Remember those chic country retreats you used to go to before your little darling(s) arrived? All, huge V-Spring beds, fluffy bathrobes, luxury toiletries and spas? Believe it or not, there are places just like that out there that are not only stylish and indulgent, but also boast crèches and a seemingly effortless, never forced, feeling of family-friendliness. These little pieces of heaven for parents and their off spring are a collection of five country house escapes from Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Cornwall, to Dorset and Suffolk. Each hotel has its own personality and unique vibe but all are an inspired mix of the contemporary and the historic.

At  23-bedrooms, The Elms is relatively small in stature but big on facilities boasting an elegant dining room, a chic family friendly bistro, a cosy bar and terrace, plus a brand new state-of-the-art spa with indoor pool and in/out hot tub, plus several treatment rooms. There's nightly kids supper time and a choice of baby listening or babysitting so parents can enjoy relaxing evenings together. The bedrooms and suites are all spacious with plenty of room for cots and child beds, some are interconnecting and many have grand feature bathrooms with free-standing tubs and monsoon showers. Outside, there are acres of pretty gardens to explore, a cleverly camouflaged kids play area, spaces for family croquet and, on certain dates gardening and cookery demonstrations for adults and junior guests hosted by the very charismatic and friendly staff, who give the place its special laid back, house party feeling. Our best tip though, the food is truly excellent but, as tempting as it is to fill up on starters and main courses, be sure to save some room for the winner of 'Best British Cheese Board'. Cheese fans will be raving about it for weeks after!

Cadbury World and West Midlands Safari Park are very close by. Shopaholics will find themselves drawn to Birmingham's fabulous new Mailbox Shopping centre. However, most families find little ones unwilling to leave the play areas at the hotel and parents, more than a little attached to the spa!

Head Chef, Daren Bale, is passionate about food and has won many accolades, including 2 AA Rosettes and Best British Cheeseboard
