Past the winding streets and stone houses of pretty Dolgellau in the Snowdonia National Park, Ffynnon Townhouse sits, deliciously imposing, overlooking the town below and with the foothills of Cader Idris behind. As a former rectory its magnificent proportions have been immaculately restored by friendly owners Debra and Steve who've given it a fabulously glamorous mix of old and new, opulent and simple. It is little wonder that it is regarded as one of the UK's top boutique hotels and something of a steal with rooms to rival many a top hotel, but rates about half the price.
Surprisingly, for such a romantic and luxurious retreat, Ffynnon is fabulously parent and well as purse-friendly. Thanks to their experienences with their own young son, the owners provide a warm welcome for little ones with a handful of toys, a little outdoor play area, highchairs, steriliser, kiddie cutlery and crockery, plus cots for under 2s provided free of charge and extra beds available in the large bedrooms for a very reasonable cost. There's a wonderful kids high tea menu plus a handy bulter's pantry with preparation area, fridge and microwave, which is perfect for whipping up baby feeds and toddler nibbles, as well as cheeky late night snacks - Don’t fill up too much, as the breakfast with everything from Eggs Benedict to Glamorgan sausages is another highlight!
Once the little ones are tucked up in bed, parents can take advantage of the baby listening service and enjoy a romantic meal at one the impressive local restaurants that Steve and Debra can reserve, or ensconce themselves on a chaise by the fire in the guest lounge, order some meze from room service and, armed with a choice tipple from the well-stocked honesty bar, remember what a good old fashioned pre-baby weekend away felt like....heavenly!
The luxurious hot tub nestled in the gardens, pre-bookable in-room massages and gourmet picnic packs are simply the icing on the cake.
Room Overview: Myfanwy is an elegant combination of Edwardian features with boutique hotel style and luxury. Guests enter the spacious room through their own private lobby and are greeted by a beautiful king sized brass bed, laid with luxurius Egyptian cotton linens, a large seating area (giving plenty of space for cot or extra bed) and indulgent ensuite bathroom complete with delciusly scented toiletries, an Italian marble floor, power shower and a roll-top bath that is as much of a ht with mini guests as it is with their frazzled parents! To top it all off, the room offers lovely views of the town and magnificent mountains around it.
PLEASE NOTE: There is a two night minimum stay on weekends and three nights on bank holidays.

Ffynnon Townhouse is aptly set down Love Lane on the edge of the pretty town of Dolgellau, at the foot of the magnificent Cader Idris in the southern Snowdonia National Park. Whilst the area is famous as a haven for lovers of the great outdoors and activities like hiking, rock climbing and white water rafting, its worth noting that there are many fine beaches close by too. Locals’ favourites include the quiet and unspoiled Benar Beach and the slightly busier Fairbourne beach, which has a steam railway that is much loved by children.
The town itself is within a short stroll and has some handy shops, good cafes and restaurants. Debra and Steve are fantastic sources of ideas for places to go and things to do and will very happily pre-book activities and organise gourmet picnic packs. Guests are more than welcome to bring their bikes or hire them locally and explore the stunning countryside on two wheels. The breathtaking Mawddach trail is ideal as it offers a 10-mile, mainly flat route along a disused railway line from Dolgellau and across Barmouth’s iconic bridge. Its pretty pushchair friendly too.
For a day out by boat, children will love King Arthurs Labrinyth in Machynlleth which lets families don a hard hat and travel on the water through an amazing set of underground cavens whilst your friendly tour guide retells stories about King Arthur and other Welsh legends as your travel.
After a busy day of adventures and walking around the beautiful countryside tummies are bound to rumbling and thankfully there is no shortage of places to eat from cafes and pubs to gourmet grub. Let little ones enjoy the kids high tea at the house and take advantage of the baby listening services to enjoy a night out at one of the great local bistros. Cool and contemporary Bwyty Maddach, boasts unparalled estuary views, whilst highly rated Dylanwad Da, has found its way into the Good Food Guide recommendations every year since 1990.
Getting There: Dolgellau is set on the main A470 road that runs from North to South Wales. It is approx. 3hrs drive from Cardiff, 4.5hrs from London and 2hrs from Birmingham. Ffynon Townhouse is stunning and immaculate inside and out. The Butlers Pantry (kitchen) is ideal for feeding babies and toddlers and also for a cheeky takeaway when the thought of a restaurant with baby seems too much.
The bed was very comfortable, cot was perfect and shower was excellent too.
By far the best and most luxurious B & B we have stayed in!
