Cool and stylish is not a phrase that normally slips off the tongue when describing an average self-catering UK holiday resort. But it's a perfect way of summing up Retallack, where boutique-hotel standard interiors and five-star luxury fuses effortlessly with fun-packed on-site family activities - without the slightest hint of "Hi-Di-Hi".
The resort has a brilliant range of beautifully-designed contemporary houses, ranging from the Polzeath that caters for 16 people to the Rock that's perfect for 4. All are dotted around lakes and landscaped countryside, close to the fashionable part of the North Cornwall coast that includes Rock and Padstow.
Inside, each house has a fresh boutique hotel feel, with oak floors, granite marble work surfaces, crisp cotton sheets and a kitchen with a state-of-the art hob and oven, dishwasher, washer/dryer and microwave. You get your own deck and BBQ – and satellite TV and internet access too. There's need to worry about filling the car boot with baby gear either, as cots, highchairs, bath mats, stairgates, bed guards, socket covers, plastic crockery, plastic cutlery and sippy cups can all be provided free of charge for guests booking via Baby-Friendly Boltholes guests.
Junior guests will think they have been transported to holiday heaven, no matter what their age. The Kids Academy provides everything from Monkey Music for babies and toddlers, to Bushtucker Trials and Tennis Academy for 4 – 12 year olds, complete with qualified supervisors to put your mind at rest. There's outdoor play areas for all ages too with an adventure playground featuring an aerial slide, pirate ship, desert island climbing frame and swings. The 'Loop Academy' teenage clud will scoop up any over-13s and take them surfing, skating, coasteering and teach them photography and digital editing on the latest Apple Macs. Plus, Retallack's secret weapon for amusing the most determinedly-attitudinal teen, and a good few parents, is the Flowrider, an amazing ride that generates a 3-inch deep stationary wave that you can surf, bodyboard or even skateboard on.
It is parent heaven too with a funky bar and brasserie, heated indoor swimming pool, gym, golf course, tennis courts and a spa that offers every kind of stress-busting treatment and massage that a you could wish for. Childcare and babysitting can be booked for any time of the day to allow you to take full advantage of all the resort's pampering goodies – or even to pop out for lunch or dinner at one of Rick Stein or Jamie Oliver's nearby restaurants. If you want some advice on where's best to eat – or even with booking tables - give the resort's concierge service a ring and they promise to sort everything out for you.
The Rock (2 bedrooms & 1 bath/shower rooms)
The two-bedroom Rock is ideal for a small family or two couples with babies sharing. It has its own landscaped gardens with enclosed decked areas both front and back. The entrance hall leads to an oak floored living area which is flooded with light from its double glazed sliding doors, which open onto a spacious, lit deck. the large living room has big comfy sofas and space to spread out and chat as the kids play nearby. There's satellite TV, DVD player, telephone and broadband plus a large and well-equipped kitchen with all mod cons including full size oven and hob, fridge freezer and dishwasher. Plus a separate utility room with washer-dryer. Upstairs, the rich cream carpets feel luxurious underfoot whilst the huge super-king (can be unzipped into twins on request) beds with Egyptian Cotton linens give an equally indulgent feel and can be pretty tough to get out of especially given the views they enjoy. The bathroom is set between the two bedrooms na dboasts both a bath and shower unit. Garden dining furniture and BBQ provided.
The kitchen, full of contemporary marble and steel surfaces is equipped with a fridge freezer, wash dryer, dishwasher, microwave and oversized gas hob, and you and the children will be amply entertained with a flat screen TV with DVD player and IPod docking system.
Retallack is set on Cornwall's scenic and ravishingly beautiful north coast, spiritual home to surf dudes and beach lovers everywhere. But to be honest, your first challenge will be actually leaving the resort.
You and the kids will probably want to explore the surrounding 100 acres of lovely woodland and countryside, packed with bird and animal life and with a specially-built nature trail, before you even think about going further abroad.
Once you do, however, time in the car will seem well spent. Springfield Pony Centre and Newquay with its world-famous sands, zoo and aquarium – as well as some great bars and restaurants - are only ten minutes drive away.
It's the same distance to pretty Padstow, where you can visit Rick Stein's Seafood restaurant and cookery school or sit on the harbour wall with the children and a perfectly-battered cod for company, bought piping-hot nearby from the TV chef's critically-acclaimed Fish & Chip shop.
Further afield, past some of the most glorious beaches in the the world, through countryside dotted with renowned golf courses, you have Jamie Oliver's seaside eaterie at Watergate Bay, as well as the Eden Project.

An excellent resort with great facilities for families. Our 2 bed lodge was very cosy and comfortable and had everything we needed. We didn't have a baby with us, but the lodge had everything for a stay with a young child - high chair,baby bath etc. even a step which was handy for our 3 year old. The houses were nestled in a beautiful Cornish valley with far-reaching views. This is a perfect location for all the attractions of both Cornish coasts with dozens of great beached nearby. In fact, the only reason it lost 1 star for location was because it wasn't right on the coast. Would definitely return with our family.
