Longlands Cottage is a lush, year-round BFB, complete with a luxurious indoor pool which little ones will love and where parents can unwind.
The 2-bedroom cottage is located in the idyllic Somerset countryside, on a small country estate which families sweep into through double electric gates from a quiet country lane. The views are pretty as a picture and there is an enclosed gravel garden at the rear, which is a sheltered sun-trap for eating outdoors and evenings under the stars. The owner is happy for children to play on a tree swing and trampoline in her own garden but there’s also a little lake through here so they must be supervised and the gate is kept locked.
Visit England has justly given Longlands Cottage a 4-star rating, with a gold award and the owner has equipped the cottage with baby and toddler essentials, from a cot, high chair and plastic crockery to swim nappies and toys. The styling and furnishings are the epitome of contemporary cosiness and boutique finishing touches include White Company toiletries, 800 thread linen and sumptuously soporific duvets.
The icing on the cake at Longlands Cottage is undoubtedly the stunning pool, just a few paces from the cottage and lockable by guests for the safety of straying toddlers. A wall of arching timber windows flood the pool house with light and create a luxurious poolside sun lounge area, with wicker furniture and an air hockey game for added amusement. Steps lead into the beautiful heated pool, and it’s just 1 metre deep all the way around, with the deepest part in the centre at 2 metres. Being 14 metre long, the pool is long enough for a few leisurely laps and big enough for families to have fun with the pool toys provided. The pool is open all year round from 9am to 12 noon and 4-8pm.
Longlands Cottage is an ideal cottage for a family of 4 plus a baby. The master bedroom has a king size bed and the second bedroom has twin beds. A travel cot is provided and there is space for this in the master bedroom. The bathroom is ultra sleek and modern, including a bath with an overhead shower. The sitting room is bright and spacious, with a pair of sofas, TV with a built-in DVD player and a Bluetooth radio, plus there is a selection of DVD’s, books, toys and games. The sitting room leads through to the kitchen diner which is well equipped and includes a range style oven, dishwasher, washing machine and coffee maker. The entrance hallway provides useful storage space and has a rack for muddy wellies.
Longlands Cottage has an exclusive setting on a small country estate in South Somerset, close to the border with Dorset and just over half an hour from the coast. The village of East Coker, and the nearest pub, is a very walkable half a mile down a country lane and the market town of Yeovil is only 5 minutes drive (2 miles). Yeovil has a choice of supermarkets, a full range of shops, pubs, restaurants and takeaways as well as indoor play centres, a theatre and 10-screen Cineworld.
Driving south from Longlands Cottage takes families through Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the sweeping bays and dramatic cliffs of the World Heritage Coastline. Sandy beaches at Lyme Regis and Weymouth (40 mins) are perfect for playing and paddling while the rocky Jurassic Coastline in between will keep kids amused, hunting for fossils and peeping into rockpools. Weymouth Sea Life Adventure Park makes a fun family day out, from seeing penguins, sharks, seals and all the other marine life to the thrills of theme park rides and panoramic views of the coast from Weymouth Tower.
When it comes to eating out, the owner recommends the classical fine dining at Little Barwick House (5 mins), afternoon tea at Summer Lodge (15 mins), top notch pub food at The Lord Poullet Arms (20 mins) and The Hive Beach Cafe at Burton Bradstock (35 mins). When in Somerset, sampling some cider is a must for parents and Perrys Cider Farm is just the place, only 15 minutes away.
