BFB's Overview

Set in the heart of the Vendee and nestling in an acre of pretty gardens, yet walking distance to a well serviced village, the Manoir du Moulin is chic little retreat, that is ideal for parents hoping to re-live the romantic, boutique breaks of old but with little ones in tow.

Canadians, Shari and Warren, treated the Manoir to a sensitive restoration in 2011 and now combine North American hospitality and comfort with contemporary luxury and authentic French character. The six newly renovated guest rooms and private gite (available from 2013) each boast custom-made furnishings, luxuries in the form of super-king beds, 400-thread count linens, rainfall showers, sumptuous bathrobes, Campagnie de Provence toiletries, Wi-Fi, LCD TVs and cocoon bath tubs, all artfully blended with original Manoir features such as the high ceilings, exposed stone walls and wooden floors.

Whilst parents revel in the luxury and style, mini guests are equally well looked after with a long list of useful nursery gear from cots and Moses baskets to highchairs and baby baths (full list in Fast facts), plus indoor toys, books and DVDs, and swings, slides and trikes outdoors.

All ages will enjoy the delicious breakfasts are served daily in the spacious conservatory. Tables groan with tasty fresh bread, pastries, croissants, cheeses and smoked meats, plus lovely homemade fruit jams and fresh pressed juices from the Manoir’s very own orchards. It is also worth noting that the handy shared guest fridges are great for storing milk and baby treats and ensuring even the smallest member of the family can be fully taken care of.

Come the evening, guests can either head out for a romantic meal reserved by Warren or Shari, who can also pre-book trusted babysitters, or follow an earlier suppe 'en famille' by retiring to the cosy study with comfy chairs and fully stocked bar, baby monitor in hand. Along with picking the brains of fellow guests, this also offers the opportunity to quizz the Manoir's Canadian hosts for tips and advice on planning the next day's adventure whether its heading out to one of the many unspoilt beaches and towns along the Vendee's 'Coast of Light', an action-packed day the the nearby 'Peu du Fou' medieval theme park, or sightseeing in one of the many local towns such as Nantes, La Rochelle and Les Sables D'Olonne, al are within about an hour's drive.

For lazy days closer to base, guests can make the most of the extensive gardens, whether picking a quiet spot to enjoy a picnic in the sun or playing with the little ones in the paddling pool and picking fruit from the many fruit trees. The centre of the village is within a few minutes stroll and comes alive on Friday mornings when the market takes place. The village bar and restaurant tables bustle with people enjoy coffees or lunch and taking in the scene.

Location Information

Manoir du Moulin is located in the Vendee region which is known as ‘the coast of light’ as it is said to receive as much sun as the Cote D’Azur so is perfect for those looking to escape the dreary weather in search of a spot of sunshine!

Nestled in its own extensive gardens, backed by parklands the house is just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of the local village of Sainte Hermine which has retained its rustic French charm and has two bars (one run by an English family), a nice restaurant, boulangerie, butcher and even a small cinema. Every Friday morning the village hosts a market featuring local fruit, vegetables and seafood which is well worth a visit.

Perfectly located for exploring the country and the coast, the Manoir is within 45 minutes from a range of beaches and coastal towns including La Rochelle and the pretty Il de Re which has a selection of quaint villages and a sandy beach. Keen surfers should head north of the seaside town of La Tranche sur Mer (40 mins.) where there is a string of three beaches La Terriere, Bud Bud and Les Conches which back onto beautiful dunes and are a little known surfers paradise!

For family days out there are plenty of options to keep mini guests entertained. For a theme park with a difference head to the award winning Puy de Fou (40 mins.) which features a Roman Coliseum, live shows, nightly spectacles and period villages- a big hit with mini history buffs! For animal lovers Mervent Natur’zoo is a must, located 25 minutes drive away in the heart of Mervent forest with over 200 animals that can be spotted roaming through the extensive woodland. The zoo also has a large play area and mini farm. Other recommended options include the Aquarium in Saint Hilaire (40 mins.) and Chateau des Aventuriers themed adventure trails (30 mins.).

There are also numerous historic chateaux in the area open to the public, some with shows, activities and entertainment for the kids.

There are also fast trains leaving Paris for Nantes direct every hour and take roughly 2 hours. Pick-ups can be arranged at the airport or train station although your own transport is recommended for getting around the area.
