There can be few homes in Britain that can rival Hafod Cae Maen for its fabulous setting. Backed by the brooding hills of Snowdonia, with the charming Italianate village of Portmeirion, made famous by cult 60s series The Prisoner, below and coastline beyond. Offspring-permitting, it's possible to sit for hours in the gardens or master bedroom's balcony simply absorbing the inspiring views. Plus, in Summer, guests can enjoy exclusive access to the Portmerion estate's stunning outdoor pool set above the beach.
The house itself is the perfect combination of style, substance and comfort. The original features are accessorised with striking Banksy prints and high quality furnishings. It is a haven of tranquilly too thanks to its two acres of terraced gardens, much of which planted by the original owner, the botanist responsible for the subtropical woodlands on the Portmeirion estate. He had a handy commute given that the village with its pool, two good restaurants, fabulous ice cream parlour and often deserted beach is just around 10 minutes woodland walk downhill. The beach is stunning and has miles of sandcastle building opportunities plus safe swimming in low-tide and the swimming pool above. With so much on the doorstep, there's very little need to use a car, making a break at Hafod Cae Maen all the more relaxing as a result.
The impressive interior has large Edwardian windows and cream coloured walls ensure it is flooded with light, whilst the polished oak floors and wood-burners in antique fireplaces add a cosy feel in winter. There's no expense spared in terms of modern comforts with indulgent Vi-Spring beds in the bedrooms, IPod docks, plasma TVs, Satellite TV, DVD players, WIFI, a wonderfully well-equipped, local slate-topped, kitchen with range cooker, dishwasher, microwave and a cosy wood burner in its dining area (seats 8 plus 2 highchairs). The owners have thought of everything with an incredibly comprehensive list of baby and toddler gear provided, plus a large range of toys, games, books, DVDs and a pretty wooden playhouse to ensure mini guests are easily entertained. The icing on the cake is the optional housekeeping, meal delivery, chef services, pre-arrival grocery shopping and babysitting.
The house is within walking distance of the two good restaurants and three cafés in Portmeirion village. Portmeirion often deserted beach features safe swimming at low-tide and, ideal for Thomas the Tank fans, the Ffestiniog narrow-gauge steam railway, is just a ten-minute walk from the house. There are also tennis courts and an outdoor pool which can be used by guests of Hafod Cae Maen on request.
A little further afield is the Welsh Mountain Zoo, a caring conservation zoo featuring animals including Sealions, Snow Leopards, Chimpanzees, Red Pandas and Sumatran Tigers.

the interior decoration is tasteful, cosy and welcoming - we couldn't have asked for more. The estra touches provided by Laura were great: delicious marmalade, towels and nappy bags for baby. The boys loved the beach and the ice cream shop! We're hoping to come back next year!

We were immediately struck by the wonderful, welcoming atmosphere in the house. With two small children, everything has been delightful. The house is so thoughtfully well equipped and has loads of space for a family. The views, open fires, magnificent scenery - I am sure all your guests will rave about these. Hafod Cae Maen is the PERFECT retreat for a London family in need of a rest.

What a beautiful house and a great place to spend our very first 'family' holiday. Thanks to Laura for her excellent cooking and babysitting. I am sure we will be back. The area is made for little (and big) boys with steam trains and castles at every turn!

We had a lovely holiday. The house is amazing and has everything you should need for a relaxing time. There is a lot of attention to detail and all the rooms are furnished to a very high standard. A welcome hamper of home made cakes, bread and marmalade was a lovely touch. We highly recommend it.

Owner Profile
Paul spent just about every holiday as a child in and around Portmeirion as his grandparents lived just down the track from Hafod Cae Maen. After his grandparents passed away, Paul volunteered on the Ffestiniog Narrow-gauge railway to keep up his connections with the area, and it was during an evening walk around the outskirts of Portmeirion that he noticed a beautiful house, secluded in the trees. Being brave, Paul knocked on the door and introduced himself to the owner, Kitty and they became good friends. Many years later in 2006, Kitty reluctantly decided that she wanted to move closer to her family in England and offered to sell Hafod Cae Maen to Paul. After 2 years of careful renovation, Hafod Cae Maen is now a perfect retreat for couples craving seclusion and families seeking fun and adventure. Paul and Claire now return to stay at the house as often as possible. |
Hafod Cae Maen is truly secluded with views that still take my breath away. It's a place where you can stay for a week and not even have to use the car! Spend the morning soaking up sunshine in the garden, followed by lunch in Portmeirion, followed by a walk to the beach and return for a BBQ. If you need to pop to the shops, just catch the steam train to Porthmadog. If it's raining, simply pick a novel from the library shelf and curl up in front of a roaring log fire.

There are so many things for children to do! For the adventurous ones, the garden is wonderful to explore with lots of undergrowth, perfect for making dens! On a rainy day, kids just love the playhouse in the corner of the garden. The beach is only a short walk, and the Ffestiniog steam railway, with its brightly coloured engines, lies just over the hill. In the house, there is a TV room with DVD's and a toy-cupboard (the adults have their own room to sit in, so you can make as much noise as you like!)
