For those eager for a break from urban life, an escape to the country couldn't come in a more perfect package. St Cuthberts (sleeps 10) comes with a handsome Victorian exterior, wonderfully scenic location and high quality interior filled with evidence of the owner's experience both as a mum and luxury travel PR. From the newly refurbished granite topped kitchen, to the marble lined bathroom, the Egyptian cotton bed linen, and the comprehensive list of baby and toddler gear, it is clear the place has been put together by someone with an eye for the little things that make a luxury rental really special, especially for parents.
The beautifully renovated Victorian farmhouse enjoys far-reaching views over its 600-acre setting with little but rolling meadow and salmon-stocked riverbank as far as the eye can see. Despite its wonderfully rural setting, St Cuthberts is just a few miles from the glorious Northumberland Coast National Park and the market town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed, with the cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle both within easy reach, especially by train from Berwick. Whilst it is tempting not to venture far from the house thanks to its exceptional comfort, the owners have put together a really excellent guide to things to do and places to see, including a section filled with ideas for entertaining little ones, so there need never be a dull moment.
The optional additional services of a Cordon Bleu trained chef who is happy to simply deliver the odd home-made ready meal, to cooking up a delicious dinner party or even providing service for a fully catered stay, ensures grown-ups are as well looked after a little ones. The little ones will find the house equipped with everything from bouncers and baby baths to trikes and toy boxes - there's even a stroller - allowing parents of toddlers to pack really light. There's also a climbing frame and swing set in the gardens, in sight of the elegant teak outdoor dining set and gas BBQ - all the ingredients for long lazy summer evenings!
Interiors at St Cuthberts strike the perfect balance between elegant and homely. With five bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms, it is easily large enough for several families holidaying together and the large lounge with seating for 10 around an open log fire (safety guard available), flat screen TV, DVD player and IPod dock, makes a relaxing spot. There's also a formal dining room, again with a cosy fireplace and seating for 10, plus a sociable kitchen table for laid back dining or putting the world to rights over bottles of wine in the evening. The kitchen itself is exceptionally well-equipped with traditional shaker style units, granite work surfaces, a large American style fridge / freezer, dishwasher, range cooker (gas), microwave, blender and CD / radio system.
Upstairs there are five thoughtfully decorated bedrooms, painted in calming, neutral tones and complete with plenty of storage space in the form of a wardrobe and chest of drawers in each. There are three doubles and two twins/doubles (as required) each laid with luxurious Egyptian cotton linens, goose down pillows and duvets, plus a CD/Radio sound system. Four of the bedrooms boast ensuite bathrooms, some with speakers linked up with the sound systems in their adjoining bedrooms, all with beautiful marble surfaces and natural stone tiles. There's also a large family bathroom. All together there are three stand-alone showers and three spacious bath tubs, plus an ergonomic bath seat for mini guests.

Guests are spoilt for choice for things to do when staying at St Cuthberts. Whether it's enjoying the swings and slide in the large garden, pottering around the six hundred acres of farmland, exploring the banks of the River Tweed or making a trip into the charming historic town of Coldstream, it would be tempting not to stray far from the house. However, St Cuthberts' location just 10 miles inland from Berwick –Upon-Tweed and slap bang in the middle of Newcastle and Edinburgh means that there is a huge amount of activities both indoor and outdoor to amuse all ages.
From bucket and spading on the dramatic beaches between Berwick and Bamburgh, to taking a boat trip to the Farne Islands to spot puffins and seals, to learning about beekeeping, to playing knights of the templar at one of the five castles (Alnwick, Bamburgh, Floors, Lindesfarne and Manderston) under an hour's drive away, to riding the 15” mini steam railway at Heatherslaw, to losing yourselves in a maize maze, enjoying a treasure hunt around the border town of Berwick, to riding bikes or horses, trying your luck at a spot of archery or quad-biking, there really is something to entertain even the most demanding of guests. There are also great shopping opportunities for the parents with many fabulous priced cashmere shops to visit in nearby Kelso and Hawick.
On a more practical note, just down the road in Coldstream are lots of independent shops from which to buy local produce (both meat and seafood are superb in this part of the world), or else just outside Berwick are Morrisons and an M&S Foodhall, all of which make self-catering a great option!
