BFB's Overview

As a 200-year old hunting lodge on the Blenheim Palace Estate – this is not just a holiday cottage, this is a unique experience for parents to spoil themselves with a really indulgent break. Thankfully for BFB, babies and toddlers are well catered for too with toys, books, safe places to play and top branded equipment including OXO Tot Sprout highchair, McLaren stroller and Avent Monitor.

Water Meadow Cottage is the ultimate in traditional English country living and, with the owner’s business being Unlisted Design, this style philosophy literally runs through the very fabric of the house. Only the best in British furnishings and decoration have been used, such as Ochre lighting, Cole & Sons wallpaper, Royal Doulton fireplaces and Andrew Martin fabrics, plus the owner has incorporated vintage, reclaimed and restored features to complete the quintessentially English ambience.

The main living room and adjoining library dining room are straight from the pages of a period drama but bristling with contemporary flair too. The imposing fireplace, Chesterfield and bookshelves crammed with literary classics and curiosities, all make these family spaces cosy and intimate for playing board games, reading stories and enjoying suppers by a roaring fire, plus there’s flat-screen Satelite TV’s, DVD’s, IPod dock and Wi Fi for 21st century entertainment.

The state of the art kitchen, with its sleek Welsh slate countertops, would make a Mrs Bridges squeal with delight and provides the perfect stage for foodies to cook up a family feast. All the basics, such as tea, coffee, milk and butter are provided and there’s an honesty larder stocked with everything from pasta to wine. If guests feel like playing lord of the manor instead of cook, a team of local chefs will prepare a range of seasonal gourmet meals to be pre-ordered, ready to heat, serve and enjoy.

Upstairs at Water Meadow Cottage, the master bedroom is a playful blend of heritage pieces, rustic furnishings, soft Italian leather touches and sumptuous Belgian linens, all set against Zoffany Chinoiserie wallpaper, antique mirrors, crystal chandeliers and rich burgundy silk curtains. The second bedroom complements the master with its wrought iron double bedstead, Asian-style wardrobe, opulent maize coloured walls and deep celadon drapery with silk trimming. The period family bathroom, with its beamed ceiling includes an indulgent cast-iron roll-top bath in regal plum, a walk-in shower and under-floor heating.

Outside, families can tuck into al fresco meals on a heated terrace and roasting sticks are provided for toasting marshmallow on the barbecue. A lawned garden runs along the edge of the gentle-flowing River Evenlode (safely fenced) and anglers can easily obtain a licence in town for a peaceful hour or two fishing. A smaller, enclosed garden is opposite the terrace and kitchen which is perfect for keeping an eye on adventurous crawlers and toddlers, plus there’s a large basket of toys in the lovely, large summer house, with a big comfy sofa and chairs to gaze out on the views of the meadows and river.

As if all this luxury and indulgence still isn’t enough, a range of gourmet food hampers, spa product hampers and fresh flowers can be ordered or guests can book a health and relaxation package for more pampering and rejuvenation.

Location Information

Water Meadow Cottage boasts an incredibly prestigious address, being located in Blenheim Palace Estate in Oxfordshire, the birthplace of Winston Churchill and present-day home of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. The idyllic rural setting is a world away from frenetic city living and yet London Paddington Station is just 50 minutes on the hourly trains or 1 hr 30 mins by car.

The world Heritage site of Blenheim Palace itself and the Capability Brown landscaped gardens are just 5 minutes from the cottage and an obvious must for packing a picnic and paying a visit. The highlights include fabulous state rooms, a varied programme of events and exhibitions, gift shop and variety of refreshment options, including the Water Terrace Cafe and Champagne Bar, Oxfordshire Pantry, family-oriented Pleasure Gardens Deli and Sunday lunch carvery in The Orangery.

Also a few minutes walk from Water Meadow Cottage is the lovely market town of Woodstock, where the ancient buildings are in the typical honey-coloured stone of the Cotswolds and the streets are crammed with antique shops, galleries, gift shops, tea rooms and atmospheric inns.

The historic university city of Oxford, evocatively described as ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’ is just 8 miles from Water Meadow Cottage (15 minutes), with all the big shops, little boutiques, pubs and eating establishments families could need, maybe combined with a leisurely punt down the river. More serious shoppers could head to Bicester Village designer outlet (30 mins) and more serious foodie parents could book a CRB babysitter at Water Meadow Cottage for a romantic dinner at Raymond Blanc’s Manoir aux Quat’Saisons (40 mins).

The surrounding Cotswold countryside is officially an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, renowned for its thatched cottage villages and charming country inns. Shakespeare’s Stratford upon Avon is also only 40 minutes drive.

  • A stunning cottage in a beautiful setting, it's so luxurious it's hard to believe it's child friendly but everything you could possibly need is catered for. A very special place.Review dated 03/06/2014

  • We loved the cottage. Beautifully furnished and fully equipped. The "Insider's Guide" was really useful, and the pubs they recommended were excellent. The owners went out of their way to find and then book pony rides for our daughters. Will definitely recommend to friends - in fact we already have.Review dated 24/11/2013
