Le Manoir de Longeveau’s fantastic combination of pretty gîte
accommodation, beautiful setting and brilliant facilities, including a
crèche, golf course, tennis courts and a bar/restaurant, make it a real
find and ideal for families with young children. Within hours of
arriving it’s easy to see why so many fellow guests return year after
year – a particularly tempting proposition when enjoying a relaxing drink
on the bar’s sunny terrace and soaking up the beautiful scenery!
The
16th century former Cognac estate’s elegant yet relaxed and friendly
ambience is helped along by the fact that guests can do as much or as
little as they wish. Little ones can attend the professionally staffed
crèche, which runs from late May until late September, as and when
parents require, and adults can relax by one of the pools, enjoy a round
of golf (9-holes), a drink and a meal on the bar’s terrace, a spot of
boules or a game of tennis, with or without tuition. There are also
acres of open countryside to explore nearby and onsite with an outdoor
play area and paddling pool, for enjoying time with little ones. The
fact that there’s a 40-ft heated outdoor pool, is also a bonus for those
with small babies who may find unheated pools chilly, even in summer.
The
pretty gîtes sleep from two to eight and are nestled in small clusters
scattered amongst the 60 acres of beautiful grounds, either close to the
Manoir itself or a few minutes walk away at the hamlet of Puygironde,
which overlooks Longeveau and the golf course. All have been recently
renovated to a high standard, mainly from old farm buildings and each
has charming original features including old beams, exposed stonework
and timber or clay tile floors. Most have open-plan living areas with
well-equipped kitchens, although there are no dishwashers and laundry
facilities are in a well-equipped communal laundry room. Each has a
private outdoor seating area and BBQs, which are useful for quiet nights
‘at home’, after busy days and when not making the most of the bar’s
terrace for meals and drinks, or communal BBQ nights.
Accommodation Overview
La Loge is situated on a classical French courtyard in front of the Manoir, the
building was once used as the groom’s quarters in days gone by. Nowadays
a spacious ground floor, double aspect lounge opens on to a kitchen and
dining area. A double bedroom, leading off from the lounge, features a
dressing area and en suite shower room / W.C. Upstairs, the split level
double bedroom has an en-suite shower room and W.C., while the two twin
bedrooms share a separate shower room / W.C.
The property is tastefully finished and features many of the original wooden beams and stonework. Double doors from the lounge lead out to a terrace and barbecue area at the front of the cottage, which is shaded by a magnificent lime tree.
Please Note: In order to satisfy local tax laws, Longeveau charges a additional £12 per adult and £5 per child (over 5s only) fee to cover general facilities. Other additional costs include: £10 per bed for linen, £6 per towel, £15 per cot with linen and £30 to hire additional beds, if required and space permitting.
Share Tips & Advice
Longeveau is situated on the border between the Charente and the
Dordogne, relatively close to Bordeaux and the unspoilt beaches of the
Atlantic coast as well as the green Perigord region to the East. The
River Dronne (3kms) provides many opportunities for fishing and
canoeing.
Don’t miss a trip to nearby Aubeterre (5kms), which has a pretty
square crammed with decent bistros and was recently voted one of
France’s prettiest towns. It also has a handy river 'beach' with a
useful cafe. Bordeaux, St. Emilion and Cognac are all within easy reach
and famous for their wines and spirits. Happily, the kiddie-friendly
land train tour around Cognac leaves from outside the Courvoiser
building and matches the tour times, allowing parents to take turns or
draw straws!
There are some very good and well priced restaurants within a few
miles of Longeveau including those in the square at Aubeterre and, for
a very special night, at the Chateau in Chalais. Reliable, English
speaking babysitters can be arranged via the creche at Longeveau.
For shopping and grocery supplies, St Severin is the nearest village
(5 mins by car) and boasts a small range of shops including a
boulangerie, butchers and small supermarket. There are also the markets
in Chalais and RIberac (20mins) and the more sophisticated shopping in
the large and historic towns of Augouleme and Perigeux, both only
around 40 mins away.
The very popular La Palmyra Zoo, Aqualand Waterpark
and Futurescope are all within 1.5 – 2 hrs drive
Getting There: The nearest airports
are Bordeaux or Bergerac (approx 75mins). Whilst Poiters, Limoges and
La Rochelle are around two hours away. St. Malo is the nearest ferry
port at five hours drive.
