The perfect combination of New England chic and the best of Cornwall is the only way to sum up ‘Tregea’, a lovely 5-bedroom house with beautiful views of three different bays, just five minutes walk from the golden sands and clear waters of Harlyn Bay. As if that wasn’t enough, it’s also just two miles from Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, or his more family-friendly posh fish and chip shop/bistro, and just 10mins from Newquay airport, which makes a fly-drive combination from London or many of the UK’s regional airports, an attractive option.
As stylish as it clearly is, Tregea is also well-designed for family life. The five bedrooms are split over two floors making it ideal for two families holidaying together and neither need worry about waking their babies disturbing the other family’s sleeps. The five bathrooms, including a genius downstairs wet room for rinsing off the remains of a day at the beach before a relaxing evening, means no need for military-style planning in order to get out and about before noon each day. That said most guests find there are some days when they really don’t want to leave the comfort of the house with its lovely interiors, luxury feel and totally private, enclosed 1.2 acre garden. The garden comes complete with trampoline, shed full of outdoor play gear and breathtaking sea views. Just fire up the BBQ, pull out the toys, including full-sized football nets, open a few bottles of wine and enjoy some quality time ‘at home’. Its easy to while away a whole day with only the beautiful coastal sunset to alert you to the fact it maybe well be past the kids’ bed time!
The interior of Tregea is just as beautiful as its exterior. Real wood floor boards reflect white-washed walls and high quality furnishings in a palette of nautical blue and white. The living room boasts lovely sea views and luxury touches in the form of a large plasma TV with full SKY package, DVD player with full library of films and a BOSE Ipod dock. The kitchen is light bright and newly fitted with a dishwasher and a microwave, along with fridge, freezer, cooker, hob and Nespresso coffee machine (coffee supplied). It’s stocked with everything needed for meals from al fresco snacks to a lavish dinner party. The washing machine and tumble dryer are housed in a separate utility area towards the back of the house. There’s also a dining room for 10 and a conservatory with panoramic sea views – the perfect spot for enjoying a quiet read or for children to play on chillier days, a chest full of toys is provided. Broadband access is available for those who need to keep in touch and an extra mid-week clean can be arranged on request.
The house sleeps 12+ infants in five bedrooms split over two floors. The ground floor has three bedrooms; a spacious room with three singles (two of which can be made up as a double), a children's bedroom with a set of bunk beds and a single bed plus an ensuite double room with king size bed and shower room. Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms. The first is a spacious double room with super-king sized bed, an in room bath with skylight above for star gazing (toilet and sink separate) and a separate reading area in a white shuttered alcove overlooking the gardens and sea. The second again has a super-king size double bed with a similar reading area. It has a separate bathroom with walk-in shower, bath, toilet, sink and under-floor heating. There is a small corridor off this room with handing wardrobe which leads to a glass viewing platform where you can breathe in the sea air. The two rooms on this floor each have space for one/two cots.
Outside the house has a spacious garden with stretches to 1.2 acres and is totally enclosed and private. There is a large table and chairs with parasol, BBQ and raised wooden deck perfect for alfresco dining. Children will love the large trampoline (with safety nets), full size football goals, timber swing, rope ladder, basketball hoop and space to play. The garden looks out onto the sea and is a lovely space to relax and take in the sunset.
At the back of the property there is a surf store (next to the wet room) where guests can find wellies, surfs suits, buckets, spades, boogie boards and a variety of beach paraphernalia for their enjoyment. The house has a double garage and parking on the driveway to the side and rear of the property for four to five cars without a problem. It really is the perfect group retreat!
The house is just five minutes walk from the village of St Merryn, which welcomes visitors with a sign boasting ‘Seven Bays for Seven Days’, thanks to its easy access to seven lovely beaches. The village also boasts a handful of shops, a post office, a couple of pubs, a choice of restaurants, a deli and an award-winning fish and chip shop. Five minutes walk from the house in the other direction is Harlyn Bay, which is excellent for surfing, swimming, paddling, sunbathing, sandcastle building and rockpooling. Plus it's home to another good pub. Cycle hire with tagalongs or child-seats is available in Padstow from where you can join the easy Camel Trail along a disused railway track with beautiful estuary views. You can go as a far as Bodmin (14 miles each way) but most settle for Wadebridge (6 miles). Rain needn’t mar a stay at Tregea as there are plenty of indoor attractions within easy reach including the Eden project with its toddler-friendly land train, or Crealy Adventure Park which has a petting farm and a play zone specifically aimed at under 5s. Activities from golf and horse-riding to sea fishing, kayaking and kite-surfing can also be arranged nearby. For a special night out, be sure to get organised and pre-book babysitting and a table at one of the many fabulous restaurants nearby. Highly recommended are Rick Stein's St. Petroc's, Jamie Oliver's Fifteen, Michelin-Starred St Ervan Manor or, Good Food Guide Restaurant of the year, 'No.6' in Padstow.
