BFB's Overview

The perfect combination of New England chic and the best of Cornwall is the only way to sum up ‘Tregea’, a lovely 5-bedroom house with beautiful views of three different bays, just five minutes walk from the golden sands and clear waters of Harlyn Bay. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also just two miles from Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, or his more family-friendly posh fish and chip shop/bistro, and just 10mins from Newquay airport, which makes a fly-drive combination from London or many of the UK’s regional airports, an attractive option.

As stylish as it clearly is, Tregea is also well-designed for family life. The five bedrooms are split over two floors making it ideal for two families holidaying together and neither need worry about waking their babies disturbing the other family’s sleeps. The five bathrooms, including a genius downstairs wet room for rinsing off the remains of a day at the beach before a relaxing evening, means no need for military-style planning in order to get out and about before noon each day. That said most guests find there are some days when they really don’t want to leave the comfort of the house with its lovely interiors, luxury feel and totally private, enclosed 1.2 acre garden. The garden comes complete with trampoline, shed full of outdoor play gear and breathtaking sea views. Just fire up the BBQ, pull out the toys, including full-sized football nets, open a few bottles of wine and enjoy some quality time ‘at home’. Its easy to while away a whole day with only the beautiful coastal sunset to alert you to the fact it maybe well be past the kids’ bed time!

The interior of Tregea is just as beautiful as its exterior. Real wood floor boards reflect white-washed walls and high quality furnishings in a palette of nautical blue and white. The living room boasts lovely sea views and luxury touches in the form of a large plasma TV with full SKY package, DVD player with full library of films and a BOSE Ipod dock. The kitchen is light bright and newly fitted with a dishwasher and a microwave, along with fridge, freezer, cooker, hob and Nespresso coffee machine (coffee supplied). It’s stocked with everything needed for meals from al fresco snacks to a lavish dinner party. The washing machine and tumble dryer are housed in a separate utility area towards the back of the house. There’s also a dining room for 10 and a conservatory with panoramic sea views – the perfect spot for enjoying a quiet read or for children to play on chillier days, a chest full of toys is provided. Broadband access is available for those who need to keep in touch and an extra mid-week clean can be arranged on request.

Accommodation Overview:

The house sleeps 12+ infants in five bedrooms split over two floors. The ground floor has three bedrooms; a spacious room with three singles (two of which can be made up as a double), a children's bedroom with a set of bunk beds and a single bed plus an ensuite double room with king size bed and shower room. Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms. The first is a spacious double room with super-king sized bed, an in room bath with skylight above for star gazing (toilet and sink separate) and a separate reading area in a white shuttered alcove overlooking the gardens and sea. The second again has a super-king size double bed with a similar reading area. It has a separate bathroom with walk-in shower, bath, toilet, sink and under-floor heating. There is a small corridor off this room with handing wardrobe which leads to a glass viewing platform where you can breathe in the sea air. The two rooms on this floor each have space for one/two cots.

Outside the house has a spacious garden with stretches to 1.2 acres and is totally enclosed and private. There is a large table and chairs with parasol, BBQ and raised wooden deck perfect for alfresco dining. Children will love the large trampoline (with safety nets), full size football goals, timber swing, rope ladder, basketball hoop and space to play. The garden looks out onto the sea and is a lovely space to relax and take in the sunset.

At the back of the property there is a surf store (next to the wet room) where guests can find wellies, surfs suits, buckets, spades, boogie boards and a variety of beach paraphernalia for their enjoyment. The house has a double garage and parking on the driveway to the side and rear of the property for four to five cars without a problem. It really is the perfect group retreat!

Location Information

The house is just five minutes walk from the village of St Merryn, which welcomes visitors with a sign boasting ‘Seven Bays for Seven Days’, thanks to its easy access to seven lovely beaches. The village also boasts a handful of shops, a post office, a couple of pubs, a choice of restaurants, a deli and an award-winning fish and chip shop. Five minutes walk from the house in the other direction is Harlyn Bay, which is excellent for surfing, swimming, paddling, sunbathing, sandcastle building and rockpooling. Plus it's home to another good pub. Cycle hire with tagalongs or child-seats is available in Padstow from where you can join the easy Camel Trail along a disused railway track with beautiful estuary views. You can go as a far as Bodmin (14 miles each way) but most settle for Wadebridge (6 miles). Rain needn’t mar a stay at Tregea as there are plenty of indoor attractions within easy reach including the Eden project with its toddler-friendly land train, or Crealy Adventure Park which has a petting farm and a play zone specifically aimed at under 5s. Activities from golf and horse-riding to sea fishing, kayaking and kite-surfing can also be arranged nearby. For a special night out, be sure to get organised and pre-book babysitting and a table at one of the many fabulous restaurants nearby. Highly recommended are Rick Stein's St. Petroc's, Jamie Oliver's Fifteen, Michelin-Starred St Ervan Manor or, Good Food Guide Restaurant of the year, 'No.6' in Padstow.

Who owns this place?

Tregea and Trelawney are coastal retreats belonging to a London family who spend term time living just off the Kings Road in Chelsea and like nothing more than getting away from it all when the three children have holidays from school! They fell in love with this part of Cornwall when they visited their friend's home in nearby Trevone eleven years ago. By the time they left, they had found Tregea and by the end of that Summer they were the proud owners of this beautiful home with its' stunning garden and glorious views. Suzanne undertook a huge refurbishment job which took almost eighteen months and then the fun began!!! Their children are now 14,12 and 10 and they all love their home from home in Harlyn Bay :-)...they continue to upgrade it constantly and it is home to their children's favourite toys from over the years, all of which are there for BFBH families! The playroom is a beloved spot of all guests as it keeps the children busy no matter what the weather! Trelawney was added to the portfolio in 2016 and was a project undertaken by Suzanne from start to finish - it sits in a plot next door to Tregea and enjoys the same phenomenal views and set up!

Cousins in Cornwall

What do they love about it?

They love it because it is spacious, TOTALLY different to their London home, because there is fresh air, there are stunning views, comfortable beds and because each and every time they arrive there, they feel their shoulders relaxing, their breathing slowing down and they feel the chance to enjoy life approaching again :-). They love it because tracksuits and wellies are the order of the day, because they can STILL enjoy the glorious food which they have also been spoiled with in London in many of the local restaurants, they love it because their children play all day and sleep all night and because there is nowhere else like it in the world...

What do the kids love about it?

They love the space, the garden, the surfing lessons, being with their friends, they love having lunch out on the deck, watching for the rabbits in the evening on the lawn, they love rock pooling, the bunkbeds, they love all snuggling on the huge beanbag together to watch a movie, they love the wetroom (much better than boring baths at home apparently!!), the table tennis table, table football, playing football on the lawn with the "proper" football goals (according to Finn, age 8!!), they love combing the garden to make petal perfume, catching butterflies with their nets, icecream on the beach - what is not to love - it is children's paradise....

  • We stayed at Tregea in June this year. It had been a tough and tiring 6 months and we were looking for some sanctuary and a bit of luxury. At Tregea we found both in spades. "We" were three generations ranging from 18 months to 69 years and there was something for everyone: beautiful decor, snugly throw blankets, bean bags to disappear into (me); AMAZING views (69 year old aunt); garden as far as the eye can see complete with footie goals and giant trampoline (1.5 and 3 year olds); pub in walking distance (35 year old sister); gorgeous, very well kitted out kitchen (my fab cook of a mum who catered all week - thanks Mam!! x) and two TVs (everyone who wanted to watch the World Cup rather than Peppa Pig...). The house was beautiful, flooded with light and incredibly spacious. • We had everything we needed and more; the girls were beyond thrilled with the selection of toys and the grown ups all agreed we could have quite happily sat on the decking, drinking in the incredible views and many bottles of prosecco, for the entire holiday... I opted for trampolining with the three year old over the treadmill to work off all the butter, fudge and the Cornish Arms' crab linguine.Review dated 04/07/2016

  • Wonderful stay, super house to share together, very fortunate with the weather to enjoy the beaches and beautiful views. Yummy food and fantastic day at the cookery school (nearby). Review dated 13/02/2015

  • We have all enjoyed a fabulous sunny week in Tregea. We have had a fantastic time. Tregea has been perfect for all requirements. The guys particularly liked the big bean bags whilst watching the first heat of the world cup. Milly enjoyed kicking a ball around the garden and loved visiting the beach each day. We have all had a really lovely time. Thank you very much. Review dated 12/06/2014

  • Another wonderful week at this gorgeous house, we had such a lovely week and despite the weather not being great... we really really enjoyed ourselves and are very sad to be back home. We enjoyed ourselves so much we thinking are about staying two weeks next year.Review dated 17/08/2010

  • An absolutely amazing place, beautifully decorated and so much for our little boy Joe to do that he didn't want to leave. The conservatory with toys was brilliant along with the garden and garage, we just kept discovering more and more for Joe to play with. We were fortunate enough to have reasonable weather so we were in the garden loads and we obviously visited the beach quite a lot. The kitchen is brilliant with lots of gadgets so it was great to stay in and do some cooking and give ourselves a break from Rick Stein's many restaurants.Review dated 16/07/2010

  • I stayed at Harlyn Bay Cottage:in April this year- we had high hopes given the info on BFB and Tregea way exceeded our expectations- it is really stylish and very comfortable - fab for the children (3 very little ones in our party) and there's perfect beaches and brilliant restaurants all close by- we're aiming to head back asap! We stayed at Tregea in June this year. It had been a tough and tiring 6 months and we were looking for some sanctuary and a bit of luxury. At Tregea we found both in spades.

The house was beautiful, flooded with light and incredibly spacious. It was luxurious and beautifully decorated but you never felt like you needed to follow the kids around all day - "put that down, don't sit there, shoes off in the house, etc etc...". Suzanne was amazing to deal with going through the booking process and provided all the information we needed. She was so friendly and relaxed that it really helped us to feel at home during our stay.

There was a glorious playroom which was filled (quite literally) to the rafters with toys. We never ran out of things to do - even on the drizzly days when we couldn't scoot around the garden, attempt death defying somersaults on the trampoline or score a hat trick (with the three year old in goal but still...).

We had 7 action packed days, built hundreds of sandcastles, ate scones, strolled around Padstow. The kids slept like logs every night (the place is worth every penny for this alone!) and the grown ups enjoyed many bottles of wine on the terrace in the evening sunshine or cosied up in the room with the views, enjoying the moody skies and choppy sea in the distance.

As a mum of two with a tiny Vauxhall Corsa the fact that the house was kitted out so thoughtfully and thoroughly was incredible. There really was everything we needed and more which meant less to pack and (joy of joys!) less to unpack when we got home.

We had such a blissful week - eating, drinking and playing with My Little Ponies to our hearts' content. Just wonderful - we can't wait to go back!!
