There are apartments on the Algarve and then there's this apartment at Sheraton's 5* Pine Cliffs Resort – Portugal's leading family resort in 2010 and 2011. The exclusive setting, luxury resort facilities and baby-friendly apartment all add up to a superb spot for easy, stress-free holidays to one of the warmest corners of the Med. Pine Cliffs Resort has a prime position overlooking the soft sands and glittering sea of the Golden Flag Falesia Beach at Olhos de Aqua near Albufeira. The beach is just a short walk from the apartment and down a Roald Dahl-esque 'Great Glass Elevator', although lazy days, simply enjoying the resort, is effortlessly appealing too. Step out of the door to stroll through lush, landscaped grounds and fragrant pines to lounge in sun or shade by a choice of pools, including several which are suitable for toddlers, one of which is right by the family friendly Corda Cafe. There's a heated outdoor pool and an indoor pool for the winter months, plus swimming lessons are also available. There's another pool at the Porto Pirata children's village along with fantastic pirate ships for budding Jack Sparrow's, mini golf and children's clubs. For parents weighted down with baby kit and caboodle for the day, the Pine Trees Train is a godsend which youngsters love to hop onboard and there's a stop right outside the apartment for either the beach elevator or pools. Other leisure and pleasure amenities include a games room, golfing greens, tennis, gym, sauna and ‘Ritual Spa'. The apartment is on the second floor and has one large double bedroom which leads onto the balcony. There is a comfy double sofa bed in the lounge so the apartment can sleep up to 4, plus a baby in a cot. Besides Corda Cafe, Piri Piri is a family friendly Portuguese restaurant, with a choice of indoor or al fresco seating on a big terrace, complete with a play area and garden. There are actually nine restaurants onsite and a couple of other grown up gastro delights include a super swish sushi restaurant and grill. Staying in an apartment however, eating in is usually the easiest and the Pine Cliffs Deli and mini market are within handy walking distance.

The mild year round climate and sunshine, along with the fabulous beaches easily explains why the Algarve is such a hit with families but flights from London are also under two and a half hours – about as long as many toddler-frazzled parents can cope with!
There's hardly any reason to venture from The Pine Cliffs Resort and Praia Falesia but the Algarve's leading resort town of Albufeira is just 15 minutes on the bus which stops 50 metres from the apartment. The bus also stops at the fishing village of Olhos d'Agua, with its beach and shops. A stroll along the beach leads to the smart marina resort of Vilamoura where there are yet more shops, bars and restaurants.
For those who do fancy exploring the Algarve a little further, Alte is a traditional village just half an hour away, Silves is renowned for its Moorish castle, Portimao is a bustling fisherman's town and Faro has numerous monuments in the medieval walled centre. Other fun family things to do include the thrills and spills of waterparks, swimming with dolphins at Zoomarine or maybe seeing them swimming wild on a dolphin spotting cruise along the gorgeous coastline of sea grottoes, coves and golden beaches.
Getting There: Pine Cliffs is just 25 minutes from Faro airport,
so hopping in a taxi is easy and hiring a car isn't essential. Faro Airport is serviced by low cost flights from most UK airports and is approx 2.5hrs from the international airport at Lisbon. To review prices from a variety of airlines or dates, see www.skyscanner.net
