When Ian and Sara made Le Chevrefeuille their home and their life, the mission was to create just the sort of place they would love to find for their own family holidays. Having a 3-year old girl and 10-year old boy provides a pretty good starting point and the accommodation, facilities, family-friendly but excellent cuisine and helpful services on offer, shows the couple really understand what makes all the difference to parents and to children.

Located in the heart of the Dordogne, the charming ‘Perigordine' farmstead of Le Chevrefeuille now comprises two self catering gîtes and five ensuite chambre d'hôte rooms around an inner courtyard and surrounded by extensive, grassy gardens. The style of the accommodation is a blend of medieval charm and modern comfort, from exposed sandstone walls and golden wood floors to gleaming bathrooms, WiFi throughout, satellite TV and quality baby kit. Whichever accommodation families choose, Ian and Sara have made sure that parents enjoy the perfect balance of quality time with the children, precious time to themselves and fun for all ages.

The sparkling pool is a child friendly focal point, surrounded by a secure fence, with a corner area for babies, full length steps for dipping little toes in the water and no deep end. Mums and dads can keep a watchful eye too, while relaxing on the poolside loungers and gazing on the views across the Valley. Both gîtes also have terraces where parents can watch children playing by the pool, while sampling renowned Perigord delicacies that are a must from the fantastic local markets. In addition to the pool, there's plenty to keep children amused inside and out, including table football, climbing frame, swings, toy room and TV room with a DVD player and Wii. Bikes are also available from toddlers to teens, including an infant seat attachment and children are encouraged to help the owners collect eggs from the farm hens.

Besides keeping everyone amused, Ian and Sara try to take the stress out of meal times. A pre arrival shopping service is available, breakfast is on offer for everyone and throughout the summer months, evening meals are served a few times a week. Parents can treat themselves to a few hours off, with a monitor for babies tucked up in their cot, and older off-spring enjoying the communal play areas within sight of many of the 'bistro' tables. All children love a barbecue, so not only do the gîtes both have one on their terraces, but there's also a communal BBQ for guests to get sizzling on the balmy summers evenings.

The gite has use of all communal facilities including swimming pool, indoor and outdoor kids play areas, laundry room, library with Wi-fi and laptop available and the 'bistro' for breakfasts and pre-booked evening meals, which are a set menu served 2-3 times a week from June - September.

Le Chevrefeuille is situated at Pechboutier in the heart of the Dordogne, known as Perigord Noir. The market village of St Cyprien is only 5km away, the ‘prehistoric capital' of Les Eyzies just 7km and the bustling medieval market town of Sarlat is 17km which means families are in a superb spot for discovering all the best sights and things to do in this beautiful corner of South West France. Throughout the summer months, a fantastic way to really get into the spirit of the region is by joining in the convivial and family friendly atmosphere at one of the many night markets, with great local food, music and dancing.

The local area has many great locations for family days out including Chateau Castelnaud, which is always hit with would-be knights and princesses thanks to the medieval museum and interactive tours lead by professional storytellers. There's more historically themed family fun at nearby Le Bournat Village, which recreates life in the 1900s with pottery. bread and lace making demonstrations, as well as the opportunity for little ones to have photographs in period costumes. The local aquarium is also worth a trip and features more than 6,000 species in 30 different pools.

There's more water-based excitement to be had 10-minutes away at the Etang de Bos Water Park, which is home to a dedicated pool for under 7s with suitable depth, slides and fountains to play in. Or, for a 'beach' day, there's a lovely sand-fringed lake 20 minutes away at Tamnies, which is well set up for families and supervised by lifeguards in the summer months.

Getting There: Both Toulouse and Brive (London City only) Airports are approx. 1 hour's drive away.

We stayed for a week at Le Chevrefeuille in early May 2012 and had a wonderful week. We have two very small children - a one year old boy and a two year old girl - so staying anywhere apart from home can be stressful. It was the most relaxing time we have had as a family. The gite is equipped with everything you need for a young family. Anything that wasn't there on our arrival, we just had to ask our delightful hosts, Sarah and Ian, and they were only too happy to help out. There is a big back garden/field at the back of the gites with children's swings and a climbing frame, so you can easily keep an eye on them whilst they play. It was too cold to use the swimming pool, but it looks gorgeous. Perhaps the best thing about Le Chevrefeuille is that Ian and Sarah run a restaurant which is part of their B&B. We would put the kids to bed and then take the monitor into the restaurant and have a delicious meal whilst the kids slept in their beds. The food (and wine) are utterly delicious. Ian is a very talented chef and Sarah a wonderful hostess. Sarah and Ian have two children of their own, so it was great to see all the children playing together in a beautiful, safe environment. We are planning on returning next summer and we cannot wait!!!
