"Like a boutique hotel but half the cost" is how one past guests describes the Post House and its adjoining 1-bedroom cottage 'The Old Bakery' and we couldn't agree more. With a bundle of 5 star reviews under its belt and, with a fantastic location in the peaceful village of Chewton Mendip, midway between Bath, Wells and Longleat Safari Park, this place won’t stay a best kept secret for long so we advise would-be guests to book up well in advance.
A chic little bolthole, The Old Bakery is part of a Grade ii listed building with the owner's luxury b&b, The Post House' taking up the other side. Lucky cottage guests benefit from their own private home from home with stylish French Provencal-style interiors, fluffy white robes, sumptuous towels, high quality bed linens and complimentary designer toiletries adding to the boutique hotel suite feel.
It is the perfect retreat for frazzled parents searching for a romantic break with in tow. After an indulgent breakfast, guests of the cottage can focus on unwinding, whether that be on one of the cosy lounge chairs, book in hand, or with wellies on exploring the local country walks and sampling the nearby cosy pubs. Those willing to venture slightly further afield will find the Georgian splendours, bistros, boutiques and spa at Bath just 20 minutes away, or Postman Pat's Village and a host of four-legged 'friends' at nearby Longleat. During balmy summer evenings guests can take to the private Mediterranean-style terrace with its dining set and daybed and enjoy a glass of wine over a spot of star gazing whilst little ones quietly sleep the night away after a busy day exploring. Come winter guests can curl up on the sofas in one of the fluffy robes provided with a good film and a cup of cocoa.

The Old Bakery offers a spacious cottage for two plus a baby or child (£15 supplement). It comprises of a bright living area with a vaulted beamed ceiling, comfortable sofas, large LCD TV and dining area with long oak table perfect for entertaining during guests stay. The country style kitchen with handmade units and antique free standing units is well equipped with oven, hob, grill large fridge and plenty of utensils for whipping up romantic feasts. Upstairs there is a double bedroom with impressive large wooden bed, a small LCD TV and beautiful en-suite bathroom with bath and shower over.
Outside guests have use of an additional private space with a Mediterranean-style walled courtyard furnished with with a garden dining set and comfy day bed perfect for stretching out with a favourite book.

The Posthouse is located in the heart of the pretty Somerset village of Chewton Mendip which has a lovely church, a selection of great country walks perfect for families who love being outdoors and a traditional local pub ‘ The Waldegrave Arms’ which serves good food and friendly service.
Walkers in the group can ensure there’s something special waiting for them at the other end with a visit to The Kings Arm pub/restaurant in Litton, 2 miles away across open fields, which serves up wonderful food with a lovely garden and selection of local beers. Their Sunday Lunch is well worth a visit, booking is recommended for evenings!
For an extra special meal head to The Pony and Trap just 8 miles away in Chew Manga. This delightful pub a Michelin star and usually requires booking ahead but with bustling Bath and the good selection of restaurants available in nearby Wells, guests are always spoilt for choice with great places to eat or enjoy a rare romantic evening out.
Wells is just 5 miles away and offers for more than just places to eat with a range of pretty boutique shops, a twice weekly farmers market of Saturday and Wednesdays plus a range of historic buildings including the Cathedral and The Vicars close which is the oldest inhabited street in England
Thrill seekers in the party can take a trip to Cheddar Gorge and Caves just 10 minutes’ drive away where visitors can choose to simply explore the walks and caves or take the plunge and try abseiling. For more of a family out Wookey Hole caves are is just a short drive away and well worth a visit.
For keen shoppers in the party the Mulberry factory shop and Kilver Court Outlet is well worth a visit for those looking to pick up a designer bargain and features labels including Toast and Aubin and Wills.
After all that excitement, those looking to maybe take a break from the excitement can head to Bath and unwind in the Thermae Spa which offers a range of treatments to help sooth away stress.
The family favourites Longleat House and Safari Park ( 40 minutes’ drive) and Peppa Pig world (30 minutes) are well worth a visit and make for the perfect special treat for mini guests!
