BFB's Overview

The architect and owners of Les Pierres Blanches have done such a great job of this newly built villa, that few would guess it was anything but an authentic Provencal ‘Mas’. From the sun bleached walls to charming beamed ceilings, Les Pierres Blanches really looks the part but also has all the mod cons, comforts and space needed for a relaxing holiday with extended family or friends.

To begin with, Les Pierres Blanches has a fantastic location, just outside the ancient hill top village of Les Baux de Provence and set amongst 750 acres of vineyards. Grownups will happily gaze on the fabulous views morning, noon and night while children have acres of space to play in the lawned, landscaped gardens and cool off in a 12x5.5m saltwater pool. A large pergola-shaded patio is bliss for lingering over long lazy meal times and BBQs. Parents can afford to relax and allow little ones to play in the spacious grounds since the pool is both alarmed and set a reasonable distance from the house. Evenings can be spent enjoying good food, local wines and company, under Van Gogh-style starry nights, whilst keeping an ear out for babes in bed.

Once inside, Les Pierres Blanches is a clever combination of big airy rooms and cosy corners, period furnishings and fresh modern decor. A grand living room is the impressive heart of the house with a huge stone real fireplace, timber-beamed-ceiling and French doors to the garden. There’s also a separate TV/DVD room and a comfy study, so all ages can find a place to do their own thing. Everyone will also naturally gravitate to the French farmhouse kitchen, complete with polished wood dining table, cream fitted units, range cooker and cheery tiled worktops. The villa’s large master double bedroom suite and three twin bedrooms are on the split level ground floor, which is handy for parents to listen out for sleeping babies and all of these also have lockable doors to the garden. The second double bedroom is on the upper floor along with a fourth twin bedroom with balcony window and doors to a roof terrace. Finally, with a choice of seven bath or shower rooms and four WCs, there should be no queuing or arguing even when the villa has a full house of 12 tots, teenagers, parents and pals. See Fast facts for details of baby equipment and services provided.

Accommodation Overview

Les Pierres Blanches has 6 bedrooms and sleeps up to 12 family and friends. The master double bedroom is on the split level ground floor and comprises double arched doors into the garden, views of Les Baux, an ensuite bathroom and WC. Three twin bedrooms are also on the ground floor one with an ensuite bathroom, two with ensuite shower rooms and all three with doors onto the garden. On the first floor, a double bedroom has an ensuite shower room and a twin bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, balcony window and doors to a roof terrace.

Location Information

One of the pleasures of Provence is exploring the ancient unspoilt ‘villages perché’ which grace the rugged hilltops and Les Baux de Provence (1.25 miles) is one of the most famously gorgeous of all. Carved into limestone outcrops above stunning Provencal scenery, Les Baux is a higgledy piggledy delight of cutesy cobbled streets, artisan shops, bistros and brasseries like Les Quentades which has a fabulous terrace for eating al fresco. Gourmets will also be keen to book a table at the Michelin star La Cabre d’Or just outside the village or the equally acclaimed I’Oustce de Beaumaniere. The village has medieval castle ruins to explore and is also renowned for its olives and fine wines which can be sampled and bought direct from several local vineyards.

Although the modern world seems a world away from Les Baux, there are more amenities at Mausanne les Alpilles (2 miles) and St-Remy-de-Provence (4 miles). Art and architecture buffs can’t miss a pilgrimage to Arles (11 miles) to see the World Heritage listed Roman monuments and retrace Van Gogh’s footsteps through the Vielle Ville which inspired him to paint his iconic Sunflowers and Cafe on a Starry Night. Another World Heritage highlight to tick off the list while in Provence is the Roman Pont du Gard Aqueduct, within an hour’s drive from the villa.

The historic city of Avignon (19 miles), boasts the world’s biggest gothic palace where successive medieval Popes made their official residence, instead of Rome. The region is also the gateway to the birdlife, flora and fauna of the Camargue, where horseback tours and jeep safaris are an exciting way to go in search of the famous pink flamingos, wild black bulls and white horses.

Getting there: At the heart of Provence, Les Pierres Blanches is well served by airlines from the UK, with flights to Avignon (25 minutes drive), Nimes (40 mins) and Marseille (50 mins). Families can also travel by train from London to Avignon in as little as 6 hours, by taking the Eurostar and TGV.
