This former 18th century traditional Breton Longhouse has been lovingly
converted into three stylish yet characterful cottages sleeping from 4
to 23 and sharing two acres of lawned gardens plus a large heated
outdoor swimming pool with a new telescopic cover, making it a
comfortable temperature year-round whether the roof is on or off.
Run by Susan, a
British mum of two little ones who's been in France for over a decade,
the cluster of cottages are well set up for young families with a host
of useful nursery gear and a handy collection of toys for inside and out
(see grey box below). Those guests who can drag their off spring away
from the heated pool, trampoline and ride-ons provided, find the
cottages conveniently located with several towns and villages within
5minutes drive or 15 minutes cycle (bikes and child seats available) -
ideal for morning boulangerie runs! Plus, the beaches of France's
'Emerald Coast' are all within 45minutes drive.
Les Chouettes (Sleeps 12) is an impressive, spacious, 18th century farmhouse with six bedrooms and three bathrooms. Named after the barn owls which nest every year at La Haute Mancelière, the original farmhouse is a large, comfortable house with exposed beams which sleeps 12 people easily. It is ideal for several families travelling together, since the bedrooms are split over two floors with a downstairs double (king-sized bed), a downstairs twin and bathroom with bath and shower (also separate wc). On the first floor there are two double bedrooms (one with en-suite shower room and both with king-sized beds), a twin bedroom, a bunk bed room and a separate shower-room and WC. The spacious kitchen is equipped with a large fridge freezer, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave, along with the usual equipment i.e. hob, oven, kettle, toaster etc. The lounge has TV (English and French) with Freeview (Cbeebies), DVD, VCR and WiFi internet access. Outside there is a large private terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue, overlooking the pretty garden. The cottage has a woodburning stove in the salon and solid fuel central heating, making it a cosy retreat in any weather.
The cottages at La Haute Mancelière are just 45 minutes drive from the long sandy beaches of the Emerald coast between St Malo and Cancale, which, along with the buckets and spades provided make for a great family day out. St Malo's medieval walled city is crammed with lovely boutiques and bistros, whilst its Grand Aquarium makes a great wet weather retreat for Finding Nemo fans!
Wannabe princesses or brave knights will love Fougères, only 15kms away, which boasts the largest medieval castle in Europe.
Closer to home the surrounding countryside offers many lovely walks and cycle rides, many through established forests which characterize the countryside of the Fougères region. Bikes for both adults and children can be provided should you fancy a family excursion. However its not just about the kids, there are at least 4 golf couses within a 45 minute drive of the property for golf enthusiasts and a fishing lake close by for anyone wishing to catch fresh trout for the barbecue!
The nearest village Tremblay (4kms away) is both beautiful and useful with its 11th century church and a range of shops, bars and restaurants. St Brice-en-Cogles, a slightly larger village, the same distance away and has a handy supermarket.
For eating out, there's an excellent 'Ferme Auberge' restaurant 5kms away, which is super child friendly, very relaxed with excellent, good value, food and lots of animals to see in between courses.
The forest of Villecartier (a 10 minute drive) which as well as offering many different walks has electronic boats and pony rides. If all that isn't enough there is a wonderful zoo nearby which is perfect for budding animal lovers.
