Cosseted in the peace and quiet of the rolling Brittany countryside, La Maison Blanche and Hirondelle are a lovely pair of gites where extended families and friends can have a really relaxing holiday together. Both have also earned themselves the 5-star accolade with Tripadvisor which just goes to show how much guests love them.
Hirondelle is a single storey, 2-bedroom cottage next door, renovated to the same high standards, which is ideal as a spacious bolthole for parents with a baby, or for grandparents to have their own escape from a big family group in the farmhouse. La Maison Blanche is a traditional Breton farmhouse for up to 8 people (6 adults plus 2 children plus 2 cots), which has been given a luxurious, modern makeover that lets the original character shine through, from wood floors and exposed timbers to antique Breton furnishings.
Both gites share an acre of lawned garden, overlooking fields beyond, which provides plenty of space for children to play and discover the playhouse, swing and slide. Although the garden is not entirely enclosed, a fenced area is due to be built for the 2015 season. The garden also has a vegetable patch, families will be offered whatever seasonal home grown goodies are available each day. Besides sharing the garden, both gites have their own patio area with a stone BBQ and hardwood furniture for eating outdoors and soaking up some sunshine. The big bonus for La Maison Blanche is a private, heated swimming pool, which has Roman steps at one end and is surrounded by a wide terrace of smooth flagstones. If both gites are booked together, all the guests can obviously enjoy the pool; otherwise it’s just for those at La Maison Blanche.
Hirondelle is a single storey cottage, next door to La Maison Blanche, with two ensuite bedrooms for up to 4 people plus a baby in a cot. The living/dining area and kitchen is open plan, which makes it easy for parents to keep an eye on little ones, and underfloor heating keeps it nice and cosy for little feet. The living room has 2 comfy sofas, a flat screen TV with English Freeview Channels and a DVD player, plus a stereo with iPod docking station. The dining area has a table for up to 6 people, whilst the modern fitted kitchen is well equipped, including electric oven and gas hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washer/drier and all the usual kitchen appliances. The main bedroom has a double bed and space for the cot and the second bedroom has two single beds. Both bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms, with a walk-in hydro massage shower, WC and vanity unit. The gite has a patio area with a stone BBQ at the front of the house which leads straight out to the shared, south facing lawn garden but guests at Hirondelle only have access to the swimming pool at La Maison Blanche if the two gites are booked together.
La Maison Blanche and Hirondelle are located in the peaceful countryside of Southern Brittany and only half an hour from the white sand beaches that have made the region such a firm favourite with families. The local villages and towns feature thatched farmhouses and cottages that typify the timelessness of rural Brittany and there is a good selection of local shops, bars and supermarkets within just a few miles from the gites. The local markets are great for picking up home grown and homemade Brittany produce, whilst family friendly restaurants serve Breton crepes and galettes with all kinds of sweet and savoury fillings to satisfy the fussiest little eaters. Mobile takeaway vans selling pizzas, spit roast chicken and ‘frites’ also visit the villages on different days so that takes care of tea for at least one or two nights.
The ‘commune’ of Quistinic is between the historic towns of Pontivy and Carnac in the wooded valley of the River Blavet, which meanders through the picturesque countryside and has miles of family friendly walks and cycling along well maintained towpaths. The river beach at Minezan (5-10 mins) makes the perfect spot for a picnic and has a rustic bar for ice creams and drinks. The river is also popular for canoeing and kayaking and there’s a canoe centre within a 5 minute drive at Pont Augan and also a watersports and kayaking centre at Lochrist which has mini rapids and obstacles for older children and adults to tackle.
Port Louis, just across the Blavet estuary from Lorient (30 mins) has a large white sandy beach where families can play the days away, have a swim and try some watersports. Further down the coast, Carnac has a string of 5 beaches linked by a pretty coastal path and, just inland from here, the countryside is strewn with hundreds of mysterious standing stones. The historic walled town of Vannes is also well worth a visit, with cobbled streets filled with timber framed buildings, interesting little shops and cosy Breton bistros.
