostuni, the foody centre of Ceglie Messapica and the architecturally ornate university town of Lecce. Kids however might prefer a day at the Zoo Safari in Fasano or a new waterpark in Egniazia or the dinosaur trail at Curtispatrizilandia.
For days on the beach, families have lovely spots to choose from on both the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, with the closest only 15-20 minutes’ drive from the villa, including Torre Guacato, Specchiolla and Torre Santa Sabina. The beaches are a mix of sandy bays with shallow, sheltered sea for paddling and rockier coves which are brill for snorkelling in the crystal clear waters. In the traditional fishing villages, fish and seafood specialities are always on the menu as well as homemade pizzas and pasta for the children. It’s also worth a trip right to the tip of the heel of Italy, where Santa Maria di Leuca feels almost like being in the Caribbean!

Nearest medical services: GP San Vito Dei Normanni, 1 mile; A&E Brindisi, 20 mins.
Getting here: Brindisi is the closest airport to the villa, only 20 kms away and Bari is also just under an hour’s drive (65 kms).

Who owns this place?

Hello, we are Alexandra and Alessandro, Alessandro is from Brindisi in Puglia and this property used to be in his mother's family for a few generations. The family had an olive oil press and also used to grow wine. They have harvested our olive trees for as long as we can think back. Alessandro spent all his summers there as a child and teenager always out in the scorching sun with his friends, exploring the countryside, playing with whatever they could find, making tools, hitting targets, eating fruits warmed by the sun. Every day they would drive to the beach, bringing oven dishes to the local bakers to be cooked in the wood fired ovens and picking them up at 1pm for lunch, he can still recall the torture of smelling the delicious food after a morning at the beach and having to wait for everybody to sit at the table before devouring everything. After a big lunch, everybody retired for the "siesta" except for all the kids. Afternoons were spent with playing outdoors, while adults were going doing erants and cooking yet more delicious food. After the long summer, the family would move back to Brindisi in time for the start of school, but they would still come back for weekends until the weather would get cooler.
Alessandro moved to London back in 1997 where he eventually met Alexandra and they set up their family in England. Alessandro bought the property from his parents and siblings back in 2006 and the family has spent some long summers with the young kids and Alessandro's parents, keeping up the tradition of going to the beach in the mornings. Since 2016, after Alessandro's parents became too old to look after the property, we decided to embark on a new journey and rent the house to guests. We have had much fun and have met an array of local craftspeople during the project and are bringing our love for Puglia into everything we do.

Lara, Alexandra, Alessandro & Raffaele

What do they love about it?

Alessandro loves this land because he grew up spending a lot of time there building wonderful memories with his parents, siblings and friends. Alexandra loved it the moment she arrived for the first time, having spent a holiday in Puglia herself at the age of 10 and remembering the beauty of this region. Together they have visited many places there, tasted wonderful food and met amazing people. From Diddy's Country you can visit many beautiful towns, our favourites are Ostuni for it's breathtaking beauty, it's refined restaurants and bars and proximity to San Vito dei Normanni. The market on a Saturday is amazing, really good value and you can find some treasures. Majestic Lecce with it's lime stone buildings and great churches, elegant Martina Franca for more sightseeing, good food and great shopping for all ages, historic Otranto with it's stupendous basilica, exotic Gallipoli with it's beautiful harbour, secret Cisternino with it's winding streets and local butchers turned restaurants, unique Alberobello with it's UNESCO protected historic town centre, and many more. Locals would choose which side of the heel they will go to the beach on any given day depending on the wind conditions, we would recommend you try it also, there are some exciting beaches on both sides, but one of the most beautiful and protected one is just at our doorstep, Torre Guaceto. At the property you will love the peaceful countryside relaxation, the beauty of the vibrant colours and the lovely evenings by the pool. We want to transfer our love for this place to you.

What do the kids love about it?

It's a paradise for kids, there is everything you can imagine and more for kids of any age. You will not need to entertain them, there is a playground with a mud kitchen, huge trampoline, gym bars and other equipment (at your own risk). There is a little wooden hut with toys for an array of ages inside. We provide a number of ride-ons for all ages as well, from 1 1/2 years to adult and a few bicycles for you to use (we have some helmets). The pool boasts a toddler pool attached to the main pool which means it does not get too warm compared to the main pool. The tennis court has a basket ball net and you can also borrow kids rackets.
Explore the nature, there are many trees and other plants to discover, geccos to chase, birds and bats to see. Our cat might visit, but she is shy and might not want to come too close. We also have a little fountain with fish in the pine gardens.
You can also get your kids to carefully collect fruits and vegetables if you like.
They will not want to leave the property!
