Remember those chic country retreats you used to go to before your little darling(s) arrived? All, huge V-Spring beds, Egyptian Cotton sheets, fluffy bathrobes, luxury toiletries and spas? Believe it or not, there are places just like that out there that are not only stylish and indulgent, but also boast crèches and a seemingly effortless, never forced, feeling of family-friendliness. These little pieces of heaven for parents and their off spring are a collection of five country house escapes from Wiltshire, Worcestershire and Cornwall, to Dorset and Suffolk. Each hotel has its own personality and unique vibe but all are an inspired mix of the contemporary and the historic.
36-bedroom Fowey Hall is a homely mansion by the sea, the perfect getaway for a summer family holiday or a short break at any time of year. The emphasis is very much on friendly and relaxed informality in an intimate setting. In the quieter Winter months, curl up by one of the roaring log fires with a selection of the latest magazines or a good book, take a bracing walk along the cliffs and stop in at a local pub for a pint of Cornish scrumpy, and when you are tired and tingling, return to the hotel for a massage in the privacy and comfort of your room if staying before October 2008 or in the new Aquae Sulis Retreat from October onwards. Summer at Fowey is idyllic, a real house party by the sea! Laze around in the garden, play croquet on the lawn, snooze in a hammock, and end the day with a sundowner and a BBQ with fellow guests on the terrace, whilst the little ones enjoy the freedom of the lawn outside.
Fowey Hall was the inspiration behind Toad Hall in 'Wind in the Willows' and sits in a spectacular location overlooking the sailing and fishing port of Fowey on the South Cornish coast, within its original walled gardens and with commanding views of the river estuary and far out to sea. The town and the local sandy cove at Readymoney are both a short walk from the hotel, which is also within easy reach of the many superb attractions in Cornwall including The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Fowey Hall has linked up with Fowey Town Tours offering guests the chance to take in the fantastic sights of Fowey that guests often miss. Hear all about Fowey’s rich and varied history, from Celtic and Medieval times to the present day, with fascinating stories of smuggling and battles. Part way round, the tour stops at the quayside where a boat awaits - guests can choose to either go on a river cruise or to go wildlife watching with Fowey Marine Adventures.
