BFB's Overview

This luxurious 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom villa with pool is a wonderful example of contemporary style woven into traditional architecture. The traditional Trulli thick stone walls, pretty alcoves and charming coned ceilings have been enhanced with high quality Italian bathroom fittings, marble-topped kitchen units and mod cons including Wi-Fi, Xbox and the all important dishwasher.

Its location is equally idyllic, nestled among olive groves on a tranquil 5-acre small-holding, just 30 minutes drive from the coast and the famous ‘White City’ of Ostuni, and a short drive from a bustling local town with well respected restaurants.

The views from the villa’s wide terrace and safely fenced pool with shady gazebo – perfect for long lazy days in the sun – are glorious. Junior guests can be let off the leash to explore the grounds, bouncing on the trampoline or helping parents harvest the organic vegetable patch from which guests can help themselves.

Andy and wife Claire relocated here from London and it’s easy to see the temptation that lead them to make such a leap. They lived onsite (they have since moved back to the UK) with their brood of three little ones for many years and are a brilliant resource for families renting the villa since they are full of advice on the best places to visit, shop and eat in the region with or without little ones in tow.

With children of their own, the owners are mindful of the challenges of travelling with babies and toddlers. They have thoughtfully equipped the villa with an impressive list of baby and toddler gear (see Fast Facts for full breakdown), as well as offering a host of useful services such as babysitting, housekeeping and meal delivery, ensuring mums and dads get the relaxing break they deserve. There can be little to beat a warm evening enjoying a candle lit meal you didn’t make yourself, al fresco with a baby monitor in hand and memories of sunny days by the pool or beach.

Accommodation Overview:

Bedroom 1 is set under two of the Trullo cones, within the oldest part of the building, it can be arranged as a double or twin and has romantic fairy lights strewn over the beams. Bedside lights are set within original alcoves and the wardrobe is formed from the old well. It also has its own entrance from the terrace. Space for a cot.

Bathroom 1 is an ensuite with a third Trullo cone, high quality Italian-designed integrated bath and shower, WC and basin. The mosaic tiles in natural tones flow into the restored stonework of the Trullo roof.

Bedroom 2 has a lovely vaulted ceiling and can also be arranged as a double or twin. The window overlooks the terrace and original alcoves form the wardrobe. A third ‘put me up’ style bed or a cot can be placed in the room.

Bathroom 2 is also ensuite. It is spacious with a large walk-in shower, basin, WC and bidet. The modern fittings are offset by the stylish mosaic tiles and natural stone and plaster finish.

The Kitchen is well-designed with a vaulted ceiling, 5-ring gas hob, oven, under-counter fridge with freezer/icebox compartment and dishwasher (the washing machine is in an external laundry room). It also has a small dining table. A large table is provided on the terrace to dine al fresco.

The Living Room has doors opening to the terrace and a vaulted ceiling. It is furnished simply and stylishly and boasts TV and an Xbox to watch DVDs and play games. Wi-Fi is available although the service can be temperamental.

Outside the terrace has fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and a large stone dining table to seat 8, plus a BBQ and a shaded gazebo, which is large enough to lie down on. In addition, there are five acres of land where guests can enjoy picnics, sit and read or help themselves to seasonal organic fruit and veg from the raised beds for meals.

The Pool is a 4.5×11 metres salt-water swimming pool, adjacent to the house. It is sympathetically fenced to help keep small children safe and has a large gazebo to provide lots of shade.

New for 2017 - Larger groups can opt to rent the villa with the additional converted outbuildings the Hayloft (sleeps 2) and Stables (sleeps 5) for additional cost. See 'similar accommodation' tab for more details.

Location Information

Located in the ‘heel’ of Italy, Puglia has miles of unspoilt coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, both an easy drive away. The region is covered in olive groves and vineyards, so the countryside is always green, and food features delicious seafood, fantastic antipasti and wonderful pizzas, all washed down with great local wines.

Ceglie Messapica is the nearest town to the villa and Cisternino, Martina Franca and Ostuni are close by. The towns are situated on top of a hill with beautiful views across the Itria Valley, with historic centres dating back centuries. All have wonderful old cobbled streets and fascinating architecture and, when all that wandering has worked up an appetite, there are plenty of restaurants so exploring will be well rewarded with plenty of the local delicacies. Ceglie has a supermarket stocked with all the basic groceries, but there's much more exciting wares to be sampled at the local market every Saturday, from 7am until 1pm.

The closest beaches are at Ostuni and Torre Canne, about 30 minutes’ drive away. There are public beaches which are free to access and some have cafes and restaurants backing onto them, and also miles of ‘lidos’ – managed areas of beach where, for a small entrance fee, there's access to family friendly services such as covered parking, loos and showers, bars and restaurants, umbrellas and sunbeds for hire, and lifeguards. Pilone, Lido Bizzaro, Lido Boscoverde and Lido Morelli are all excellent beaches. There’s also a nature reserve at Torre Guaceto which has a long sandy beach and some great shallows which are perfect for small children to play in. Between June and September there are guided snorkelling trips on Thursdays and Saturdays.

Getting There: The villa is 45 minutes’ drive from Brindisi airport, 90minutes from Bari and about three hours’ drive from Naples. Car high is essential.

Who owns this place?

Rustic Puglia is owned and run by Claire and Andy James. We moved to Italy in October 2008 to try and combine work with family life and our three young children, Rosie, Lucas and Syra. We live on site in a home developed from the old summer kitchen, feeding stalls and farmstore. It has its own private entrance but we're on-hand to give guests any assistance you may require. We have two dogs – Merry and Ember – who spend most of the day outside. All rural properties have dogs, they work as very effective doorbells! Ours are no exception and you’ll hear them bark to let us know when we have visitors. We also have three cats – Nibbles, Sizzles and Millie – who are very cheeky, not to mention the chickens for freshly laid eggs and two sheep.

Claire (pregnant with Syra), Andy, Rosie & Lucas

What do they love about it?

What's not to love? Acres of countryside, tumbledown trulli, quirky towns, delicious food and miles of beaches - there's something to suit everyone! We love it because it's such an interesting area of contrasts, the people are helpful and friendly, and we get to spend more time together as a family. We love the countryside for its rawness, the towns for their proudness and the sea which provides us driftwood for the fire in the winter and family fun in the summer.

What do the kids love about it?

All kids seem to love being in the water, so if they ever tire of the salt-water swimming pool you've got not one but two coastlines to choose a beach from. Most children fall in love with at least one of our animals, and Merry, Ember, Nibbles, Sizzles and Millie all love being made a fuss of. The chickens are always keen to have your compost and it's a great way of giving the children a rewarding job as the chickens come racing towards them to see what goodies are in store. Get them to check out the laying box and they may also be rewarded with an organic, free range egg! We provide a box of toys and books, DVDs and Xbox games for times when they need to chill out and a big trampoline for when they need to let off steam.

  • We've spent a heavenly week here in Claire and Andy's gorgeous trullo and grounds, torn every day as to whether to explore the beautiful little towns nearby (we loved Martina Franca, Locorotundo, and Cisternino, with Locorotundo the favourite and a 'must see'), go the the beach, or enjoy the amazing pool with massive shallow end perfect for little ones, swings, trampoline, feed the animals, play with the toys, pick and cook the garden produce we were allowed to help ourselves to, lol about under the gazaebos etc here. Our 2 year old would quite happily have spent the week hanging about the trullo grounds and had the time of his life! When we ventured to the beach though, the beach at Torre Guaceto was amazing for kids - the water stays shallow for a really long way out, it's big but not too crowded, lovely warm water, and even a sweet little train that takes you down to the beach that the kids loved. • We had a wonderful week at Rustic Puglia and would recommend it highly! Andy and Clare (and the children) are great hosts who have done a fantastic job of restoring their historic 'trulli' home into a stylish, family friendly get-away. They are happy to share their experience of this unique region, which has so much to explore, from the unique 'trulli' houses which pepper the rolling landscape, to beautiful, sandy beaches - all within easy driving distance. However, much of our time was spent simply relaxing by the lovely salt water pool - which we had to ourselves. In the evenings, we ventured out to local restaurants, which all serve great quality, rustic food in family-friendly settings - it is virtually impossible to eat badly in this unspoilt area of Italy! Thank you Clare and Andy for a very enjoyable holiday : ))Review dated 15/09/2011

We were spoilt for choice on the beach front but really loved that one. We went out for dinner one night while Claire babysat (wonderful!) and had one of the best meals we've had in years in Martina Franca at a place called 'Oseria Piazzetta Garibaldi'. We also chose to have the cook make a couple of meals for us for an even more relaxing holiday. Claire, Andy, and their children really do know how to be there when you need them (and it was lovely to know they were there to chat to, get all the local info from, and for our little one to tag along with Andy watering the 'bamatos' etc!) and yet you feel you have the place to yourselves too somehow. Everything you needed was there, it all just felt very easy. It was the best holiday we've had since having kids by far - the only one where we could use the words 'holiday' and 'relaxing' in the same sentence! We hope to come back in a couple of years time and will be recommending to all our friends!.
