Normandy is a little piece of heaven for parents. It has all the best bits of France - long, golden sands, gorgeous, uncrowded countryside and pretty historic market towns, full of traditional patisseries and cafes. But without the long journey with disgruntled children that's necessary for points further south.
This 5-bedroom Maison Maitre at Les Gites Champetres benefits from the same fabulous setting as its two neighbouring 4-bedroom gites (click similar accommodation button below to view) but additional privacy in the form of its own grand sweeping drive and enclosed gardens, all in the heart of the Parc Naturel des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin and on the edge of the pretty, sleepy village of Sainteny.
Less than an hour's drive from Cherbourg and the smart shops and restaurants of Caen, it is only 30 minutes by car from beautiful beaches that formed a backdrop to the Allied landings of World War II but which are now more famous as the scene of many an English youngster's idyllic bucket and spade adventure.
Like the cottages, the impressive Maison Maitre comes with a plentiful supply of books and games for children of all ages, and access to the same outdoor gear including buckets, spades, swings, slides, sand pits, paddling pools and trampolines.
Owners, Ian and Helen fell in love with the area and moved there in March 2007 with their three young sons. Although they now live off site, their keen interest in wanting their guests to share their passion for Northern France and great eye for what makes a relaxing holiday with little ones in tow is still evident in all the child-related extras – a travel cot, bedguards, stairgates, highchairs, baby monitor, baby changing mats and 2 McClaren buggies with hoods and raincovers – and the way in which the whole place has been made safe for junior guests by thoughtfully-sited fences, hedges and gates. Parents even get the rare chance a grown-up night out, as baby-sitting is available on request.

Dripping with history and natural beauty, Normandy can offer you and your family many joys, a lot of them only a short walk away. A five minute stroll takes you into the centre of the village of Sainteny, rich with all the things about France that we love. The pretty church of St Pierre watches over an old-style bar and tabac and a boulangerie/patisserie and boucherie/charcuterie where the locals stop to chat before heading for their morning coffee. There's a nice local restaurant too, nestled next to a doctor's surgery and a village shop with La Poste facilities.
Jump in the car and it's a ten minute drive to the historic town of Carentan. Home away to a charming weekly market, it's dotted with stunning 17th century architecture while still offering the 21st century lure of several supermarkets, banks, a cinema, and a railway station with links to Paris.
Bayeux, home of the famous tapestry depicting William the Conqueror's invasion of England in 1066, bustling Caen with its two magnificent abbeys, and the cultural hub of Cherbourg are just a few of the ancient towns within easy driving distance.
Utah, Gold, Omaha, Sword and Juno beaches are known world-wide as the sites of the D-Day Normandy landings in 1944. But your children will love them simply because they are miles of near-deserted golden sand just 30 minutes from your front door.
You can spend long, sunny days exploring regional nature parks such as Parc Contentin Bessin, take the kids beach or river fishing for your supper, and walk, cycle or horse-ride along a vast, beautiful and well-maintained network of rural paths.
For sport-lovers, the department of La Manche – into which Normandy falls - has 355 km of coastline, giving you plenty of scope for sailing, surfing, canoeing, kayaking, rowing, scuba diving, wind surfing and land yachting. In addition, there are 36 golf courses on offer and a chance to watch top flight football at Ligue 1 team FC Caen. Adrenalin junkies can try their hand at karting, parachuting, bungee-jumping and paintballing. And if it's just a good old-fashioned swim you all fancy, the Centre Aquatique du Pays Saint-Lois at St Lo is only 25 minutes drive away with a competition pool, a warm, shallow pool for very young ones, and a leisure pool with a slide.
Getting There: Less than an hour from the Ferry Ports at Caen and Cherbourg.
