BFB's Overview

Through a little gate and an English cottage garden full of flowers, The Old Manse peeps out from clambering wisteria and climbing roses - as pretty as a picture. Being Grade II listed, the owners have recently renovated the house to make the most of its period character whilst creating a super cosy and deceptively spacious family home, that’s well equipped for babies and toddlers.

It’s easy to imagine a country vicar scribbling sermons in the drawing room, and now frazzled parents can retreat here for a quiet moment, snuggling in the leather sofa or big armchair by the wood burner, with a book from the shelves and a little tipple from the honesty bar. In the main living room, the whole family can get comfy and cosy on a designer, L-shaped sofa in front of a wood burner, watching the Smart TV and streaming movies or playing with the toys, games and Lego provided. The new dining kitchen makes another homely hub of the house, with yet another wood burner by the table to kick back with a Nespresso cappuccino, plus a new Rayburn for stress-free slow cooked suppers and baking accessories including cake tins, a mixer and ice cream maker.

The Old Manse has two elegant master bedrooms with polished wood floors, one of which has a romantic, king-size sleigh bed and the other with an original fireplace and a luxurious armchair that’s a godsend for midnight feeds. Both master bedrooms have space for a cot and the house also a single bedroom and another with adult-sized bunk beds. The owners have updated the house with two new luxury bathrooms – one as a gleaming wet room, with walk-in rain shower and Fired Earth marble tiles; the other with a bath, a rain shower and Metro crackle-glaze tiles.

In the gorgeous front garden, families can spread out a blanket on the little lawn for a picnic, with bees and butterflies flitting among the flowers. At the rear, the house also has a private sun trap courtyard with table and chairs, sun loungers and a pub-style bench for mealtimes outdoors.

Accommodation overview

The Old Manse is a spacious home for up to 7 people, plus babies, with a cot and a Moses basket provided. A cosy family living room is carpeted and has a wood burning stove in a big stone fireplace, an L-shaped sofa that comfortably seats 6 and a flat screen Smart TV. A separate drawing room has a leather sofa and comfy armchair by a wood burning stove, lots of books on the shelves and an honesty bar. The luxury dining kitchen with flagstone floors, has a table that seats 8 by a wood burning stove, handmade units with stone worktop, a Rayburn cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, Nespresso and professional cooking accessories, including electric mixer, ice cream maker and cake tins. One master bedroom has a king size sleigh bed and the other has a European double bed and a large armchair. The third bedroom has adult-sized bunk beds and the fourth has a single bed. Two new luxury bathrooms comprise a family bathroom, with a bath and a rain shower, plus a large wet room with a walk-in rain shower.

Location Information

The Old Manse is located at the heart of the Somerset Levels, just a toddler toddle from the thriving high street and pretty village green of Curry Rivel. In the village, a handy minimarket is open 7 days a week and a country style cafe serves brill breakfasts, plus there is a traditional pub and a new gastro pub (opening Easter 2016). The ancient market town of Langport is only 2.5 miles away and the county town of Taunton, 12 miles.

Just 3 minutes’ drive down the road, the Brown and Forest Smokery is a favourite with Rick Stein for its smokey specialities, including smoked trout, chicken, duck and lamb, which are served at its own award-winning restaurant and shipped off to Fortnum and Mason. The perfect accompaniment to these goodies might well be the ciders and pressed apple juices from the Burrow Hill Cider Brandy Farm (10 mins) where families can sample the products straight from the casks and wander around the 160 acres of orchards, overlooking the Somerset Levels. The next stop on the local foodie trail is the award winning Pitney Farm Shop (15 mins), selling top quality organic meat and veg, then how about the ultimate Sunday Lunch at Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall’s River Cottage Canteen and Deli in Axminster (50 mins).

The Somerset Levels are always appearing on TV nature and wildlife programmes, thanks to its unique habitats and famous murmurations of starlings, swopping over the countryside. The RSPB Swell Nature Reserve is just 5 minutes’ drive, with nature trails and hides for bird spotting, and the largest heronry in the South West. The Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is 25 minutes away and Glastonbury Tor (30 mins) provides panoramic views over Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire and Wales. A stroll around Glastonbury is fun too with its funky cafes and spiritual gift shops.

For a day by the sea, building sand castles, peering into rockpools and hunting for fossils, Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is less than hour away, including a string of beach villages and the seaside town of Lyme Regis. Other fun days out for families include Longleat Safari Park and Wookey Hole Caverns.

Nearest medical centre / A&E: Taunton, 20 mins.
